So I brought my girl to the vet. She needed her heart-worm test and annual check up.  She gets on the the scale and is an astonishing 100lbs!!!!  :o This time I can't say it all muscle.  Seems like she put on some winter weight...  ::) No good! She did seem bigger but not that much bigger.  The problem is its winter and getting her to go outside and burn off some calories is workout in itself... my baby of a dog would rather be snuggled up under a blanket all winter long then go outside.  Any suggestions on how to get her back into shape inside? Thanks a bunch! ( i really need to post a picture of my chubby girl. She really doesn't look too fat and then all of a sudden I noticed)

wow that is HUGE for a girl, you will have to post a pic of her. I promise I wont judge lol. My oldest dog Elly is one hefty girl also, she is 11.75 and her favorite thing to do in life is eat. Of course the whole family gives into her sweet dark eyes as she begs for food, even though I'm always on their case about it.

Sofia checked in at 91 pounds. I heard through this forum that it was too heavy for a girl.. Had her thyroid checked and voila! It was off.
She's eating better, running faster and feels so good.. but.. it IS cold outside and she hates it..wants to do her business and hop back onto her bed in the sunshine
Haven't had her weighed yet. ( vet check in three weeks) but I can tell she's thinner. ( I can see her elegant cheek bones)
I read alot about treadmills for dogs.. anyone here use them?

Maybe I should get her thyroid checked... are there any other symptoms of thyroid problems?  She was weighed in this summer at 85lbs and was considered a healthy weight by the vet.  She is a big girl anyway.  Her Dad was around 115lbs and none of that was fat.

I will post a pic of my chunky girl (if I can remember how) when I get home.

Re: Thyroid problems:
Lethargic, not interested in food, dry coat, scaly elbows, and an odd smell.. Not a dirty dog smell.. just a .... smell and of course a little overweight especially considering lack of appetite..

Oh yes.. I remember another clue.. low tolerance for the cold.. will find a warm sunny spot and lay in it..Sofie had all the symptoms that I mentioned in my first post. The fact that dobermans are susceptible to thyroid problems made it even more likely that she was low.

Here are some pictures of my big girl.  They are not great but should give you an idea on her size.  She is still my baby though.  My big baby.

I am interested in this thyroid testing.  Is it a blood test?

She is GORGEOUS!!!
She doesn't look fat to me, I can see her ribs..What a love!!
Yes, the thyroid test is a blood sample that is sent to the lab ( just like humans)takes a couple of days for the results. If she tests low, you will have to give her pills twice daily for the rest of her life..
I don't know how to use Photo Bucket. have tried a bazillion times, but if you send me your email I can send some pics of Sofia over..

Soleil - she is a little heavy, but not too bad though. Loss of appetite is not always present, as Red has always maintained a Seafood diet - he sees food and inhales it. When he is turned loose after his meals he always goes and checks for any dropped kibbles by the others.

He peaked at 147 pounds! He was weighed last weekend at 95. He started his thyroid treatments in October, 2008 after a blood test revealed low thyroid activity. He will have blood drawn while he is boarded next week and be re-tested. He is a totally different dog now, he runs, bounds through the house and chases Princess and plays actively with her. He will be 7 in March and acts like a big puppy. Last year he just laid around, would walk but would not run and never ever bounded.

Lethargic and overweight are two big clues. That plus either continued weight gain or no weight loss even though you cut back the food portions are another clue. Animals will eat more and put on more weight in the winter, the indoor dogs not as much as the outdoor. They will burn more calories in the cold keeping warm.

She has always been a picky eater about her kibble... although she will pretty much stand on head trying to get a treat! We have just cut back her food a little to see if it helps at all and are trying to bump up her exercise.  Frozen, icy ground is not helping though.  I will keep an eye on her and see if I notice her being lethargic at all.  I will also be monitoring her weight closely.

Wish I did not have to use the flash for those pictures last night.  No one can see her pretty eyes.

UPDATE: Took Soleil to a new vet and now and discovered although her thyroid testing came back within the normal range it it was barely there... something to monitor in the future but the good news is she has lost weight... YIPPEE! She is still big but she is under 90lbs now and still loosing weight.  She has more energy and no more dandruff! I need new pictures of her now! so in short... bye bye winter weight! :D

What a beautiful red girl! How do you pronounce Soleil?

Soleil is French for sun.  That pronunciation is Solay, so that's my guess but I'm sure that owner will chime in.

You know you must post her "skinny" pics since you posted her "fat" pics. Soliel will never forgive you if you don't  8)

I think all dobies hate the cold, I know Freyja does. In the winter she quickly paws the window to get me to let her back in, she's not nearly as fast come spring.

The only time in winter Freyja is ok outside is if I'm out working.  This winter I had to spend a lot of time shoveling snow and she stayed out there with me the entire time, running and bouncing around in the white stuff. It worked out great for me because I couldn't see the path I had dug to the woodpile in order to follow it back. I'd call Freyja and she'd come to me, then I'd follow my black dobie down the path through the white snow. She got plenty of exercise and I was able to use her to help me.

Yep Glengate is correct on how to pronounce her name.  She is my sunshine!

I do need new pictures of her now.  I can't let her "fat pics" stay posted... I think she would prefer to call them the before and after pics.  She is loving her diet!  She is still a bit large but all that neck fat is slowly disappearing... or more like turning into muscle.  She is loving the warmer weather!

I see everyone's dogs and I just drool - they are all so beautiful!  I have my beautiful little girl mix and whisper to her all the time, "Ginger's a Doberman Pinscher."  She does the Doberman head tuck on my chest or the head lift when I'm kissing her.

Then she is. I never seen another breed do that or flip the hand to tell you it's dog petting time. When I'm sitting at the keyboard suddenly I feel the presence of a head between my arm and chest. I look down to see two amber eyes looking at me. Princess wants something and it's up to me to decipher what. (Usually outside or to tell me the water bowl is empty).

Just came from Vet for Buddys yearly shots and check up....and proud to say he is 95.4 pounds, last year when he went he was 93.6. So I can live with a 2 pound gain in a year.....Now the owner needs to be weighed..lol
