Hi all, our 8 week old Blue has been in his new home for 5 days now and was wondering if anyone had experienced their pup chewing their hind legs and skin?? Nothing excess to the point of bleeding but worried if this is abnormal and if he has dry/itchy skin or allergy?

Thanks!

Bane chews on his hind legs sometimes. Same thing, not bad...just does.  We try to redirect with a toy.  Maybe just on the safe side give a flea bath.  I've heard thou (never experienced) that they are very prone to skin allergys so maybe go with the most hypoallergenic kind:). Welcome to the forum!!! Can't wait to see pics :)

Is he a blue and rust ? They from what I hear have some skin or hair issues. Does he have dandruff ? Have you ever tried a little bit of fish oil in his food once a day ? Maybe give him a good bath with puppy shampoo that has oatmeal and aloe in it. He might have fleas :/ we get the single doses of vectra for flea and tick prevention. We also put a teaspoon of fish oil in his food once a day. If I were you I'd give him a nice bath and see if that helps. He also might be bored and do that to occupy himself.

Welcome to the Forum and yeah.. sad to say you might expect a bit of skin issues with your guy.

Good suggestion with the fish oil... but please check with your vet before trying anything new..and always start out slow. Sofia could not tolerate fish oil or salmon flavored kibble and we home cook now with a low ( NONE) sodium diet.

A good grain free kibble helps. and yep an oatmeal based shampoo is good for sensitive skin.. ( but please don't over bathe.)

I use coconut oil in Sofia's food and rub it on her coat, massaging into her skin.. she doesn't get greasy and I've seen an improvement.. but once again, check with your vet about the quantity.. we are up to a tablespoon a day.. but took several weeks to increase from just a bit..

Good luck.. glad you're here and keep asking questions.. we're not vets.. but a lot of experience in this great Forum..

Thanks, again loving the support!

He is a blue and rust so we expected some extra work! I remember reading about fish oil but as you say I'll wait to the vet for their recommendations. He's on Ziwipeak at the moment (which he devours) and we'll go raw soonish which will help I'm sure.

I think the oil is definetly the next thing to do. We gave him a bath a few days ago with not so great shampoo (fail on our side) so I think we'll wait for a couple of weeks before the next one, unless you would recommend otherwise?

Thanks guys

Omg he is soooooooooooo cute :) you might need to get him on a flea medication if you do get the single doses cuz his weight is going to change constantly ! Are you getting his ears done ? take lots and lots of pics cuz they grow up fast!!!! we feed taste of the wild bison puppy formula and his coat looks better his teeth are better his eyes are nice and clear I'm really loving the results I have with this food. At this stage they will devour anything !!! If you switch foods do it very gradually.. Learned the hard way the have sensitive tummies lol. For instance my boy can't do pig ears. Ahhh you're going to have so much fun with him :) if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask :) back to my statement of they grow fast here's what I mean lol !!!!

8 weeks old then 4 months to now almost 6 months old.

He's precious!  I am a sucker for the little white spot on his chest ... our boy has one too.

He's also got a little white paw which is another reason why we picked him ;-)

Ares: Your's has grown! Be a sad day when he's too big to pick up! We're in the UK so it's illegal to get his tail docked or ears cropped (legally can only get tail docked if he's a working dog, but never ears). We're taking him to the vet for his second round of vaccinations so will ask about flea stuff!

Thanks all.

Oh my, isn't little Blue a precious boy! Does it just look like he is bored? I know that sometimes Juneau will roll around and bite his leg to try to get me to play with him. Never causes any damage and no dandruff/bald spots/etc..., and he stops as soon as we do something fun. I have heard from a friend at training that she feeds coconut oil and sprays apple cider vinegar on her dog's coat. She swears by it, although I have never heard of other people spraying it (I feed ACV).

Good luck! He's a cutie.

All of your dobies are gorgeous!!

I'm at home pretty much 24/7 at the moment so I have a lot of time to play games that challenge him. I've been playing hide and seek which he absolutely loves...though sometimes he will walk straight passed me lol. He plays and naps all day plus training...but if you have any suggestions to keep him even more busy then I'd be really greatful for some tips :)

Last night was a rough night though. He woke up whinning (which i know his normal while he's still young and learning) so I took him out to go toilet but after he didnt settle for ages and kept crying(he usually walks around the kitchen a bit and then gets back in his crate with not much fuss)...eventually he got tired and fell asleep but when he woke in the morning he was restless, biting and whining and then threw up the tiniest bit of flem...This worried me massivily! He's seemed quite happy after and for the rest of the day. although sometimes he has a weird little cough and swollows quite loudly so im watching his every move! We have an appointment for his vaccination on saturday and will bring it up then unless anyone things i should get him to the vet sooner?? I get anxious as soon as the slightest thing abnormal happens with him haha!

dobermans are prone to bloat so don't let him have crazy activity after he eats and don't let him eat really fast if he's a fast eater you can put a tennis ball in his bowl and he will have to slow down and push the tennis ball out of the way. Also make sure he's eating with the bowl on the ground so he is less likely to bloat :) lol I think we all can understand your anxiety I was a complete worry wart with our boy but now we have our routines and it's much less stressful :) if he keep actin abnormal through out the day I would get him to the vet and really watch what he's putting in that mouth because like children they put everything and anything in there !

Have them check for worms. It can make their dear tummys pretty yuck.
