Hi all, I have another question. Sophie is six weeks, and will have had her first 5 in 1 shot. We want to do everything right, and are firm about socializing, but what age? Does she need to have all her shots first? That would really be loosing some time, her last shot will be 15 weeks, Parvo booster and rabies. Please advise Angie

If you're CERTAIN that any dogs she's around have already had their vaccinations, I think it's ok to socialize a young pup that has only had the first round of shots.  I'd never take a young pup to a dog park or even petsmart until all the shots are final, though....you just never know what lurks out there.  But if you have friends or family with dogs that are up on their vaccinations, that would be a perfect setting for socialization.

My opinion wait til after her next round and worm check etc from vet... My vets opinion of situation is they can be socialized after 2nd round of shots but have to make sure no worms and that they are ina clean environment (not outside where other dogs who could have worms etc have been)

I took Cisco to puppy class at 10 weeks and because all the other dogs were older and had all shots it was ok... Some vets will tell you wait til 15 weeks...

My trainer and his wife (k9 offiicer and vet tech) always say as long as they are current on shots or UTD meaning they don't have to have them all just what they should have by their age... many different opinions on this though

So like I said talk to your vet and see what she has to say- if it is people socialization wouldn't worry about age obviously and she will be around your pups... so thats a start...

Thank you Paul? I'm trying to remember names. Yes, it would only be friends dogs. We don't even have a dog park here, but I wouldn't consider one until Sophie was much older. There is a headstart class she'll be going to, but it'll be when she's 3 months.

You know what, Angie?  I think I might be ALMOST as excited about Sophie coming home with you tomorrow as you are!  Expecting lots of new photos and LOTS of stories.

We started socializing as soon as she got her first shots, but only with dogs that we knew were "clean".

Vaccinated and worm-free dogs in your backyard or those dogs is fine. I'd settle for playing with your babies until Sophie is bigger. You want to match energie and a big loud pushy dog can over power her when she's so young.

Parvo is VERY serious. Do not bring her out of clean and protected yards until she's had all her shots. Parvo is transmitted in stool (and dirt).

Your vet will fill you in on all this I'm sure :)
