Hello everyone! I am a new dobie owner, one week today! My puppy's name is Marvin and he will be 8 weeks old Friday. This week has been fantastic except for two issues that I would appreciate any advice on.

1 - I have two cats that have been completely fine with dogs in the past but Marvin seems to think they are a toy/litter mate. I know this is completely logical for him to think but how do get him to stop? I have tried slowly introducing them and for the first few days he seemed to not even notice them in the beginning. Now that he is feeling more at home he barks and nips at them in an effort to get them to play with him. I have a Berman and Siamese cats, the Berman (Atticus) is super laid back, doesn’t care about anything, my Siamese (Clio) is also very laid back but she is very talkative and lets you know when she has had enough. She never bites or scratches but she will hiss and slap without her claws out. They both are very patient with Marvin but he is relentless. I have gotten to the point where I have to lock my cats in their room (yes they have a cat room, they are a bit spoiled as is Marv) when Marvin is out of his kennel because I cannot stop him from harassing them. I have never had a puppy that is so relentless when it comes to cats!

2 – I live in Portland which rains all winter long but isn’t very cold in the winter and Marvin REFUSES to walk outside on his own. I take him out on a leash and I have to pick him up and place him outside otherwise I would literally have to drag him while he tries to claw his way back inside. I tried coaxing him out with treats and he made it to the door way but no further. I am sure the back yard isn't such an awesome place in his eyes as it is pretty swampy at this time of year because of all the rain so the only time he is ever back there is to eliminate and then come back inside but I have never had a dog refuse to go outside like him. Has anyone else run into this issue?

Hi BMF, congrats on your new puppy! For question 1, I have no advise although I have two kitties myself, I have the opposite problem, they want to kill my puppy. I have one kitty that actually stalks him.

Question two, I had this problem with Loki, I had to continue to drag, shove him out until he has become accustomed to the wet weather, I'm in Chicago, so not sure how the snow will go over with him since he really disliked his paws getting wet. Don't get me started on the rain dropping on him, he would stop scratch or bite himself etc, this all stopped pretty quickly because he does enjoy being outside.

No advice.. no little kitties here.

Sofia has a cougar, a bob cat and two wild cats who stalk the golf course out back keeping the rabbit population down.. they have a healthy respect for one another and steer clear.

Welcome to the forum.. Marvin is adorable and I hope you get some sound advise re: your kitties.

I would say correct him before he even tries to nip at his housemates. Don't scare him though, that would be bad. Praise him for good behavior, try not to scold him too much. Just correct him as gently as you can. :)

Thanks for your input! I'll keep correcting him and hopefully he will get past the idea that the cats are his play mates soon! As for as him going outside on his own, I spoke too soon. This morning he walked himself outside with me twice!

Lol cynfully Marvin freaks out when he gets rained on too! He only will eliminate right up against the house so he's under the eve.

Welcome to the group.  My two are 7 yrs. old.  We have 3 cats. On accasion Tony still chases one of the cats, his name is Earl.  If Earl doesn't run Tony will nudge him with his nose.  The other two are siamese, one Blue point, Spike, and the other is Mocha a seal point.  I don't know what happened, but the dogs never bothered the Siamese, just Earl.  When we first brought the puppies home, there was alot of cat chasing, and alot of NOs. I put a baby gate up in the hallway so the cats could get over it and away from the dogs.  That worked well for us.

On the going outside in the rain, Tony did his business under the carport any time it rained until he was about one.  He still hates to get his feet wet, but now he goes out, then right back in, but only if he really has to go.

Now, Tory never chased a cat, and loves the water, she is like a little kid, splashing in the puddles.

Good luck with your new addition, I'm sure the cats and the puppy will work it out, Laid back or not, the Siamese will take so much before she puts the pup in his place.

Rocky was scared of the cat for about the first 2 months, then he realized after accidently stepping on her that she would run if he chased her.   He is not allowed to play with her, he will try and he will paw at her but you just have to put an end to it now.  Since he's only 8 weeks I'd suggest just seperating them for a bit until he's old enough to understand what No Cat or Leave it means.  Rocky wouldn't hurt our cat on purpose but he's way to rough to play with her.
