Hey everyone,

Just got a new doberman pinscher, his name is Odin and he's 4 n a half months old. I came across this site and thought it would be the perfect place to seek specific help

1- he NEVER barks, if he does its at other dogs when he's right beside them, something wrong?

2-he loves all people, and is amazingly affectionate yet around dogs he starts to yelp and go crazy on leash, pulling whining, whimpering and when i allow him to he jumps and barks at them while yelping and i don't know if he's being aggressive or if all Doberman pups need to learn how to interact with other dogs, whichever it is its what CONCERNS ME THE MOST. i want him to play well with other dogs.

3- potty training, he has been peeing outside whenever i take him, yet its like i take him out every hour, is this normal? and when can i start extending the period in which i take him outside. he's poo'd in his crate once and never again, once inside and then never again for every time he's peed inside he's peed outside 5 times so a good ratio id say.

4- crate training, he hates the grills on his crate and scratches and paws at them. The first night i left him alone in t \he basement ad he yelped and whined all night and poo'd in his crate, i found myself to be completely un-knowledgable and cruel so i did a lot of research and decided to sleep beside his crate at night. the only problem is he couldn't deal with the grill in the way so i tied him to the inside of the crate so only his head could come out while i lay on a bed beside him. i wanted to know if this is spoiling him or when should i try putting the grill back on instead of the leesh on the inside. it would be nice to get some input on crate training in general an d what should i be doing next or when can i leave him alone and he wont yelp or bark or whine.

Welcome!  they usually won't bark much until they are older.  At least Rocky didn't....but one day that big deep sound will come out.   Rocky sounds like a monster from the other side of the door :)

As for socializing and your concerns with other dogs.  I'd suggest classes and lots of socialization.  However, if you were never told or are not aware please google and read up on the subject of same sex agression in this breed.  It is very common and as he gets older you may find he unable to be at places like dog parks, etc.

Rocky gets very excited also with other dogs and will often whine or yelp a bit out of excitement and even bark a bit when he can't get over to another dog but sees them close.  Usually after a moment or two he will stop.  If it's a female and he can get to them, usually just a few sniffs solves the whole thing but often with males the sniff turns it into a growl and that ends the 'get-to-know-you' phase.

Same with Gideon. He didn't bark for quite a while, except when he saw other dogs. He would bark/yelp because he wanted to play. It wasn't until he got about six months that he started barking as a watchdog.
