Getting a new Dobie pup (first time dog owner) from a local breeder in about a week and a half! Been reading the puppy forums up and down now for about 2 weeks, lol. I also have done a lot research on Dobies in general, a very interesting breed for sure! I got the Top Paw kennel, Kong leash, stainless steel water and food bowls (I think am ready? ). I even have a vet lined up for Diesel's first home visit, as well as a puppy training class at the local PetSmart. My sister stayed with me for awhile and had a Lab which I came to really love and got along great with (I took care of "Lily" the whole time my sis stayed with me studing for the MCAT and medprep classes), but alas she and the Lab left to start Med school and my big house has been empty. But all that will change now, haha. Anyways, keep up the great information guys and gals! And if I forgot anything please let me know.

P.S. I will have pics as soon as Diesel makes it home, so stay tuned!

Congrats on your new puppy can't wait to see the pics and hear all about him!!! Ben loves puppies and says hi with a big old rottie whooooooooffff

Do you have dobie chew toys?? I read here that dobes run through toys like crazy; have have lots of time for play and exercise.....you'll be wore out before your dog, hahahaha

And find the most recent thread here in the forum on first aid kits to have at the ready I think it might be under the heading of "belly trouble" in the health section check it out for a list of things to have ready for ingestion of things not necessary :))

Thank you Talisin! Yes, I do (a KONG extreme and a Nylabone) as a matter fact but I think I will follow your advice and get some more.

Am actually looking foward to the exercise, trying to get back in shape and needed someone who can keep up or this case beat me!!!

Thanks for the heads up on the "ingestion" subject I think I will look that up now!

BIG Welcome to the group, to you and Diesel, from me (Paul) and my doberman DJ.

Chew toys are definitely a MUST...we actually have a big plastic storage-type box in a corner that is full of all sorts of toys...tennis balls, rubber chews, things that make noise, nylabones, even a few stuffed things, but they never live long with DJ. She likes to pick and choose what she plays with, and sometimes will actually put her toys BACK in the toybox.   Sometimes.  LOL

Petsmart puppy classes are a good way to start.  It's basically 'social hour' for your pup and other puppies, but that's one of the most important things, in my opinion, to have your doberman properly socialized around other dogs and people. Later on, you might decide to go to a different type of training for obedience or something else.  Be sure you have all his vaccinations up to date before taking him around other dogs, though---parvo is not something you want to take the risk with.

Thanks Paul and Lady Kate! I fill at home already and thanks for all the advice, I will get more toys and make sure Diesel is caught up on vaccinations to prevent parvo and other illnesses before we go out.

And don't worry I promise I will have photos keeping up with his growth and progress.

So happy for you, my first dober puppy was such an amazing experience, I had other dogs before and I loved them all. They were happy, playful and loving but the doberman was the first that could actually read my mind, and conveyed quite clearly that nothing would ever hurt me as long as he was there. I always say he was only a whisper away from being human. You have so much to look forward to, congratulations, can't wait for pictures.

Welcome to you and the pup! Can't wait to see the pics of him!!!!

Apollo is almost one and he has gone thru so many toys it is crazy. His favorite by far is the Kong wobbler (get the black one, he ripped the red one to shreds). Apollo loves to run in open parks and this will sometime wear him out, but nothing gets him more tired than playing in the backyard with his best bud Peanut, our mini schnauzer. Be ready to be super patient, I am sure many of these other dobie owners will agree that patience will get you far with this incredibly intelligent breed of dog. I sometimes thin Apollo thinks he is human haha. Good luck and keep us posted!!!

Thanks EPApollo! I have the black KONG so I think am on the right track, . By nature I have a patient personality so am looking forward to learning everything about him. But I cant lie, I am excited. I get Diesel this Saturday! But its straight to the vet, and then to PetSmart to pick up some more toys and food. I have a big backyard but no doggie playmates other than myself, so I hope I can keep up! I am still looking for a dog park tho, am sure I can find one nearby. And I promise pics coming soon, lol!

Just added Diesel's first pic to the gallery, (man that stuff is kinda tricky). Caught him staring at me after his romping in the backyard for the first time (doesn't he look at peace? ). Working on some more soon, after I figure out this site's pic posting process better.

Hi Buddys_mama! And thank you, Diesel is about 8 weeks now and a blur of energy. Bouncing around and curious about everything! But in the end, extremely fun to be around. Welcome to Gentledoberman, I hope you are enjoying the forum as much as I.

P.S Buddy is a looker too, I would like to see more pics!

Diesel is a doll and of coarse Im partial to the breed and especially the name.  Diesel was my first Dobe.  He was a character and I miss him everyday.  I hope, know I know that your Diesel will give you as much joy as my Diesel gave me. My new puppy, Axel says hi and welcome to the forum.
