Thanks for the excerpt Kate. I very much enjoyed that piece. I had a premonition that it would turn out the same way for Storm and I. We regulary arm wrestle during tug. We grab the toy together, then Storm puts whichever is the most advantageous paw over my arm and we wrestle to a stand still. I'm sure we would wind up the same way with a dremel.

Its kinda funny because I'm reading a really good book on dog behavior/training called Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson, in which she says that tug is actually mimicing the shared equivalent of ripping up the kill. Instead of me vs the dog its actually Storm and me vs the tug toy. If that were for real we'd starve to death :) either that or we'd have to start at the ends and work our way to the middle lol.

I think I'll stick with the nail clippers. I'm a highly experienced guinea pig nail trimmer (no one else in the house has the guts to do it). What could go wrong?

Cher, glad you enjoyed my 'strine' accent, cobber. If you want a lark, have a squiz at a classic Ozzie poem full of our unique vernacular, C.J.Denis's The Sentimental Bloke. A poets attempt at putting our accent down on paper.

Hi again Cher,

Sorry if I'm repeating what everyone else has advised you, but just in case I might hit upon something different, I'll give you my version of instructions for uploading here. Sorry in advance if its stuff you've already tried.

Here goes:

If you already have pictures uploaded but they are  too big to display, you can enter your account, and click on the 'File browser' tab.

Just below the 'file browser' tab, is another set of buttons. Select the 'resize' button, and a width x height box appears. The max size allowed by the site appears to be 550 wide x 700 high.

Hit resize, and I'm guessing you should be good to go. I havent used this method myself, but that appears to be the go if you have already uploaded a pic but its too big to display.

If you cant upload to your pc first to resize, I have an app for android called 'Resize Me', with which you can resize the pic on your phone. I'm assuming Apple has something similar. And people seem to upload straight from their phone.

Another option is to connect your phone via USB and browse your phone from the pc (which should see the phone as external storage).

If you can upload to the site from your pc (this is the way I do it), using windows 7, install Paint.net. Its a really basic 'art program' free of charge available for windows.

Once you've installed Paint, browse to the file your pics are in in windows explorer. Double clicking on them will open the pic in windows pic gallery. In the tool bar in the preview pane you will see a button called 'open'. When you select 'open', you will have the option to open your pic in Paint.net. From here you can resize and save. I have a folder I use for site uploads. When you browse from the web site, it will remember the folder you used last and you can keep working from there.

It looks like you have instructions for uploading via the comment box from a post, but if you need more info let me know. I've been a member of our local PC club (I was the Prez for a while) for years, so I'm used to jumping in and helping out with tech stuff. I cant help myself - its a curse, believe me.

Maybe if you can tell us where your getting stuck, we can figure out a fix.

I hope some of this helps and isn't just more frustration for you.

Cheers.

Oh OK, I see the issue. Its easier to put it on a pc but I havent tried going straight from an Android device. Is your phone Android as well?

Can you get your pics to your tablet? It might be easier to access the web site using a larger screen. I know my S4 can display ok for reading but it has a hard time if I want to post a comment.

I've installed an app called 'Resize Me' from Google Play. You can resize your pic after you take it, by selecting it from your gallery, and when it saves, the finished resize will be saved in your gallery again.

Ok trying this on a trial run from my phone. I'm typing from my pc because the 'post a comment' box is hopeless when displaying type. But I've meanwhile uploaded a pic straight from my phone.

So on my phone I ran the 'Resize Me' app, which allowed me to pick my photo from the gallery. I cropped the pic and resized it to 480x480 (its a preselected size) and saved it. You can probably customize the size, but I havent bothered going into the settings yet.

I then accessed the web site (through my phone) and logged into my account. I selected the 'file browser' button and selected 'upload'. The upload button set up a screen asking how I wanted to access through my phone, I selected gallery. I picked the photo I wanted and the site started uploading the pic. The upload was successful. Now lets try adding the pic through the comment box here...

Select the 'Image' button in the top tool bar, 'browse the server', find the pic I want from the file server and click on it.

Bingo...not the greatest pic but ok for a test run.

Hoped this helped. But theres alot going on at home at present, so I may not have been very clear. Just give us a buzz if you need more info.

Storms favoritist of all toys btw. If you havent tried one out, I highly recomend it. Its a Kong Jumping Jack (If I remember the packaging correctly) and they bounce all over the place. One of the few toys she hasnt destroyed.

Kato I think you just missed the bracket closure in the first attempt, you should be able to do [ img]whateveryoururlis.jpg[ /img] (without the spaces) but also the url says the pic has been removed :)

Thanks, I will try adding that app to my tablet and try that out.

I do see the site finally upgraded the new profile pic, I'm guessing that takes a couple days sometimes lol.

I've seen those shaped kongs, I didn't know they bounced around, I am definitely getting one Kato would love it.

My husband is planning to make a flirt pole here on his days off, we're just goung to use it for now for him to chase though not to jump until he's grown more.

As for new news, Kato has found his voice now outside wanting to bark more and more ):, I'm recalling him and of course going out to him if he doesn't come to calm him which usually works, but last night everytime the neighbours dog was out it was a bark fest but just from Kato.

I even brought him up to the fence to make friends which he did finally stop for a bit, then engaged him in playing with me, once he showed no more interest in playing he resumed barking, I had to bring him in.

The rest of the evening we had to play inside and only went out to take him pee because he would start barking at nothing everytime, the neighbour dog wasn't even outside anymore.

I know this is him becoming more settled in with us and now feeling confident to speak, and we don't mind a few barks as an alert to us but how on earth do you get them to settle it down lol.

I know you all have more experience with this so any words of wisdom to share please lol.

Yay oh yay!! I am sure it sounds like 'baby steps' to you.,. but they usually get you where you want to go eventually... I think he's coming along very well.

The flirt pole is wonderful ... SOfia has always loved it.. and Bella cannot get enough.. it's her favorite.. here's a photo of S.. love the focus she's showing...

thanks for the update..

Yes I think I just need to settle myself with the barking and keep at him.

I guess I worry too much about annoying others in the neighbourhood, even though I don't leave him out there to carry on and I'm sure they hear me trying to redirect and distract him.

It's just my one next door neighbour yelled at his neighbour a few days ago for making too much noise playing horse shoes and having his music too loud and it was only 8pm and really wasn't that bad for the time.

He told his neighbour to have some respect for the neighbourhood that some people enjoy relaxing.

We thought his yelling at his neighbour was more disturbing than the neighbour having the get to gether.

So last night when Kato was doing his barking of course mister wanting quiet was outside so I was not wanting him to start yelling through the fence at me giving me a lecture about my dog lol.

Anyway, I'm not going to worry too much about it anymore seeing the other neighbours seem to understand we have a puppy that is in training and training doesn't happen over night.

On a positive note, my husband came home from work this morning after stopping at the hardware store with material to make a flirt pole, which only took a few minutes and Kato absolutely loved it, he started wimpering when my husband stopped playing to go to bed lol, so I had to take over.

Thank goodness the rain held off long enough to play and wear him out as he is now fast asleep lol.

Well off to work I go for a couple hours, take care and have a great day all! (:

Kate, that picture is a great one. I've heard flirt poles are the bomb for high energy breeds with strong prey drives. I'm a little hesitant due to the blurring of the line with real life cats. If not for that issue, I'd be making one up.

Cher, yep the barking is just one of those things we all work on with varying success rates. I've found as mentioned previously that the only way I can really get a grip on it, is doing a variety of things to divert Stroms attention. Unfortunately theres no single solution to this issue. If Kato loves the flirt pole, maybe incorporate that into training. If he doesnt bark, he gets some play with the flirt pole..

One thing I would mention, if your not doing it already, would be taking Kato around with you in the car. The added socialisation of being around new things and learning that they are ok is a good thing for a pup. When I started taking Storm with me to the local shopping centre to take my eldest daughter to her school bus, Storm would bark at nearly every one and everything. As someone approached, I diverted her attention with a treat, and as they passed without her barking, she would get the treat. She soon related treats to people going past and it reduced her reactivity to new things (thank you Mr.Pavlov). Shopping centres are great because you get such a variety of people going past the socilaisation aspect is terrific.

I pick my other daughter up from school now with Storm in the back. We park right out the front of the school gate with the window down for Storm to greet everyone going past. We get there ten or fifteen minutes early and she waits patiently watching and sniffing everyone going past with her head out of the window. This is a great way to socialise a dog. Your safe in your bubble, but the dog can still use all their senses to experience the world.

Storm n me at the school pick up....

Congratulation Kate!!! Enjoy your grandson, you'll have to post a picture.

Oz- We do try and get Kato out at least a couple days a week in the truck but haven't tried sitting in any high trafficed parking lots so that is now on my to-do list (:

Today Kato and I were out on our deck and I noticed the neighbour dog out, but Kato hadn't seen him yet, so I went and sat on the step and he sat next to me and within minutes he noticed the other dog.

I was prepared and and while I was petting him I had already had a couple fingers looped under his collar ready for him to bolt and bark lol.

Well he definitely attempted full on barking, lunging and growling, I just firmly held on to him and kept petting him and telling him it's ok and he finally settled and found more enjoyment half laying on my lap getting my attention than wanting to run to the fence after the dog.

So now if I can just be prepared to act before he notices I might have a chance lol, and yes when he's barking for other reasons other than the dog I plan to use the flirt pole or at least try to distract him with it.

Speaking of the flirt pole, I do see your concern with one when it comes to not wanting Storm to have her prey drive enabled.  I noticed when looking them up on line that many people have a ball or large kong tied at the end of the rope instead of a stuffed animal so that might be an idea for you, I had told my husband to put another hole in his kong ball at the other end and tie the rope to that but he ended up tying his furry raccoon instead, but he said he will make another one this wknd with the kong ball.

Definitely a great way to exercise them with little effort and it's quite amuzing too lol.

Yay Kate how cool. Another little one enters the world. Just dont tell him when he's one year old that he's going to double his age in a year. It might freak him out :D Enjoy.

Re the way you thought I'd look, I can relate a funny story about that. Storm and I were on a walk a week or so ago, and we came upon three young ladies going the other way. I put Storm in a nice heel as we approached, but none the less they appeared a little hesitant. As they got closer, one looks at the other, and says "Im not sure which is scarier. The bloke or the dog". I got a big chuckle out of that one. The joys of owning a frightening doberman lol.

Thats not a bad idea Cher, about the Kong on a flirt pole. I might look into it. I thought of putting one on a rope and pulling it, but the pole would be much better. Thanks.

With barking, Storm has her days where nothing much bothers her, then others where the slightest thing can catch her attention. Theyre just like us I guess. Maybe you could invite the neighbour and his dog (I'm assuming its the pitty your talking about- but I could be wrong) over for a play session. It might help Kato if he can get some play lessons from an older dog.

Regarding the socialisation by car, I had to park in a busy area to drop my daughter off, so I kind of 'flooded' Storm with that one. It worked out OK but I dont like to expose her to too much all at once if I can avoid it. If I had a choice, I'd try slowly building the busy areas up. I would have gone to a low trafficked area a bit first before heading to mardi gras :) But maybe I'm being a bit too precious about it...

Well Congrats Kate on your new little membe to your family, what a joy!!!

Some updates...

Kato has doubled his weight since we got him 3wks ago at 13lbs, he is now 26lbs and growing lol.

We've had him down to the pet store for a free nail clipping just so I could see how far down to trim, the nails being black made me a bit nervous so now I now what to look for and he was great for the groomer trimming his nails too (:

He met 2 other dogs there and a few people as well and was vey well behaved and won over some new friends.

Then a trip to the vet the same day for a weight for his flea and tick application ointment and was very good there too, this was just as much a treat for us seeing how well behaved he was for 2 public places in one day around new people and other dogs.

Last night we went to our first puppy class, that was interesting lol.

At first he was well behaved but the 2 dogs on both sides of us were very vocal and after about 10min so was Kato, took a lot of treats to get his attention onto us, but over all the hour went well.  He has his first puppy play date friday evening with the pups from his class, it's part of the puppy kindergarten program.  Mondays class and Fridays puppy play.  So he will be getting well socialized for the next 5wks, then Obedience classes starting this fall.

He gets his 2nd set of shots next Tues morning so we will see how he does with that.

The trainer for all of the classes is also one of the vet nurses at our vet clinic so we're happy about that, she can help to answer many future questions I'm sure we'll have as time goes on.

Well I suppose I should get at my chores while Kato is sleeping lol, take care!  (:
