Anyone have any tips or tricks on how to teach not to counter surf lol. Ares is now tall enough nothing on the counter is safe. He does well with all his training but counter surfing. He never does it in front of me I always either hear him or catch him running past me with something. If I hear him I can say leave it and he will. Last week he ran past me with a pack of crackers (Djsdad reminded me of your DJ story) lol. Today while I went to put some laundry in the other room he got a cooking spoon out of the holder. We don't leave any food out. I'm afraid he might get a hold of a knife or something that could really hurt him.

Oh, you mean like THIS????

Actually, she DID come running thru the living room with a filet knife in her mouth once---pirate style.

She's a NINJA, I tell you.  Never see her doing it, but always see the after effects!  LOL

She's calming down a little now that she's almost 2 yrs old.  (sigh)

Lol yeah like that. I never see him just hear his nails hit the counter lol he's sneaky. Good thing she was smart enough to carry it by the handle. Ares will be 6 months on the 18th. I want to get this under control before it gets worse. And well he has figured out how to open baby gates or else I would put one up in the kitchen.

Gotta catch him in the ACT, set him up, then vent your anger. If he's not used to you being mad make sure he gets the message! Bella is really shocked when I say BAD she is so sensitive! And I have to rub it in//keep it up//until she believes me and stops wagging her tail...  because she thinks I am lying, because of course I am, its so hard to be mad at my baby&^%$#))

But really isnt he in the Doberteens/ is this not to be expected?

MY B wouldnt dream of stealing food, only paper towels out of the bathroom garbage container....

Great piccies Dj's Dad!!

Good Luck

Oh yes he knows when I'm upset with him. I just haven't been able to catch him just yet. Earlier I actually left something out just to set him up he didn't fall for it though. I'm going to keep at it.

One time Mia took a whole loaf of banana bread. I got half of it away and scolded her. Five minutes later a stick of butter was missing. I guess she wanted butter on her banana bread!  Never been able to break her of this habbit and she's two. So, we just keep the counters empty. Looks nice and clean anyway.

Mich~~~ Someone posted a solution for counter surfing.. at least for HER doberman.. She put metal baking pans on the counter and when they were disturbed, made a huge loud clanky ( it's a word) sound and scared the boy to the point that he never surfed again.

Good luck.. Have only had once incident and the was the great  Super Bowl Honey Baked Ham debacle.. But in Sofia's defense.. it WAS all gift wrapped in shiny silver paper.. LOL

Gracie is the master at counter surfing!  Well behaved in general, but just can't help herself when it comes to the kitchen.  I've become more agressive with her and trying to keep her out of the kitchen all together, even when we are not cooking.  This is difficult with our open floor plan, but i think slowly it's catching on!  LOL - she's gotten ahold of the butter dish a couple of times, and tried to eat a whole pound of butter - goof!!  Thank goodness she dropped most of it first and we were able to stop her.

Doberman puppies are definitely unlike any other breed I've encountered.  They really are goofy aren't they!!

We have recently started putting a gate across the doorway opening that goes into our kitchen when we're going to be gone from home.....it keeps DJ from getting in the kitchen to clean the counters off.
