Ok so I messed up. Since our back door is downstairs and on the opposite side of where we normally hang out,I taught Gideon to bark at the back door before I would open it - the theory being that he would alert us when he needed to go. No problem, he figured it out for the most part. Then we messed it up. Whenever he would start down the stairs, one of us would follow automatically...now he only barks when we're there. If not, he finds the most convenient place inside, which is usually between the couch and TV.

So I got smart. I put up a baby gate at the entrance to the room leading to the back door. Now he barks at the gate consistently without us being there...which is good when he gets up in the middle of the night to answer the call. What I'm now trying to figure out is how to get him to do bark at the door again. Any suggestions?

As long as he's barking why does it matter where?

'Cuz we'd prefer not to have to step over the baby gate constantly.

I have back issues.

I'm no expert but while reading the post this was my thoughts. Is it a possibiliy to move the gate closer and closer to the door until it is able to lean the gate on door then after a few days simply remove the gate from the equation completly?

Also I know that there are dog gates that that have a door in the middle so stepping over is eliminated. They are in the $100 range. I'm not sure of the rules on this forum about posting links to business websites so if you want me to give you one I can send it in a private message.

Hope this is of some help.
