Tomorrow will be my Ruby's one year birthday and for the past several days, she's been whining and carrying her toys in her mouth, putting them by her to nurse...and "arranging" the couch cushions to be like a cozy bed. Did I mention WHINING?

She doesn't eat much. She's not having trouble going poo... Does she think she's pregnant?

(she was in heat in May and we didn't let her be by any males)

Any ideas how long this will last and if that is what's going on?

(right now shes on the couch, with lots of toys nestled amongst her, sleeping-from exhaustion, no doubt)

Yep... it certainly sounds like it. Although if she's already been through a heat, she could quite possibly be pregnant.. ( you'd be surpirsed how fast that can happen)

Shortly after we got Sofia, we had her spayed.. then two weeks later she presented with the same symptoms... it was heartrending.. she lost almost 20 pounds and we were afraid we would lose her as she refused all food and water....she just stared out the window giving great ragged sighs. our vet suggested we take the 'babies' away...she snapped out of it almost over night.

Other vets suggest you just have patience and let her mother as she seems to need to .. Don't be surprised however, if she starts to lactate..

Good luck.. it can be an extremely difficult time for both of you.

Please have her checked by your vet and follow his instructions.. keep us posted.

Thank you so much for answering me. I think I'll go with letting her "do her thing" (for now at least) I just can't imagine how terrible it would be to take them away from her and cause her even more grief.

I had to laugh, when we went to bed, she forgot to bring a baby and she got up around 4 a.m., got a baby and got back into bed (she sleeps with us) and this morning...like around 7... she was STANDING on the bed BARKING at me. I thought maybe she had to go outside or something. So I got up.  Apparently I was laying on her baby.  LOL!
