Does this sound like Dominance?

My gut tells me this is some dominance but my head says, maybe it's a dobie thing, or maybe he's just super goofy.

Bruno likes to sit on me and the kids. But only on the couch. Here's what I mean: He is not allowed on furniture, period. But he does sit his butt on the couch like a person, with his legs hanging off. If I or anyone else is on the couch, he will sit there near us, and his butt is on us. Almost like he is trying to sit on the floor but he is too close to the couch. So I can't tell if it's goofiness or dominance.

He also likes to lean against me. I always called this hugs with my GSDs, but they exhibited aboslutely no other dominance signs so it didn't concern me. However I do know that this can be a sign of a dog trying to assert dominance.

Bruno likes to charge out the door and I won't allow that. He needs to sit/stay in order to go outside (or do anything.) He can't even get breakfast without a sit/stay.

So, does this sounds like some dominance that I need to address differently? If so, what are your suggestions? The sit/stay worked amazingly well for my GSDs but I don't know if a different technique would be better for an ADHD dobe.

Thank you in advance!

The leaning honestly doesn't sound like dominance... it sounds like your dober-boy just wanting some lovins... While he's sitting on you, does he allow you to push him off? This sounds like something my dane used to do. He would creep closer and closer till he was LITERALLY on top of you, than look like a beaten puppy when you told him to move his butt. If he starts to get growly when you push him off your feet or tell him to get off, thats when I would be worried... otherwise, it just sounds like the infamous "velcro fur", sticking to ya no matter what. lol

He just wants to be by you, most dobermans do this kinda stuff.  Nothing to worry about.

Oh good.... thank you. He does get off when I tell him, I just say "Bruno off" and gets sad and lays down on the floor in front of us. He REALLY wants to lay in my lap but he's just way too big! ometimes at night he half lays by my bed and lays his head next to me on the pillow. Sweet boy.

Thank you so much for assuaging my concerns!

Dobermans have earned the nickname Velcro dogs for a reason. Nothing to worry about.

Normal dobie behaviour, Cleo has to be touching you and often plonks her butt on my knee and just sits there looking all innocent.

I love it when DJ leans on me, but, like so many dobermans, she MUST be touching me somehow somewhere every time she is near.  If I'm on the couch, she has her head in my lap.  If I am standing, she either leans on me or puts her foot on my foot.

They just cant help letting you know how much they LOVE you.

Now, here's the REAL question...  Is he too big to sit on your lap, or is your lap too small??  lol.  I swear, doesn't matter how big they get, they think they are a 7lb dog.

Our laps are too small... lol. They will never be too big, they're just pups after all, right??? I swear Skyler still thinks she's the 10 lb pupper she was when I brought her home. lol

yea lol.  You're saying "Dang, this pooch is too big, my legs are going numb" and pooch is thinking "How am I supposed to lay on this tiny little lap?  Don't worry, I'll get in there!"

Sofia is a leaner too.. It's endearing and I love it. Also she will sneak up on me and place her muzzle in my cupped hand.. very sweet and it's a perfect fit.

Awww!! You know, I am really loving his affectionate nature. My little dogs are lovey, but they are hyper and bouncy. Bruno just relishes love and he's so gentle and sweet. I can't say enough good about him! And knowing that he's just showing love, not being dominant, makes it so much better. I am completely hooked and I don't think I will ever have any other breed in the future.

If you Google 'velcro dog' and scroll to the bottom of the first page there's a webpage that actually lists Doberman Pinscher as the actual definition of this :D... he's just gotta tell you he loves you. Don't have my Dobe yet, gotten a little closer now that I'm talking to a good breeder, but my horse does this too. Try having a 1500 pound, 16.5hand horse lean on you then we can compare notes LOL

Dakota will sit next to me, (read "on me" ) and creepily stare at me, to the point that you almost wanna scream "Dude, wtf are you doing, you're creeping me out" lol.  She will literally sit there, head on my lap, staring, for as long as I can sit still.

My first dobe was a female "Susie" she did the same thing, she would back herself up to the couch and sit her butt there just like a person..  then slowly get herself up on the couch and then lay across me.  She had to be touching constantly.   I love that about dobies, they have so much love to give and are the most loyal dog there is.  I now have a little male Jake, he's 9 weeks now.  He has to be touching all the time, I will grab him and kiss his entire face, he just loves it all up.. :o)
