Hi

I have a wonderful 2 year old male Doberman, Duke, who is a fantastic dog with just one small issue. When people call at the house, Duke is made to sit and stay behind us while we greet the visitor and then Duke generally greets them afterwards with a sniff and a big happy lick. He'll then go about his business and settles very quickly with the visitor, that is until they go to leave.

As soon as they head towards the front gate, he chases them barking and jumping and mouthing. He never acts like this when my husband or I go to leave, or with people he knows really well, but most often with people he is unfamiliar with. I have heard that dobermans will let intruders in, but not let them out, but I wondered if anyone has had similar experiences and could offer any tips on how to deal with it.

Thanks!

Growing up, friends of ours that had 2 dobes had the same issue, they were perfectly fine so long as you were visiting and being a part of the family dynamic, but as soon as you were about to leave they would get defensive.  The only way that you could leave without any issue was not to announce that you were leaving, it seemed that the dogs would get riled up with the change in everyone's demeanor, so you would just stand up and leave without getting the dogs worked up.
