Mt 10 month old (intact female) is going through the "terrible twos". I'm aware her behaviour isn't an uncommon one is teen Dobermans, but I'm getting really frustrated with her barking, growling, lunging and NEED to get to other dogs we see.

"Barking, growling and lunging" sounds like aggressive behaviour. Other people see it like that, but she just wants to get over and say hi, and then play. When she can sniff the dog, she's friendly as can be. Occasionally her hackles'll make an appearance, but her main goal is to PLAY, PLAY, PLAY!

I don't want to make her "teenage behaviour" a permanent behaviour, but I also want to start ridding her of it. How do I go about it?

I'm currently getting her to "Sit-Wait" whenever we see another dog. It's working pretty well, and in three days, she went from "IMMA GET YOU, THEN WE GONNA PLAY!" to "Ooooh, I really wanna play wiff yooh..." with small/medium sized dogs. She's still a little 'OOC' with big dogs, but we're getting there slowly-slowly.

Is what I'm doing now alright? I can't see how it'll backfire, but something a complete stranger said got me thinking, and now I just want to put my mind at ease.

I was told that "You'll get no where trainin' like that. If you don't let 'er see what she wants, she'll always wan' it, and 'da behav'or will a'ways be sizzlin' under there." Aside from the bad grammar, what he said made a bit of sense. I shouldn't be taking it seriously (he was a complete stranger with a Labrador that was behaving worse than Kay, in different ways) but, as I said, just after peace of mind.

from DobieWanKenobi: ....he was a complete stranger with a Labrador that was behaving worse than Kay, in different ways

Well, there's your proof that his theory isn't the greatest one going. LOL

Welcome to the group, BTW.  (LOVE your screen name, too!)

I start my dogs out when they are young (3 - 4 months) by conditioning them to not bark at dogs we see when we are out walking.  Ziva will be 2 yrs old soon, and I am not exaggerating one bit---we can walk past multiple yards on our walks where there are dogs that will run up and down the fence row barking their little heads off ---and howling in the case of the yard where 8 beagles live--- and Ziva never gives it a 2nd thought.  No barking, no lunging, no interest in those dogs whatsoever.  She sort of just looks at them, says "pffftttt", rolls her eyes and continues her walking as if they didnt exist.

I used a couple of different methods to achieve this.  First, I made sure that I had her FULL attention when I saw that we were about to walk past a dog in a yard.  I had treats ready to give her, made her watch ME, not the other dog, and praised her highly when she would ignore the dog in the fence that was calling out to her.  Later, when she was a tiny bit older, she wanted to occasionally give in and lurch towards them, and I had an empty aluminum soda can with about 8 pennies dropped down into it and the opening taped shut that I would shake like the dickens when she started to lunge, then reward her for redirecting her attention to me instead of the dog.  We'd deliberately walk past these same yards over and over again (I'm sure the owners of the noisy dogs were beginning to get a little sick & tired of it) and I sort of 'desensitised' her to those things.  It paid off big time.  Ziva does bark when she is in her OWN yard and something or someone walks by, but when we are in the car or out walking on a leash, dogs in yards are not anything she finds interesting enough to bark at.  Makes for a much more enjoyable walk.

I have a little Rat terrier that just could never get the hang of not barking, though.....it's a real pain to take her for a walk if we run across other dogs, because she just will NOT shut up for anything.

Thanks Ziva's Dad.

I briefly thought about a rattle bottle, but wasn't sure if it'd have adverse affects on her. I always seem to forget that it's what happens LAST that dogs usually pay attention to. "The loud, scary noise happens when a dog walks past, but there's lots of smelly, nommy treats in the end" sort of thing. I always think that the bit that startles the dog is what she's going to pay attention to.

Until I think about it. Then it's a "Doh!" moment. Hehheh.

There's a house right on the corner where we walk that has dogs that bark. I'll devise a plan for our next walk, so that I can work on her reaction to it. The fence that keeps the barking dogs in their yard isn't very stable, and you have to walk literally RIGHT next to it. I can't guarantee that kay wouldn't defend herself if the dogs got voer and had a go at her (as they have with our previous Dobie) and I'd rather not risk it. Would be a pretty big set-back in her training, too!

Talking about training makes me feel really optimistic about it. "It will work the first time, I tell you!" I'm off for our evening walk. Have a feeling I'll just make it an around-the-block walk. She's been pretty good today, and I don't want to get too cocky. Hehheh.

Well thanks everyone.

Most people call me DWK, but I've been known to answer to Obi, Ken, Dobie, and I believe it was somebody from Germany, who didn't speak much English, that referred to me as "Wanker". I'm not sure what you all think of that last one, hehheh. Seriously, call me what you like. "DobieWanKenobi" is a mouthful.

"Click to see in Warlock form!"...Heh, good times. A few weeks ago, somebody referred to Kay as a Warlock Doberman. I've been calling everything that's, ahem, "bigger than average" (not in that way...) "Warlock" since. Just for my own amusement. The original "click to see-" didn't seem fitting enough.

I'm glad you all like me. *unpacks virtual possessions*

Hello DobieWan!  I am very new here too, but I wanted to give you a BIG welcome. It took me a while to figure out what everyone was talking about with the warlock thing, but I got it!  HILARIOUS!
