I introduced Princess to Red outside, and outside the fenced back yard (as close to neutral as I could get). I did have to supervise play, because the play between a 100+ pound 6 year old and a 20 pound puppy can get out of hand quickly. She would want to escalate it, but I had to make sure he didn't get too rough. I don't think you will have quite that problem. She should be able to tell him on her own, back off buster.

I feed all of mine separately. Red is fed in the office/computer room and the others are fed in their crates. (They also have water bowls as well with both food and water bowls attached to the side.)

I do not walk them as I sorta have my own private dog park. When going to the vet, I lead them out separately and take them in separately as Red can be a hand full (even for me) if he decides he's going one way when I want him to go another, although 99% of the time his leash is loose and he's heeling nicely.

I feel certain you and they will do fine.

Congrats on the new addition to your family, I want to get Snoopy a friend but it is just not the right time yet for my family and I.  She is a pretty dog and from the looks of her I think she will also let Q know when he pushing her buttons.

:D Thanks guys as always for your input.
Well Sophie has been with us a week now. SPCA rang one day after her spaying and asked if i would take her. I explained that i had ordered a crate but it wouldnt be here for a few days and that as they already knew i did have a playful dobie in situ. 'No worries' we will lend you a crate...we are desparate for the room.
So Sophie arrived and i introduced her to Q away from the section..all good there but of course Q wants to play with her and i have to keep saying No. He has  knocked her flying a couple of times which worries me...thinking of her invisable sutures. He will also practice his death kills on her...either by cutting off the windpipe or over the back of the spine. She dosnt seem to mind this so i guess its a dog thing?
At the moment i have to take them out separately so that Q can get a good run. They are great together when both on the leash but off leash it just isnt healthy for her. If i let Q off he wont do his normal thing with chasing balls etc just wants to 'get the puppy'
I hope this will settle down????
Will post some pics soon. :D
Q isnt camera shy

Not only keeping them in focus, but keeping both of them still long enough to snap that shutter is difficult!!!  It's been 3 weeks & I can only get snaps of Brinks & Milady when they're asleep  :-[  Like you I'm hoping that things will settle down - eventually!

Sofi is gorgeous - the contrast between her dark brindle & Q's handsome red shows both to advantage.  & yeah, this might be a doberman forum, but any friend of Q's is a friend of ours!!   ;D

Ahhh Ria.. I love the way Q is looking at his new little Sofie.. It's like he's saying, "you're my little sister now and you're safe in your fur ever home. You're gunna love mum, she's the  best!"

Nah, he's thinking "If she moves I'm gonna pounce on her".  ;D  (The muscles in his rear legs are coiled for action)

:D You are right mr Green, but thankfully he does good 'long stays'
I don't really get it? >:(. I thought that Q was well socialised, he meets lots of dogs at classes as well as on the beach. Yet i have never seen him like this. What's even weirder is despite all the aggro...Sophie goes back for more and even makes a game of it by escaping underneath the house where Q can't fit, then pops up in another place.  ;DShe will go up to him and take his bones away and he lets her?
I wanted the puppy to be a positive thing, i dont want to keep saying No! all the time.
Oh well on a good note... I found out Sophie can swim like a fish...and she is very much a scent hound compared to Q who is mainly sight :D
I think I need to go in a crate Dabbles...i'm not used to all the mayhem... :D
KT I hope they do become best of friends. :)

To me it sounds as if they are the best of friends. When I let Princess out of her crate, the first place she goes is to Red's to wait for him to come out. Then she starts jumping on him all the was to the back door. I have to keep telling them to knock it off for I can't get past them to get to the door.

Outside they run around a bit, and of course with his larger size and added weight, he can knock her down easily. He doesn't do that very often anymore, but the will give her all the play she wants. Then she moves off a bit for a little while and then right back at it.

From your description, it sounds like healthy play to me. Yes, when they "play" in the house, things can get a bit dicey really fast. You will have to get them to the point that when you say (yell) down, they stop and lay down.

Do not worry about Q being too rough on Sophie. She looks like she's full grown and in reasonably good shape. If he gets to be too much, she will stop it in an instant by turning belly up. When she does that she is surrendering and he will stop. They both are enjoying a full time play mate, possible for the first time for Sophie. (We know it's the first time for Q).

Sophie is just enjoying a loving home with a loving playmate.

:D Thank you....I do worry about the roughness but it does seem to have improved a little bit this week.
I want us to be a nice pack and i guess i'm just not used to Q barring his teeth. I don't like shouting ??? ;) But at least he does stop when i shout ENOUGH! now ;D
Sophie weighs about 30lb now, im thinking she has a little more to grow.
Renewing Q's yearly shots tomorrow so will be good to see how his weight is going... :)

CSI MEMBER

Had to post this although its not very good as the sunlight was streaming through the backdoor.
Here's Q a fully paid member of CSI...Counter Surfer Inc. founder member of this group being Red followed by the beautiful undersecretary Princess. Q has been caught going out the door with a tub of butter before and ive even found my credit card in the garden.

I got Q to be my companion, my darling faithful friend (which he has been) and ive often thought that he probably wouldnt make much of a guard dog. :)
He totally proved me wrong there.  ;)When at 3am some friends came to stay. I told them that the door was unlocked and just to come in. I forgot to tell Q.
Q didnt make a sound when the car pulled up,... nothing to footsteps on the drive...nothing... until a hand was put on the door handle and then he brought the house down :D and jumped the worktop.

Ria~~
I can only imagine how gratifying it was to hear that thunderous roar that only means Doberdog on duty!! We get used to our sweet tempered kids and tend to forget that their very nature it protect and serve ( sorry L.A.P.D.)
Love this picture of your CSI agent. Have never had that problem with Sofia.. she's never jumped up to the counter for anything and in fact, being a "passionate cook" ( read: messy) it would be nice to have a little assistance in the kitchen at times.
Let us know how much your boy weighs tomorrow. He's a gorgeous guy.

Ria - I imagine your friends had quite a start. There is nothing like a full throated deep chested Doberman bark. Princess is not quite there yet, she has the volume, but not quite the depth and resonance of Red. He can really rattle the windows.

When I had to go into the hospital 4 years ago on an emergency basis, I put the Schnauzers on the front porch in their crates, and Red in the back yard. I knew he could be approached in the back yard by the vet assistants, but I wasn't sure anyone could approach him in the house. My good friend came out with them and transported Red to the vet's, he commented that all the way there, Red treated him like a popsicle, licking him all the way.

KiaOra guys
Hope everybody is well??
Winter is beginning soon here but hopefully the sun will continue to shine. Awesome walk this morning on the beach. We saw a Southern Right whale with calf. So named due to their tendancy to float near the top of the water..making them the right whale to hunt. Thankfully no hunting allowed in our waters so they can meander as they wish.
Q and Sophie are doing well, Q's scars have all healed up barring one small white one on his neck. He dosnt appear to have suffered any after effects of his attack although I dont think his bark is as loud???Maybe some damage there to his vocal cords. Q is very laid back still with all dogs.
Sophie on the other hand has had some problems and shows signs of fear aggression when approaching other dogs, but i hope we can get over this with some classes.
Was windy out on the beach today but i had to take this shot of my batdog ;D

and one of both puppies...Gosh hard to beieve that Q will be two come late november
:)

They play rough in the garden, but i wont allow it on our beach walks...thats far too much poundage for me if they run into me.

It's so amazing to see in right before your eyes how quickly they grow.  I am barely starting to notice just how quickly Kratos grew, he's already looking like a fine young dobie just as your Q does.  He's quite handsome and I'm so happy that you have Sofie, there are plenty of lovely pups that need adopting into a good home such as yours, you're a wonderful person. ::)  Already doing some research on possibly adopting a dobie from a doberman rescue, but that's only until Kratos is fully trained and I'm sure he can handle sharing mommy's love... ;D
