HI all... I have been semi absent and i post daily but havent been updating on kids since my gram passed. I have been havin major issues with my health and the kids have as well... I havent even told LK about raven...

Raven and I both have thyroid problems. we are both borderline.... She has huge bald spots on her chest and face and her head looks so small for her body....

Cisco is well ummmm... a huge handful... he has become almost close to a nightmare...

I have no idea where or what to do... Training is a joke to him .

I have along with the borderline thyroid problem been diagnosed with other things that make it hard for me to function. Josh works around clock and I am ready to ship him to bording school... there is one near here who promises a perfect dog when you get them back

Am I wrong? I can control her... him is just a major fight everyday. I have bruises ans scars from him being totally out of of control.

Mandy! I'm so sorry to hear all of this from you! :( You can get through this. You're a strong person! And Cisco.. Well, he's Cisco, you've done all you can and hopefully this boarding school can do something about his behavior :(

Praying that you, Raven and Cisco do better!

Darlin' Girl.. You KNOW I know.. and the first order of business is to get YOU back in shape and healthy again.. Without that you can't even start to cope with all the other stuff going on.

Sofia has low thyroid and so do I..( it's a Mother daugher-dobe thing I guess) and  it's really scary at first thought.. but a daily dose of an itty bitty pill makes it all go away ( I promise)

Cisco will get the training professionals can offer.... Raven's hair will grow back and your energy will return and then you can face the rest of the world.

It must feel like everything is closing in on you.. Just breathe.

None of us are going anywhere and we're all here for you. With much love and many prayers.

Mandy.. the medical aspects will calm down.. I have been through my own health crisis (kidney failure, GI problems, etc) and stress only makes it worse.  If Cisco is stressing you and Raven out then yes, send him to a boarding program.  Or board him at a doggy day camp during the day to wear HIS BUTT OUT.

I'm switching gears with my training with Steve, I love all the positive reinforcement training and I really appreciate Kevin's tactics that he uses.  With Steve, they don't work or maybe I don't work with them.  I'm doing the remote collar training and found a WONDERFUL resource on youtube.  I think it will help me refine Steve and get him to where I need him to be before baby comes.

We all love you and your kids! We want to be here for you.  You know any questions you can always PM.  Don't think Cisco is not going to come back.. he will.. he's reacting to all the changes in you and sometimes our furry kids react in the worse ways possible.

Keep your chin up.  Find something positive in every day.  Raven's thyroid will be fine once on medicaiton just like Kate said.

Hug hug hug hug!

Mandy - are they doing anything for YOUR thyroid?  I've been under and over borderline for more than 30 years - they call it "intermittent" so no prescribed treatment for me.  (I try to control it holistically)

When your thyroid is low, everything is overwhelming - even everyday tasks like brushing your teeth.  (and OMG the mood swings!)  When you add everything that you've been through in the past year on TOP of that...  Yikes!!!

Jess is right - send him to doggy daycare to wear his butt out.  If you feel you NEED to send him to a trainer that's what you have to do.  (and you have no idea what it costs me to say that - I've seen really bad things happen in places like that!)  For the cost of boarding school you could possibly get 1-on-1 training like C_F did.

But I think when you get leveled out and not feeling like you are reeling from crisis to crisis you will find that Cisco will settle down too.  This is just my opinion, backed up by the fact that Brinks did - settle down that is.  However, YOU are the only one who knows what is best for you.

They'll prescribe meds for Raven & she'll be feeling better in a bit (it's not instantaneous unfortunately).

Just like Steve knew something was going on with Jess before she found out she was pregnant, Cisco & Raven know something is going on with you.

Okay, this is pretty scattered, but I hope you know we love you & are praying hard everything will work out for the best!  Positive dobervibes winging their way north to you...

Hugs, Kisses & Scritches

Marti, Brinks & MiLady

I'm sorry Mandy that things are not going well.

Thinking of you and sending lots of love your way.

Oh Sweetie!  I'm sorry you're having such a rough time :(  I agree with LK, getting YOU better is number one priority!  You will get through this!  It won't last forever...just take a deep breath, it's all gonna be ok.  And if you have to put the kid in daycare or training to give yourself a break, don't feel like it's a failure on your part.  It's absolutely not.  Like everyone else said, he's probably just reacting to the fact that things aren't quite normal around your place these days.

I had more to say, but upon reading realized it's already been said a few times :)  I won't repeat, but just know that you have support from all of us, and a shoulder or an ear is just a PM away!  Lots of love and hugs, we're thinking of you...xoxoxo

Mandy---saying prayers for you, the kids and the entire situation.  The good think about the 'valleys' we go through is that it makes us really appreciate the 'mountaintops' when we get back up there---and you'll be back up on top before you know it.  If Cisco needs a little time away from home to learn some manners, then so be it.  Might do him a world of good.  And Raven's thyroid problem is going to be controllable, so dont stress over that.  Main thing is, take care of YOU, and everything else will fall into place.

Thank you all so very much. Raven starts her meds today and I unfortunately didn't get perscribed anything either Marti- I am going to the vitamin/healthfood shop down the street from work and going to see what they have to help. I am already on a vitamin D supplement because my level was critically low.

As for the boarding school- it is a one on one 5 day training at a kennel not far from my house. My akita Wyatt went through it and he came back such a better dog. Cisco just doesn't take no for an answer- He is challenging me with everything!

http://www.brizeskennel.com/training.php

As they say when it rains it pours. Things will get better though. AFter I wrote this last night the big lug came up and cuddled down with me on the couch and gave me a huge kiss across my face and then hunkered down in my lap and went to sleep. I know my sweet boy is still there- He just needs some manners.

I am physically too tired and weak to train with him right now so I think the class may be my only hope.

Love to u all!

Oh Mandy, ditto ditto ditto to everything said above.  Cisco senses that's something wrong with you and his sissy, and he doesn't know how to cope.  I think a few days away would be good for him.  It'd give him something else to think about and focus on rather than the unsettled vibes around your house.  It'll give you a chance to catch your breath and get yourself back.  I'm feeling that you're about on your last straw, and YOU need a break.  Take it!!  Raven will be fine, Cisco will come back and be better and love you as much as ever.  YOU are the one to focus on now, just like the harried mom that gives all to the family and never to herself,  she's no good to anyone after a while.  Preserve yourself mentally, physically and emotionally and everyone else is just going to have to deal with it. Thank you for posting, you know we're all here for you!       Much Love, Wendy and Fancy

JJ was a handful until I started bringing him to the dog park. It almost seemed like the other dogs were teaching him how to be a good dog. They wouldn't let him act bad plus he is very tired when we get home. A tired dog is a good dog, LOL. Maybe you can try that if there is a dog park in your area. I hope you feel better, JJ and I will say a prayer for you.

Thanks LJ,Chris and Jes!

@Jes that is a great idea! I know one of the vettechs has a dobe and she does dog sitting and such on the side. Maybe I can see if she can come and help Josh out... He works long hours and it is tough for him to walk them both- plus he is starting a new job here in about 3 weeks... so he will be traveling and I will be alone most evenings!

I am so blessed to have you all! What a great team we all make!

Glad you got Cisco enrolled in the daycare and meds for Raven.  I and L&L send hugs and prayers your way.

I have low thyroid too and take  synthroid for it.  It's a thyroid hormone replacement.  You should see if you need it.  A simple blood test will tell.

We have thought about doggie day care for our guys too.  They have so much energy to burn off.  The dog park does work wonders for burning off energy too.

Funny because Lance is our stubborn one too.  Lola is so obedient.  When the two are playing together, she responds to our commands before he does.  BOYS!  :-)  They also know when they "are in the doghouse."  So sweet of Cisco to be such a big lug and give you a kiss to make up.

It is amazing how he goes from night to day constantly- He was pretty much an angel today at lunch and this morning... No backtalking or nipping at my hand which is his new thing- Thought we had that done with at 12 weeks... Ugh! So we shall see what happens over the next coming weeks and boarding school is happening regardless.

Actually, hypothyroidism is diagnosed in about 3-5% of the US population.  However, some estimate that the actual number of people afflected is much higher due to mis-diagnosis and some drs using the old "you just need to exercise more & eat better" routine.  Usually, unless you have some type of family history of thyroid problems, it's not even considered.  Of course, what some drs refuse to remember is that until 30 years ago or less if you didn't have a goiter there was "nothing wrong with your thyroid".

Sorry I have come in late to this thread.  Mandy your poor poor thing, you deserve a break.  You have given these kids everything you have.  Unfotunately, if Cisco doen't want to play nicely it is time you bring in the big guns!  I think that sending him to boot camp is going to be the best thing for your family, it is time he learns to start respecting you.  I went through respect issues with Athena, but I was lucky enough to be able to work through it with a PT.  But I am telling you I wouldn't have hesitated sending her away if it meant I would have a well behaved, well mannered, respectful pup.  Your making the right decision, don't feel guilty.

Spend the time away taking care of you!  Raven will be get better in time.  Take a spa day right before he comes home to help you relax and prepare for your new stress free life!  I am thinking Massage, facial, mani/pedi, seaweed wrap and anything else you can pamper yourself with!

We are your family and will help you get though this hard time!

Hugs and echos for sentiments expressed above. I feel your pain with Cisco.  I'm wondering if I won't eventually have to do the same with Gauge.   You're not doing him wrong by sending him, you're still trying to help. It's a million times better than saying "I'm done!"

Take care of YOU!  When it rains it pours, but hopefully there's a rainbow on the horizon for all of you.

Hi all- Well I haven't really updated on Raven's thyroid on here and I thought I had- When I went to pick up her meds- Dr Lisa had rechecked her bloodwork and said she doesn't think Raven is Hypo but it is something to watch- so she never got on meds. We switched her food yet again to another grain-free and her weight came down and her hair was coming back in nicely. Well anyways after a month her hair only grew back in under her chin and on the sides of her face- Her chest became worse and then she developed some small bumps in that area- Needless to say we went back to the vet finally last night.

They did a scrape and did some bloodwork- She diagnosed as a bacterial skin infection that probably has been "festering" as she put it since birth- It doesn't shock me considering. Anyways she is on meds for 2 weeks w/ a recheck. And they just called me back w/ bloodwork results (love how fast they are!)

Her thyroid looks better- but we will still watch. But there is some stuff askew and the vet said that the meds should help that it is from the infection.

Hang in there, it will get better. I am glad Raven is doing better, and hopefully The Kid will come back from camp a better boy.

I am a little suprised your Dr. didn't prescribe something to boost you up, even on a temp. basis.

I don't get down into the Off Topic too often and missed this until now.

Make sure to finish the antibiotics - I know it takes a long time, if its cephalexin (cheaper antibiotic than clavamox) but well worth it.  Steve had his skin infection for almost 3 months!  My vet joked he had a "cephalexin deficiency".  Oh boy.  But first month of antibiotics I hit finals and forgot to give them and Eli wasn't as good either... second time around we got it and eventually he cleared up no problem.  The shampoo really helps the stink, I thought, and I'd scrub it in and let him soak for 10 minutes before I thoroughly rinsed him with cold water.

Keep staying positive Mandy.. it all gets more managable - both yours and the kids health.  Hughughug.

When I had Red on just the Thyrosin, I had no problems as I kept the pills next to the food measuring cup. However, when the other meds came along and they varied in timing (2 twice a day and 1 once a day) I used two pill minders for him. One for the AM feeding and one for the PM feeding. I had two very small ones for my use and I went down to one (7 day setup vs 14 day) and I had a medium sized one that had been a promotion and was in the cabinet so I didn't have to buy anything. But, they are cheap and help in keeping track of of whether you have or have not given/takem meds.
