My local radio station has this daily feature called "Sell & Swap Shop" where people can call in and tell what they have for sale or looking to buy or whatever.  Today, I heard a lady call in and say that she has a female pug that is in heat right now, and she would like ANYONE with a male pug to call her, because her dog "is in dire need".  WHAT????  Just because you have a female dog of any kind that is in heat, it's not mandatory that you breed her, get puppies, sell the ones that you can and dump the rest at the shelter when they are too much trouble and you never really wanted 5 pugs anyhow.  And if that wasn't bad enough, after a few more calls about used cars etc, a man called in and said he has a male Sheltie and he would really like a pup out of him, so if someone with a female Sheltie would call him he would make breeding arrangements.  Good grief.  Dont people realize that in order to "get a pup" that anywhere between 5 - 10 more could possibly come as siblings?  What are they going to do with the others?  Our humane society is so full right now that they dont have room for anything else, and here are these yahoos wanting to make puppies just to make a buck.  It makes me sick.  I am SUCH an advocate for spay & neuter that this sort of thing makes me steam.  I'm SO thankful that dobermans are a rarity around here.

Oh NO!! I know me and my advocate mouth.. I would have called in to rant at those people..

Baja is overwhelmed by strays and if they're reported, they get picked up,. thrown in "jail", starved and beaten.. We have a coalition here in Bajamar and an agreement with the local vets. When we find a stray in the neighborhood, they are  immediately fostered until someone can take them into the city where the vets will spay or neuter them and try to find a home..( There are twelve rescues on this block alone..) If they aren't rehomed within a month, sadly they are put down. Not a good solution, I know, but better than the alternative of running the streets or being tortured.. It's the only thing I dislike about living in Mexico. The stray dogs..

I  think I reported that a couple of months ago a group of vets got together and spayed and neutered close to a hundred dogs at no charge. They were all owned by local families that either didn't have the money to have the dogs fixed, or they didn't understand the dire necessity. It is so  heartbreaking to see the pups being sold on the side of the road. We do what we can, but it is a huge HUGE problem here.

One of my old bosses goes down to Mexico once a year and works in a spay/neuter clinic in Mexico.  I'm not sure what part.

And the idiocy of people at large just frustrates me... sigh.

Jes~ I am so happy to hear about that.. There are just so many street dogs here and it is so unbelievably sad. We have two vets in Ensenada who do the same thing for almost no charge at any time a stray is brought in.. They are also inoculated for Parvo and Distemper.

The clinic you are talking about ( I think) is in Rosarito and it's a twice a year thing. It's getting more and more attention. We can do it.. One dog at a time.

As we were leaving the MX track on Sunday we passed a couple in a parking lot with a big sign that said 'Blue Pitts for sale'.   They were literally trying to sell Pitt Bull puppies out of the back of their car.....I wanted to stop an inform them of how unbelievably irrisponsible and retarded they were....then maybe slap them a few times.

I'm sure can imagine how that interview process went for potential buyers......

Hi,  oh you have cash - great pick one - good luck!

I wonder if the majority of people actually looking for a dog as a pet, really give thought to much of anything other than they want a pet and it needs to be a dog.  Really, when I read Ziva's Dad's post here, I just knew that the punchline would be the woman was looking for a male dog.  But she narrowed it down to a pug male.  Good for her! She sounded a bit desperate! I do appreciate that she wanted to breed to the same breed!  Imagine how confusing and just genetically wrong (my opinion, not meant to offend anyone - as a kid I had the very best mixed breed dogs, and they were wonderful pets that I would not have given up for anything) for an animal to have a part of his genetics telling him he is a lap dog and the other part telling him he is to become a hearding animal. I totally agree with Ziva's Dad and everyone else in this post that we who do love animals, must advocate for their improved living conditions. ¡Salud, Katie for the work in Mexico!

If we can educate our kids at an early age, I think we can see results beyond our wildest hopes. I would encourage you to take an interest in schools and put together a neighborhood dog show that is meant as education and perhaps not leaning to the best in breed, but an explanation to the youngsters of why there are standards.  And the need to research before purchasing. And the areas to research.

A few months ago I came across an ad someone had put in the newspaper wanting to breed their "rare" white Doberman.  I promptly emailed the person (there was no phone number) informing them of the health issues with albino Dobermans and asked them to please not breed this dog and pull their ad.  Of course I never heard back from them.

people dont' care - we live in an immedaite gratification society.  You wake up one day and decide you want a dog and you simply go get one.   There is not such thing as planning, or saving up the money for something.  Why do all that when you can just charge it on the card and go...

it will be our downfall one day I'm afraid....
