Hello Forum family.. I was reading a post from Jim Rena, and they ( I think it's a 'they') mentioned how they spoil Alexis.. I was replying and added that we too spoil our Sofia and "why not?'

My question for all of you is:

Just that.. "Why Not?"

If given proper nutrition, and you don't mind if they sleep where 'some folks' think they shouldn't ( i.e.. your bed, the sofa, Uncle Jim's favorite chair) what's wrong with spoiling your kids?

Does it do any harm in the long run?

Sofia has never EVER jumped on anyone.. she doesn't beg.. she's not stolen any food ( oops except the block of cream cheese and the Super Bowl slice of ham. but in her defense . it was all gift wrapped in shiny silver paper.. and she probably thought it was a present just for her..)

Never in her wildest imagination would she eat a shoe, a towel, underwear, or even a stuffie..

So why not spoil with love and attention and taking her everywhere we can, and checking on her in the middle of the night and kissing her and breathing the same air through our noses??

I promise to keep an open mind and please.. let's hear ( read ) your thoughts

P.S. If you do spoil your baby... how?

I think any dog deserves the love their human parents can give. Being a young rescue, Bella was a little unsure of herself, but has blossomed into a youthful maturity and surrendered completely to her new surroundings with a huge return of the affection we have given her.

Bella is totally spoiled. We do our best to give her our love and express it as best we can in ways so she knows it. Her response to us is complete devotion, she follows us around the house and doesn't like to be left out. She knows we are coming back if we leave because we tell her so and I also tell her in my mind when we are ready to come back, that we are on the way...

She gets a special diet with partly homecooked fresh chicken, and when its chicken day she gets the choice pieces fed to her by hand.

She gets to get on the sofas and the bed, but does not sleep with us. But just wait till it gets cool again, I used to worry about her getting out from under her blanket!

She gets pet insurance and we hope never to use it, but to have that as a 'prepay' gives us alot of peace of mind as far as her future health care.

She gets new toys bought for her so she can destroy them or throw them away, over the cliff.

She gets taken out on walks and for play and training every day, and is run full speed on the beach and on the trail. She waits until we are done with dinner and then its PLAYTIME!!!! Because she has been sleeping all day when its hot. She gets taken wherever we possibly can go with a dog.

Can't wait to hear more about our friends and their dobies!!

Woof from Bella

and Julia and Michael, the proud and Very Happy dog owners

All mine are 'spoiled', but I tend to spoil DJ the most.  For all of them, I custom-make their nightly meal... a cup or so of kibble with a teaspoon of melted butter and a spoonful of canned dogfood, or kibble and cottage cheese, or kibble and leftover steak pieces and juices from the skillet, or kibble and yogurt....it's different every night and they love the surprise and variety. Dj has called me "Emril" a time or two.  LOL

I drive DJ 20-some miles every Saturday just to see her best doggie friend, Freelove, and either do a couple hour leash walk together, or a couple of hours off leash at the dog park.  On the way home, I'll stop at McD's for an iced tea for me and a cold water in a cup for her.  Sometimes, I'll buy me a burger and her a plain burger (no ketchup, mustard or pickles). I also take her to doggie daycare 2 x each month, and that requires me to get up and leave the house earlier than usual, drive 25 miles to the daycare, 25 miles back to work, where I clock in a half hour late, after work, drive the 25 mile distance to pick her up, then 25 miles back home.  It's a 100-mile highway day for me just to let my dog have a good time for 10 hours.  But, it's so worth it when I pick her up and they tell me what a great time she had playing and running with the big dogs....and she sleeps like a rock all night long!

DJ sleeps in our bed, right up against the bend of my knees.  Most of our littles find a spot in the king-sized bed, also, but they all have 'assigned seats' so there is never a battle for the best spot or a better spot.  We try to make each dog feel special every single day.

Even though I know how quickly DJ destuffs toys, I will still buy one for her at a yard sale or thrift shop if it's cheap enough to let her get 50-cent's worth of fun out of it.  Cleaning up the pile of stuffing is a small thing to me.

I love my dogs, and I can tell that they love me.  I get so many compliments all the time on how pretty DJ is and how well behaved she is...I will always believe she is well behaved because we have a mutual love and respect for each other.

Plus...I love to spoil her.  It's fun.

LOVE these!

Ginger sleeps on the bed every night (my favorite thing and thankfully, John's too).  She has full access to the living room furniture and has shredded the arms and seat of the chairs by running up to watch to dragons walking, running, bicycling outside. The bed in her cage is sweet (rivals any temperpedic mattress) and she has a nice flannel sheet around it on top and three sides to keep it draft free and private. She eats Blue Buffalo Wilderness and gets little pieces of whatever we are eating. Tuesday pizza night is her favorite.  :)  John comes in the house with the pizza box and says, "Is it Pizza Night?!!!" and she gets so excited. We fenced in the backyard for her safety.  She is my constant companion and I talk to her all of the time and kiss her and pet her constantly. She is sleeping on the bed next to me as I am typing this. Like DJ's Dad, I know that she knows how much I love her and that makes me happy.  I tell her how beautiful she is all of the time because she really is. John takes her walking and even though she can barely stand it, she'll sit for him to put on her harness and then get up and step into the one leg (it is the cutest thing). I watch them go down the street and it is so funny to see how happy she is.  Every night when John comes home from work he'll get down on the floor and say "Did you get your hug today?" and she'll come over and be all flat and whine while he hugs her. If I'm there, sometimes it is too much for her and she'll go running into the kitchen and look at him from the doorway. It is the cutest thing. He is the one she dobie smiles the most for and that is the cutest thing.  She is a doll.

Lady Kate! It is a WE that spoil Alexis but Im (Rena) the only one that post on here! Jim's too busy spoiling Alexis! LOL!  She is never ever w/o one of us! We cater to her every whim! And in return she is the most beutiful loving dog! You can tell when she smiles! And if one of us leaves ...when we come back its like she hasnt seen us in a month! She goes crazy! I buy her toys that I know will be gone in less then 15 minutes! But she has the greatest time in 15 minutes! I use to order on line a bunch of toys all at once and Alexis got so she would go nuts every time the UPS man came by!  We have a famous sandwich shop her - The Kewpee....And when we go to the drive through window - they always give her a bone treat.  So when we go to ANY drive through window - she looks for a treat and gets all excited!  I took her to McDonalds and I thought she was going to have a fit when the lady did not give her a treat!  ANd when we go to the bank ATM- She is totally clueless as to where the Lady is... Let alone where is her treat!!!  Its hilarious! But Mom comes to the rescue and I always bring treats with me! If you dont give her one when you run in to the store or gas station etc.....she Nudges your shoulder and looks at you ~~WHERE IS MY TREAT? I'VE BEEN GOOD!! She is always doing something goofy! When we first got her at 8 weeks old - She definitely lived up to the title TAZMANIAN DEVIL! I never thought I was going to survive the first year! She is 20 months old now. I have videos of her when she was a baby and I cant believe how sweet she looks playing....ummm I dont remember that! LOL! All I remember is the the crazyness and never being able to leave her for 2 seconds that she didnt get into something! But it was all worth it now because she turned out to be a really good dog! A Sweetheart!! Below is a pix when she was about 3 months old. P.S.! tHAT bed behind her....we put her in the utility room and shut the door one night about this age...so we could eat dinner in peace...when we opened up the door - she was sitting in the middle of the SHREDDED BED! Smiling,,,by the way!  lol!  Rena

I'm absolutely LOVING these posts.. thank you all for sharing your 'spoiling stories'... but so far, I don't see ANYTHING out of the ordinary..lol

I remember a day when we had company over.. and there were three people sitting on the sofa.. We were having a heated discussion on.... oh I don't know.. probably chili-flavored chocolate or something like that..

Sofia walked in the room and just stood there looking at all the people.. everyone got up... shifted over a bit to make room for her and didn't miss a beat in the conversation.. It was like a synchronized drill team move..So not only do WE spoil La Diva.. our guests do too.

More stories please....

Sounds like we all do the same types of things for our furbabies. So if this is what people consider spoiling thier babies then add ares to the list. Because we do all of this with him as well. I just didn't consider it as spoiling lol. We do have a bedtime ritual we go through that is a little different. We say Ares it's bed time and he will walk into our room and get in his bed and sit there until we come in and tuck him in with his bear and blanket and give him hugs and kisses good night. He will not lay down to sleep until we do this. If we don't do this he will sit there and whine until one of us tucks him in.

I believe in a dog initially earning perks and rewards, and getting to keep those perks and rewards based on behavior.  Dakota pretty much gets free run of whatever she wants these days.  She earned it, may as welll take advantage!!

Uh-Oh, now all the dober-divas-in-training will have to try on their Mommies pearls!!! Face shots anyone?

I forgot about all of Bellas Bling, her handmade (hand tooled and hand beaded in Kenya)  collars and her Big Lots cheap but Pretty collars and matching leashes, and her specially designed and sewed by Mommie sweaters to wear if it's cold! Not now its hot here, at least it didn't get hot 4 weeks ago:)

What  fun thread to read:)

Oh let me see with all our guys, 8 cats and 2 dogs it would be a daunting list but for the

CATS:

new beds every time we go to petsmart for major supplies (about once a month)

New litter boxes once a year

Regular food but some yummy new canned food that sounds good each food run to the store

new brushes and catnip once a year

New toys whenever something grabs my eye

DOGS:

Pepe - new toy every so often, new halter every 3 months, new leads/leashes once a year, beds beds and more beds, veggie treats every trip to the store, bath once a month to two months.

Ben - Beds really nice sofa style beds; toys toys toys, bones bones bones whenever the mood strikes at the store, new collar every 6 months

Both dogs - get brushed daily with lots of loving words, training with treats that is made into so fun they don't know they are learning :))  car rides in the convertible when it's sunny, a car ride once a day just because but they have to do lots of training/working on the way to the car they must be disciplined in their actions or they don't get to go so if they misbehave on the way to the car they will be corrected verbally and hand signals and if they persist then they stay home, walks around the neighborhood, allowed on the sofa with the proper response to commands, lots of play time.

not sure if its spoiling when they have to work for things but in our household it is

OMG SPOILS!!!!

Skye gets canned food every morning for "breakfast"... The best toys I can afford, a new one every week. Leashes and collars galore(we call them her "pretties") another bag of treats every week. She sleeps wherever she wants and is welcome to all furniture. She gets bits of whatever I may be eating... Within reason. :D She gets her run of the house when I'm at work because I couldn't leave her crated that long when I know that she'll stay out of things. Fun training sessions every day, sometimes two or three times. She gets to play with her bff everyday and)  a 8 mile jog.

Barney(the evil kitty) gets his breakfast and is king of the house. He's got no boundries, whether it's the bathroom, my room, or the top drawer of my dresser (his fave napping spot). A new litter pan every 6 months. A new collar every week, as his tend to dissapear. Loves and cuddles whenever he wants, and NO BATHS... Cuz he hates them. :P

Shippo(the rat) gets breakfast of mini wheats, new chews every week, a big, rollaround vehicle to play in. Cuddles everyday, a clean tank every other day. His "house" is a 20 gallon tank, twice as big as he needs. New fun toys every week as well as a new harness every 6 months.

My babies sleep in my bed (other than the rat) and have no need for pet beds, but have them anyway, just in case they decide to use them.

I don't think you can over-spoil your pet unless you're letting them run around with no training and attributing it to the age-old "it's an animal, I don't have control" excuse. Otherwise, this "spoiling" is just what we use to show them that we love them, as it is sometimes the only way they can understand.

Oh that Stevie Wonder image is burned in my mind!!!!!

Having been to a fantastic Wonder concert back in the day where he had the whole crowd enthralled and holding their lighters up... uh//oh I am dating myself.

B is so spoiled she gets fresh boiled / chopped chicken livers and gizzards. But then she wont eat them, so I have to pick them out of her kibble, and replace them with real fresh boiled chicken legs and thighs only please Mommie!!!! She sure lets me know what is acceptable in her princess mouth:)

I am trying to teachg Bella to dance>> maybe she could get a lesson from Alexis//Wonder Dog!!!

Another thing we both play with her like all the time, she especially likes it when we are down on our hands and knees or otherwise on her level:)

OH, how crazy doth love make you?!!

Since the "old men" pasted on to the rainbow bridge and Dallas  found his forever home, we are down  to just spoling Smore the kitten.  He gets all the love and play a 5 year old boy can give him, as well as kitty  treats, cat toys everywhare and morning naps in the big bed.
