So, I was wondering about this one behavior of my GSD...

Whenever I'd take Zelda out to go play with Cheif, my GSD, he would sometimes snap his jaws--not like a bite, but like when you kinda bite and have your teeth make that hollow sound-- whenever Zelda turns her attention elsewhere, like a person passing by on the trail behind our house. Can anyone explain that?

Cisco "bites" the air all the time. It is never aimed at anyone or thing - but the sound it makes... ewww makes me cringe!

My Sheltie has done the "bite the air" thing ever since she was a puppy.

Is Chief neutered?  Those boy dogs get excited around the little girls.  I've seen it happen when a stud is taken to um, his lady love.

XDDD Thanks guys for your answers :D

No, he isn't neutered, so it makes complete sense that he's trying to get my little girl's attention ;P

All these sound very plausible explanations and then you can add that dogs use their mouths to intake alot of scent so when they find something super interesting with their nose they will open their mouths and if it is really super interesting then they will jaw at the air to suck up as much of that scent as possible. It's like gulping the scent as if it were actually 3D substance and they move fast in order to not lose the scent and that causes the jaws to slap together, horrible noise make you hurt. Just a thought...
