[ Okay, here’s how we play this little writing game.  I set up a scene and am going to add a few names, if you’re not mentioned its not because you can’t play, but because I didn’t want to list all our delightful dogs in one post… !  When you reply or add your little tidbits, come from your dog’s perspective but interact with another dog.  Feel free to add havoc.  I’m a total nerd, of course, but hey it was a fun distraction on the train this morning! ]

Northern California has a two week period every January where the sun seems to tease its residents with hints of spring – the skies go cloud free and the wind is nonexistent.  Since all Steve’s friends in the East have been plagued by snow, snow, and more snow, he decided to take matters into his own paws.  He convinced Miles to hack into their mom’s e-mail and send an invitation to all his friends.  Leo, Fancy, Cisco… Raven, Zelda, Sofia, Buddy… Red, Princess… Skye…Dakota… Ginger… all the Dobermans that frequent that site where his mom talks about him.  Being the smart Dober Devil that he is, Steve dug into his mother’s purse and produced a credit card and promptly pestered Miles until the little dog purchased tickets for all of them to come visit.

Steve could hardly contain his excitement.  They were all coming, to visit HIM! He was more destructive and hyper than normal, leaving his mother threatening him with the squirt bottle and his dad hiding in the closet.  He accidentally broke a window when he thought he heard the first arrival and was embarrassed about it for five seconds before he saw his dad tape it up.  All better!

It took longer than he expected, but the doorbell rang and the first Doberman arrived – Steve wriggled with excitement as the door opened and it was Leo sitting on the doorstep.

AWESOME!  Steve tackled Leo to the ground and then proceeded to tear off to the backyard where he showed Leo all the best places to dig, the best position to bark for no reason (that one really bugged his mom so Steve found himself doing it more and more), where the evil dragons lived in the cement pathway.

The doorbell rang again and with Leo in tow, Steve dashed back into the house, tumbling Miles in the process to find....

Cisco and Raven who had traveled from the good old 'Burgh even though it was SuperBowl weekend (mom and dad were a little relieved they wouldn't have to stay home to watch the game)! They promptly gave good sniffing hello's and Raven was acting a little coy as she had never seen such handsome dobes in person (besides her brudder of course), the boys all ran into the backyard for some random barking at nothing (steve had told Cisco how much his mom hated as does Cisco's mother)... Raven just sat back wiggling in her quiet excitement watching the doberstuds, waiting for some female companionship, when miles came out with another group which included....

Senorita Sofia from sunny Me-hi-co.

She brought balls for the girls, bones for the boys

Goodies for mom's and for dad's lots of toys

She taught Raven, "sit" and Cisco to "stay"

Being a Diva, she was clueless to  play.

Please help me you pups

She said with a sigh

Steve, fetch me a bone

or I'll give you 'the eye'

Oh  no Steve said, I feel like a romp

Come on Fancy, and Zelda and Leo let's stomp

The wall flower sat and indeed she did pout

Til Buddy showed up and nuzzled her snout

Steve's mom gave everyone an excited call. It sounded urgent! Steve reported to his buds, "She always sounds like that!" and he went back to naughing the tree and passing out the pieces.
- Steve's mom's call again, intensified this time and joined in by lots of mom voices. One after another, they abandoned the chew session and happily trotted back to the moms. They were asked to chill for a very special surprise. Everyone sat and listened very intently. Two very special guests had arrived. The moms said that they could only go into Steve's room two at a time. Everyone found partners and paired up to wait their turn. Auntie Sofia sat in an unusually serious and authoritative manner in the hall with the group. Uncle Red and Buddy set the example and walked into Steve's room very calmly. Uncle Red said the door would be left open so everyone could hear the conversations as long as everyone stayed cool.
As the door opened, the pups saw Romeo, Paris and Boo laying on the floor by Steve's bed. And there ever so eager and smiling hugely lay Miracle and Athena!
Miss Des, Romeo's mom, told us each pair could have two minute visits. And the "quiet and easy" (all the moms kept stressing those reminders) nose sniffins began!

Steve showed his gang where the bones hid in the toy chest and instructed each and every one to carefully bring a pile in to visit.

Then when it was time to go, all of them slunk out and the mischief began again.

Steve's mom always got upset when he jumped on the couch and since all the parents were watching The Game (something Cisco had explained as being very important when all the humans jump up and down and yell and throw things at the screen when men in tights play tackle and chase).  So of course he got them all to jump up with him.

First he, then Cisco, then Leo.. Raven sat at the edge looking concerned.

Sofia, of course, could not be bothered and she looked to the sky with a big huff and a disdainful eye.

They were all banished outside during Half Time and instead of hanging out barking at the squirrels on the fence, Steve convinced Miles to show them how to escape.  And off they went, a train of dobermans, trotting down the street... an old lady in her walker stopped in fear!

But...

Suddenly the whole group came to a stop.  Everyone began to sniff the air as a tantilizing scent wafted through the crowd.  "What is that smell?"  Cisco wondered out loud.  Dakota bared her teeth in a huge dober-grin and exclaimed, "I know, I know!  That's the smell of hamburgers...steaks...hot dogs!  Oh glorious hot dogs!  I would recognize that smell anywhere!"  "There must be a BBQ around here somewhere," Steve chimed in.  "This way guys!"  shouted Romeo, and they were off!  A whole train of dobermans, young and old, keen noses following the delicious aroma down the sidewalk, across front yards, around a shrub and finally slithering under a back gate where they found - oh glory be!  An unattended BBQ!  The Steelers had just scored a touchdown with 2 minutes left in the game, and were now 1 point ahead.  In all the commotion the pack of hungry pooches on the back deck went briefly unnoticed.

the sad news that Athena had lost her hard fought battle and had gone on to the Rainbow Bridge.

Steve was the stalwart one that brought the news and was passed one by one along the Doberman train, leaving in it's wake a dirge of sadness and mourning.

How the kids grieved... they all hung their heads and ignored the beloved hot dogs, the special hamburgers and cried their last goodbyes to their beloved cousin who had struggled so hard to live.

It was their first encounter with death and it left them with an anguish and sorrow new to their psyche.

"She was so young", said Princess, "Just a little older than me"

" I loved her truly" honored Cisco who up until now made every girl think that each one of them was his favorite.

" How can this happen?" asked Raven the youngest and most upset, as she just couldn't' understand how someone left the pack so unexpectedly.

" God just wanted her more than we did" spoke Sofia; Wise to the ways of the world.

"She has a job to do up there on the Bridge and we will all see her someday.. Until then. love your life, live your dreams and do the best you can to cherish every moment.

She will be missed."

Aunt Sofia's mom came over to hug all the other parents. She always had an abundance of love and compassion and today it seemed to pour as fast as the tears. She looked down to see the youngest. She lowered herself to pick up the pup, supporting the back paws and held her close to her heart.
"We love you little Raven.". And the face kisses began.
