So I decided to start making paracord collars and leashes to sell to family and friends and possibly at the local jockey lot to raise money for my mom. She lives in England and her husband is terminally ill. When he passes she will come back over here and have literally just what is in their bank account, which isnt much. So this was an idea I had to put all the money in a savings for her. Tell me what yall think, these are my first three attempts. Be honest!!!!!!

at the vet office today:

My third attempt, different knot.

Sorry for so many pics! My little model just looked so pretty in it!

I love them!!  The collars and leashes were good too!! LOL  Chevy looked gorgeous in the pics.  I think you have a natural talent for this, and the inspiration behind starting this is beautiful.  I would love to buy some from you.  As you know that I have a pack of kids at my house!!  Just let me know where I can get them, how much and I am on board for 3 collars and 3 leashes.  They already have some, but these would mean alot more for us.  Send me a message and we can get something worked out.  Good luck with your new business!!  Give Chevy some love from all of us!

Nice!   I hadn't heard of these until recently.  Will you be teaching your mom to make these as well?  She might like a craft to do with her time.  I think the older generation has always been craftier than the new.  It would keep her busy and might be a fun thing to do together.

They are very pretty!  The only thing I see is that the metal O ring is a little too big.  It may be a hazard in that if the collar was loose, a dog could easily get a tooth caught in it.

Thanks everyone. Yall can get them right from me, I can make the slip/choke collar, the swivel latch/o ring closure, or a metal buckle, which I can post a pic of in a little bit. You can pick either of the two knots and two colors from this list:

black

white

neon pink

neon green

neon yellow

neon orange

desert sand tan

burgandy

multi camo

acid purple

neon turquoise

royal blue

imperial red

silver

The pink/black knot gives a little (stretches), and the blue/silver knot doesnt give at all.

I can also make this knot:

In that knot you can choose three colors if you want.

Here is the metal buckle:

Here are examples of the colors:

acid purple:

neon turquoise:

The collars, any way you want them, are $12 and the leashes are $18. That is cheaper than I found them online, most people want 15 for the collars and 25 or 30 for leashes. Then just like $3 for shipping. I have paypal.

Happydance- Thanks for the suggestion! I appreciate any feedback! The rings have to be that size on the choke collar because the collars are so wide they wont slip through anything smaller. I make them just big enough to go over the dog's head, so they arent long enough to get a tooth stuck. The swivel hook/ring closure uses smaller rings though.

yayayayaya, I love these, I would love to have some and leashes. I will check with the rottie rescue and see if they would like to invest in some especially to give out with a dog that gets adopted......it might help to have a paper tag with them to identify who you are and a bit about Chevy and her situation - are you going to call these Chevy collars and leashes :)) will you be using a portion of money to fund research on Chevy's issues?? if so that would help to get them out there and help her at the same time. Just wondering things out loud......what sizes can you make cause right now Ben's neck size if 26"+ can you make large ones like that?? How long are the leashes???

I don't have paypal is there a way to just send you a check via snail mail???

Yeah you can mail a check. I can definitely make ones that big, I just need an exact measurement. I dont know of a fund that is doing research on dog liver issues, but i would be glad to donate a portion if there is one out there! That is a good idea! I actually did call it "Chevy's paracord collars and leashes" and found these cool business cards with a doberman on them! I wish I knew of a way to put something on them like a brand tag, but I dont know how. The leashes are about 4 feet, but really I could make them any length. If your rottie rescue wanted to do that I could work out a deal with them. All of the profit with exception of some that I will donate to a research fund if yall can help me find one, will go towards my mom's savings account since she will come over here with nothing. She wont have a job or anything so she really needs it.

kar-jinx- yeah she is going to help make them when I bring her over here for a visit in jan. She used to do marcame (spelling?) in the 70's and she said it looks a lot like doing that. She will halp make them then and when she moves over here after her husband passes maybe it can be a good income source for her to do on her own.

Wow, these are gorgeous!  Do you have the "modified" choke collars?  I don't know how to describe it except it is a more "gentle" choke collar.  I'll have to see if I can post a picture of Ginger's collar.  We got it at obedience school.

I think I know what you mean, the ones that are attached to only a small section of it that tightens up? Kind of like this?

If that is what you mean, then no. I saw where I could get some chain sections like that and make some, but I dont know if they would be too expensive to make any profit on. I will look into them though!

Yes I remember Macrame' I used to do that myself and recognized some of the knots in what you are doing. It is calming and relaxing to do it too. My husband wondered when he saw them is you were wrapping the actual metal "choke" chain or just using the cording???

I will probably be buying a few in bulk and donating them to Rottweiler Hearts so that they can give a collar and leash with your "bio" tag to new adopters with their new dog :)) I think it would be nice especially since they would be specially made by a dog person.

Can't wait to get a true measurement of Ben's neck and pick my colors!!

cuddlebug00 - yes, those are the ones.  Bummer; you might be pleasantly surprised at how much people will pay for something for their pets. I think most of us here are guilty of that and don't mind whatsoever if it is something we want. Your collars/leashes really are gorgeous - I think you have something here.  Much better quality and much more attractive than anything I've seen in the stores.  Have you thought about featuring your products on Etsy?  It's part of e-bay where people sell home crafted products.

Talisin- It is just the cording, no chain underneath. Believe it or not, the cord is pretty soft. It was softer than I expected.

Gingersmommy- I could always make you a regular collar instead of the choke kind if you want! LOL Or just a leash!

beautiful!  I'm going to have to measure Rocky's neck though as I don't know anymore how big it is.   I wouldn't mind a nice new collar for him.

What is Paracord?  is it washable?  and how well does it hold up to say another dog friend chewing at him while playing?

I could be speaking out of turn here, but I believe it is parachute cord, made of mostly nylon.  Should be washable, but do not dry.  If this is a correct description of paracord then it also should not give or ever slack.  Lori I know that you are outdoors alot, do you ever picket line your Dobe?

What exactly does 'picket line' mean?

Meaning like a horse.  Tie rope from one tree to another, then leash on dog runs freely up and down the rope tied to the trees.  Giving them a confined yet open play area.

I was only thinking of this as I tie my horses this way when we are on a trail ride for the weekend.  I didn't know if this would be good or bad with Shelbi.  If I take her trail riding she must be on leash in camp or I get cited I thought this was an option for her to be on leash, but have more space at her access.

Thought you may know,

Yeah the paracord is parachute cord. It is extremely durable and you can clean it. It is actually pretty soft. It doesnt stretch or anything, the pink/black knot gives a little bit just because of the way it is tied, but the blue/silver one doesnt give at all. I'll be happy to make one for anyone that wants one! Its for a good cause to help my mom out!

Cuddlebug I do want one I just need to remember to measure his neck but his current collar is old and I think a new one is in order :)

Jeri - no we don't picket line Rocky.  I do have a 25' cord that we use at the track and we usually just loop it around the closest Tree/picnic table or part of our truck somewhere.  Gives him room to wander around a bit but keeps him close enough to our little pit area that he can't / doesn't bother anyone unless they come over to visit.

Cuddlbug - how wide are the collars?  I like the last 2 pics best because they are a little wider just wondering what the size difference is?

The pink/black knot is 3/4" wide

the blue/silver knot is right at 1"

The blue/purple knot is 1 1/4"

I have never washed the ones that I have and was looking up some stuff on them and I guess it does draw up some when it gets wet if you then put it in the dryer. I would suggest just washing it with a wet rag or something, or just not putting them in the dryer after washing it.

Does the blue and purple have the metal buckle for a closure???  I will have to measure Shelbi, but I will want one.

Yeah, I dont use any plastic pieces. It will be a metal side release buckle or a swivel hook/ring closure like is on the blue/silver one. It is your choice

Do you pre wash the cord to shrink it?  I googled around & they suggest if making your own that you pre wash & dry the paracord to shrink it.

( If it's not pre shrunk, then I'd like to order a size to fit my waist & hips so I can jump in the pool, lay in the sun, & watch my waist line  & behind shrink!  Just kidding )

I want to be sure Daymian is finished growing before I order.  I'll want one that goes with his coat color, maybe a dark brown & orange.  Or do you have a suggestion that would look great on a red doberman.  He's a lovely chocalate brown & rust.  I'm not a great coordinator of color.

Kar-jinx I am an artist so I will throw my 2 cents worth in on the color, I think the "neon orange camo" would be a great choice for a deep red doberman.......if you want the collar to really really stand out then choose opposite colors instead of complimentary.......like the blues, blacks and greys.......I just always like the look of complimentary, it gives a regal look....... red is a warm color and that means picking colors that are warm in base color (oranges, yellows) burgandy is a purple base which is created by mixing blue and red and blue will be dominant making burgandy a cool red not a warm red. Anyway, your dog's color is warm so choose warm colors.......unless you love contrast...if you want a mix of colors post again and I will see if I can give you some suggestions there too.....

Oh another idea would be to copy/paste the color chart that cuddlbug posted in this thread and print it out and then cut the colors out that you are interested in and find a picture of your dog and lay the cut out colors on your dogs neck on the photo and see what you think.....

tal,

What do you think about the acid purple and the neon turquoise together on Shelbi????

Jeri

With a red dog I would suggest not using the cool of the turquoise if you want something that will blend and compliment your dogs coat. How about the Acid Purple and Neon Orange??? both those colors use red to create them that would be complimentary - if I was going to go all opposite of red then I would use the cool of the Neon Turquoise with the Neon Green or Electric Blue. The idea here is to use both colors in the same base you either match the dog or go totally opposite - the dog is red - use both colors that can be made from red OR use both colors that have absolutely no red in them - using one color with red in it and one without will be conflicting.  what do you think of the adjustment??? Which color do you like the best?? if it's the purple then I would use the neon orange but if you really like the turquoise then I would choose the neon green or electric blue.

Jerial - Well duh, hahhahahahaha ok then your choice would a very striking one!!! as would the ones I mentioned thinking your dog was also red. Geeesh.......Blacks can pull off just about any color whereas the reds take a bit more thought. Black is like a blank canvas and anything works,:)) of course the more intense the color the more vibrant the dog will look too......

The first model is stunning! (and honoring her name with the collars and leashes is perfect) what great photos! That's why we need more models of anyone who has gotten one. I think that it gives a good perspective of the colors and size of what it will look like on each dog.   Especially on Ginger because of her white fur "accent" color.  lol

@jerial13, Go for the turquoise and purple!! Love those colors!

I need to know how to measure the neck and how much extra inches do you put in for wiggle room. Ember is 11 months now, don't know if her neck will still grow, and considering these collars are not adjustable, I would have to be pretty much to close measurements.

She looks really red in the avatar, but it was sunny and the bluebonnets made a higher red contrast.  She is a chocolate red.  So:

@Talison:  I was thinking, burgundy and silver. Using the second collar type which is 1", I think, what would look better, the maroon in the inside and trimmed with silver?  Or silver with maroon trim.  I didn't know which way to go.  To make the silver two outside borders, or one solid inside border.
I picked silver to give Ember just a little "bling" look.   Something shiny without being too diva.  Most of all her accessories, bed etc..are burgundy\maroon and purple.   She has a brown collar now as I tend to like things to blend in with her neck.   Since she is gowning into a lady now, its time for some color.  (its like when a little girl can start wearing some little heels with her dresses)

And as these collars and leashes are customized items.  This is a good price!  There are way too many plain, cheap collars at the Pet stores that cost more, and there are limited choices.  Have you ever been to a dog show, or expo with all the booths with all the dog accessories for sale.  They cost alot more there because they are special order, and most items have allot more color choices.

@kar-jinx,  just looked at Daymian's photos....handsome guy!  -Ember is batting her eyes!

Please do tell where to measure for the collar.  I tried to measure Shelbi over the weekend, and I have a much different measurement from the base of her neck than the measurement up higher on her neck.  I also want ot make sure that it fits as it is not adjustable.

Thank you

Sorry, my internet has been down for a couple days LOL.

Jeri- just measure the place on her neck where you would like the collar to sit. I know some people like their collars to sit up high on the neck, while others like it a little lower

Sandee- You can just give me the measurement on how you want it to fit. I know some people like to fit their collars a little more snuggly than others and like I mentioned to Jeri, some like them to sit on different areas of the neck

I appreciate all the interest and so does my mom! LOL

You really have no idea how often I refer to the dogs here on this forum as if they are family to people I am talking to and they ask me how many dogs I have and I say two and then I realize they think ALL these dogs are mine, :))

I have told Chevy's story so many times to people, and the other dober dogs here, Ziva with the little people on her head she makes a hit everytime someone is visiting and I have the computer up and running I always show them that picture and Chevy with her collar modeling, and Ruger, Kaiser, Jerial, DJ's Dad, Antonio, Gunslinger, Fitzmar, Rnddobermans, kate, missdoglover, kim, and on and on I show all the pupper pics to anyone that will look......so these are my extended dog family.....

I remember a story about my grandmother - seems that she loved soap operas back in the 60's and every time my grandfather came home from work he would sit for an hour or so and listen to my grandmother talk about her day and the people she visited and such, but it took him a long time to figure out that the people who had such sorted details and weird stuff going on were actually on the soap operas, hahahahahaa, he thought THOSE were the people she was visiting. hahahahaha so it reminds me of the dogs here, I get so wrapped up in their stories that I talk about them as if they were mine, hahahhahaah

Just surfing around the web and found these paracord collars on a site called Etsy.  Thought it would inspire Cuddlebug, and show others colour combinations as well as prices.  I still haven't decided on colour for Daymian yet.  I want the neon green that will compliment his chocolate brown coat, but can't decide on the second colour.  I also love the bright blue on his chocolate coloured hide.  Now you all know I am Canadian too by the way I spell "colour"

Cuddlebug, have you considered the cost to ship to Canada?

Any way, there are pages of paracord collars here for colour examples.
