Hi Guys,

I have been going back and forth about posting this, mostly because every time I start writing this I burst into tears, but here goes...

Kevin and I have been fostering an elderly Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Poppy. She does not walk very well and has a grade 4 heart murmer.

Last Saturday, I left Harley and Poppy in my yard while the cleaning lady was cleaning up our house.  I do this because she is scared of dogs and I don't want them in her way while she is cleaning.  I usually never leave them outside, except for the two hours she is there.  Anyway, I gathered up Ellie and took her to a Nosework class.  When I returned home Harley was in the yard with all the doors and gates closed, but Poppy was gone.  She is not able to jump the fence so I don't know how she got out.

I have walked and re-walked that yard, gone under the house, into the attic, posted flyers, knocked on all the neighbor's doors, etc.  I even hired a pet detective.  We are just traumatized and devastated over this.  I can't make it longer than hour without bursting into tears.  I cared so much for this little dog.  I groomed her and cuddled with her every night.  She was just starting to trust us.

What you guys can do to help me is to please spread the word that there is a missing Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in the San Francisco East Bay Area.  I made a facebook page for this so if you could please share it and spread the word... even if you do not live in California or even in the USA... you may have friends or family that do.  The more people looking for her the better.

Thanks everyone....

Lil, it seems that your cleaning lady might have been the last one to see Poppy.. What did she say? I am so so sad for you. I know how much love you her. Jess is up in that area and she will post at her vet's office.. Hangg in there and try to keep positive thoughts.. much love and many prayers

There is a communication gap with my cleaning lady.  She say that she opened up the back door to the yard to put some laundry into the laundry room, BUT she put a bucket up to keep Harley away and from coming inside the house.  She then had the front door wide open to clean the cobwebs on the front porch.  So there is a possibility that Poppy walked out the front door, but it seems highly unlikely that a dog like Poppy would get inside and then out if Harley couldn't (young and energetic).

I have also been bouncing around the idea that maybe a coyote or large bird got her?  But wouldn't I see evidence of a coyote in the yard?  And can a bird pick up a 20 lbs dog?

I tried to call the Alameda Sheriff's office, because it seems with no means of escape that Poppy was stolen (although who would go into our backyard with Harley there?).  They said with out proof of theft they cannot write a police report.

There are so many questions and I look into Harley's golden eyes begging for him to tell me what happened.

Oh my gosh. I cannot imagine how she got away. I doubt that a coyote or even a bob cat would come in the yard with Harley there. It just doesn't make any sense..

Now the hard question:

Do you completely trust your cleaning lady? Could she have had one of her relatives or friends come and get Poppy to sell?? ( I'm sorry if this is rude and if you love your cleaning lady the way I love my Lupita.. but.. have to ask)

I know.  And the rescue organization is pushing me to pursue that avenue.  I don't blame them, it was there dog.

The housekeeper called 6-7 times after I called her about Poppy and she came into my office to talk to me about it.  She told me she felt really bad.  I don't really think she had anything to do with it, but since Poppy was not my dog I will have to do what the rescue wants.

I know he's still a baby ( well sort of) but is Harley protective of his property? What I'm saying; is it possible for someone to have come in the back yard and taken Poppy? As in, hand Harley a treat and make friends with him. Scoop Poppers up and haul.. I don't know the layout of your house and what proximity it is to the street and if your cleaning lady might be unaware.. ( like having the vacuum on and not hearing anything.) the people could have been watching your house for a while.

Oh, Lilian -

I don't have any suggestions, and live so far away. But I'm sending up prayers for you, Poppy, Harley and everyone right NOW.

I wish I had words for you other than I'm so sorry. I am praying that she is returned, I feel as though someone may have walked by and stolen her.  I will post on my facebook page too.

So sorry for your situation ... it is awful and I would certainly investigate it further. It doesn't sound right at all. Good luck and my thoughts are with you and Poppy...

Oh my lord this is terrible. Poor Poppy she must be terrified. I feel that the cleaning lady has something to do with this; just doesn't seem right......I hope you find her safe and sound and just exploring or something close by.....sending prayers her and your way Harley knows, have you thought about letting harley sniff something of poppy's and telling him to go "find" her and leash him and see where he goes??? who knows maybe he can following a scent even for the firt time since they were friends he might want to find his buddy as badly as you.....keep us posted.

Tali, my husband was on it with Harley.  Within an hour he was out there with Harley looking for her.  The next day, I hired a pet detective (scent tracking dog), but I could only afford her 4 hour minimun at 65 dollars an hour. No luck.

It is hard to answer whether or not Harley would let someone in our yard.  When he sees someone outside the the house he does his thunderous bark and growl.  But once they come inside he is all wiggles and love.  He looks more intimidating than he is.  I had a neighbor tell me that he wouldn't let her inside the yard, but I think she is just plain scared of Harley and it has nothing to do with his behavior.

Thank you everyone for reading and sharing.  I added more posters around the neighborhood and have flyers in every single vet in 4 different cities in the area. The neighbors are starting to call me with suggestions and I listen and act on every one.

Is she microchipped?? Do you know anyone in the area that has cavalier's that they breed?? could you go to their places of operation and see if by chance she ended up at one of those places??? Let them know you are looking for a cavalier etc. just thinking out loud.....

I have this thread on
" You are watching this post" so all replies are coming directly to my e-mail.

I will continue to check but Lil.. honestly, it sounds uber suspicious to me. I am thinking someone took Poppy. I am just praying they will have second thoughts and return her.

Have you thought of checking Craig's list.??. sometimes people who pup-nap are looking for a quick buck.

I hope you don't mind, I cut and pasted this thread to the group I started on FB.. your original post kinda got buried under all the political stuff and musings of the regular NewsFeed on FaceBook. Why not repost it when you have a chance.. things do get buried..

Lilian~

This is the first place I checked when I got up this morning, hoping for some ( any) news on Poppy.

So disappointed that there is none. Please know that we are sending prayers and good thoughts your way.

Thank you so much.  No there has been no news since we lost her.  No sightings.  No phone calls.  Nothing.

She is not micro-chipped.  I did everything I was supposed to with her and brought her into the vet for a general exam and all her follow up testing.  It is not a requirement in California (only in Texas) for the shelters and rescues to microchip, but after this whole incident the rescue is looking into making it a standard procedure for all fosters to be microchipped by the rescue.  The rescue does pay for microchipping, but usually while the dog is under anestesia for something else (spay/neutering, teeth cleaning, etc), none of which Poppy required.

I check craigslist every half hour sometimes more.  I have posted her ad and re-posted.  The only thing I have not done is a Pet Amber Alert which is 60 dollars to make phone calls to all the neighbors.  I spent all my money on the pet detective ($260) and am waiting till Friday when Kevin gets paid (my paycheck goes towards to the mortgage).  Then I will probably do the pet amber alert.

I am going back and forth on the house-keeper.   I do not know what is right or wrong.  This has been a horrible week.

since nothing has surfaced this really sounds suspicious to the cleaning person......have you checked with any rescues or "breeders" in the area if they have a new dog??? you just never know.....

Good luck and don't give up hope....

Have you tried posting an ad like this one:

Have male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, looking to breed with female, would gladly take pick of litter for stud services.  Would consider purchase of female for breeding, but must see female before price negotiation.

Let's just call it a bait and switch.  You could post the ad both in the item wanted and item for sale catagories.  This may be an acceptable time to purchase a pre-paid phone for the ad, so no one that knows you would recognize the phone number.

Just my thoughts.

Jeri.. you'd make a good C.I.A. agent.. this is BRILL!! Although the fact that Poppy is um.. mature.. would it work in this case?

My thoughts were "if" they acquired her by wrong doing then they wouldn't care as long as they could make a quick buck.

Like I said "Just a thought"

Poppy looks like she has an eye injury.  Hope everything is going well.  I wonder if the mystery of how the dog escaped has been solved.

The mystery of how she got lost has not been solved.  A good samaritan called this morning and said she had our dog in her front yard.  My husband answered the phone and didn't tell me.  All he said was,"I'll be right back!"  He later told me that he didn't want to stress me out, if it wasn't her (as you can imagine I have been a total wreck during the week).

He walked into the room holding Poppy and I couldn't believe me eyes.  I immediately whisked them both into the car and drove straight to the ER vet.  They hooked her up to some fluids and started working on her eyes.  They thought there was a fox tail in there, but it turned out to be dirt, leaves, and debris.  They have sent us home with antibiotics, eye drops, and a cone.  We are feeding her a little bit at a time.

I am so happy she is home and safe.  I am so happy some one saw my flyers.  I am so happy for all the prayers people have been saying.  Thank you everyone!

YAYAYYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA!!!!!!!!!!

Oh wow, so good to see her picture, even though she is a little worn from the adventure she looks GREAT cause she is home and safe!!!!! Oh my lord I have been so worried about her.....Thank you for letting us know she is home. keep us updated on how she progresses with her recovery from this.....

Ben says to tell her that if she plans to get lost in the future to make sure it's in her own yard, that's how he does it, and it still works great in terrorizing the parents, but always stay home........

I would watch her very carefully in the yard.  She may point out the breech in security for you.  Our min pin found a small area in our fence where squirrels and rabbits squeeze through under the chain link which needed tightening up.  If the min pin belly crawled, he might have made it into the nighbor's yard.  And our neighbor's cock a poo figured out how to climb pat way up a lilac bush, then jump the remainder of their fence.  They had to trim the branches a bit to remedy their escaper.  Their dog didn't go far, but didn't have a way back in, and would stand on the other side & howl. I would think if she was on the other side very long, she would wander away though.

Glad you have Poppy back!  Take an extra nap to get back some of your lost sleep!  You probably need it.  Crazy how attached we get to our animals.  I think we worry more about them than children.
