As some of you know I've been training for a triathlon for the past 6 months or so.  It is now only 3.5 weeks away! (august 6)  I signed up a while back for some private swimming lessons to improve my form...I had my first one tonight, and it went, well, swimmingly!  (hah hah)  My instructor has competed in a number of iron man and half iron man tri's and gave me a LOT of good tips.  Now that my race is actually coming up I'm just getting so excited...and a bit nervous!  First one guys...first of many??  We shall see, but if it goes well, that could be the case!  We'll make an athlete out of me yet!

There will probably be a few pictures - I'm doing it with my best friend, who is flying in from Alberta just for the race.  Our husbands agreed to be our transition helpers - have our bikes ready after the swim and take them from us before the run so we don't have to waste time in transition - I'll make sure they both have cameras!

Swim practice was GREAT.  I've been swimming weekly on my own, and the distance never bothered me or the fact that it's in open water, because I used to live on a lake and swam across it every day in the summer.  BUT I haven't done the real front crawl since my last swimming lessons...when I was a wee lass of 10 or 11...!  it took a while to get comfortable with the breathing again but it was great to have a 1 on 1 lesson so she could tell me what I was doing wrong and give me some practice drills to improve my stroke.  A half hour lesson ended up being closer to an hour, but she said I showed some real improvement by the end which was super encouraging.  I have 2 more lessons with her over the next two weeks :D

Jess you should totally do one!  Make it your goal or something for after the baby.  Are you planning to keep running during pregnancy?  I've actually read that doing so is really good for you and the baby, it can reduce cravings, mood swings, discomfort, and can help you have an easier time in labour.  And your cardiovascular capacity will be much higher than you'd expect after you give birth, because your use of oxygen is much higher and your breathing efficiency improves as your pregnancy progresses.  Many women have run their fastest marathons in the 6 months after giving birth.

This is all me and my nerdy reading of course, no personal experience :)  But it's worth considering don't you think?

I am excited for you Sweetpea!!! I can't wait till I can get out there and do my first race after the surgery. Have fun and don't worry about winning... that may be the point... but the fun is the real reason we all compete.

Glad to hear your swimming lessons are going well, keep workin hard and keep us informed!!

Best of luck to you!! I'm married to a marathoner who has "triathlon" on his bucket list.  I'm a walker with none of the above on my bucket list, so I stand in awe of those that do it!

Can't wait to hear all about it. Get a good picture with that finisher's medal!!

Sweetpea.. So So proud of you... I know how difficult this can be, my daughter Tracy coaches women for Triathlons in Austin Tx and swimming is her hardest event..  she sinks like a rock...  (no  body fat...) HOW did I spawn something so outrageous??? But I digress.

Keep us updated on your training.. this is HUGE!!!

LK, if not having body fat makes you a fantastic swimmer, I need to get into competitions!! I'd float so much that it'd be a breeze to propel myself to a finish line!  LOL

I haven't been running, no, it takes a lot just to walk lately! I'm ready for the second trimester where they say you feel human again.

This is a great thing to do with a best friend!

Rock that stroke because doing it well gets you farther with less effort :)

Thanks for all the support guys!  I'm not sure yet if it'll be a piece of cake, or if I'll get out there and go ohmygosh...WHAT in the HELL did I sign up for!?  As long as I don't come in last I'll be happy :)

Ahh.  This pregnancy stuff is all greek to me, Jess!  Hopefully you won't be feeling crappy for long.  Has Steve noticed anything wonky about you lately?  I wonder how quickly he'll pick up on the fact that mama is "different..."  My instructor said to work on swimming efficiently, rather than fast, because it'll help me save my energy for the long haul afterward.  At this point I don't have enough time to build up the upper body strength that'll help me really improve my speed!

Ladies it's true, body fat helps you float!  Men generally have a much harder time floating than we gals do...I'm sure the two built in flotation devices  on my chest are to thank for that!  ;)

OMG.. you had me cracking up at your "floatation" devices.. hahahaha.  I swam for speed, so I forget about the endurance aspect!  Being tall always helps, notice how all the olympic swimmers are SUPER tall?  That length means less effort to reach the wall on the other side.  My sister in law went to the Olympic trials for the last summer ones and was one cut short of making it, and mostly it was from her being too short.

Oh wow, good for her!  Bummer that she didn't make it, but still that's pretty great that she got to go to the trials.  Are you tall?  I'm a little squirt, 5'4."

Im 5'4 and was a comp swimmer for years- I always blamed my height for not being able to get my times better.

My Aunt is 4'9 and My Uncle is probably 6'2ish - Years ago for halloween they went as Chewbacca and one of those sand people with the glowing eyes for Halloween- it was soooo funny!

Long ago, back in the dinosaur years, living in rural Missouri we didn't have swimming competitions.  However, I did teach swimming every summer during high school & always wondered why I would win over stronger swimmers during the spring's certification week...    I guess being 5'12" helps

Good luck to you!  A triatholon is a hugh accomplishment.  I'm sure you will do wonderfully.....I heard from a couple friends that do the Sprint Triatholon (shorter) that the hardest part of the swim is getting started.  You're surrounded by kicking flailing people EVERYWHERE and it's not only hard to break away from the crowd but it can be a bit intimidating and claustriphobic if you aren't expecting it.   Once you get going it's all good but both friends said they HATE the begining....

Keep us updated!

Lol Mandy, Love the chewbacca story!  I dated a guy in highschool who was 6'4...His whole family was over 6 feet, even his mom and sisters.  I felt like a dwarf when I was hanging out with all of them!  Dabbles I've always been jealous of tall women!

Lori the sprint distance is what I'm doing as well...I'm also worried about the start, I get claustrophobic.  My instructor said to just bring my head up if I start to get nervous and do the breast stroke for a few minutes, calm...then go back into the crawl.  AH!  Here's to hoping I don't get kicked in the teeth!

It's going great, thanks for asking :)  6 days to go!  This week I will be taking it pretty easy training wise and getting lots of sleep, they say it's important to rest up before a big race.  I will make sure Ray takes lots of pictures!

I know you might have posted a thread somewhere else, but I've been on vacation and haven't caught up.  Just wondering how the race went...I thought of you while I was at the beach, watching all those people running every morning!
