Sofia has been really sick.
Each morning between three and four, she's been waking us up asking to go out, eating grass and horking it up with nothing but bile to show for her efforts.. Called her vet and he suggested a bland diet of cottage cheese and rice.. still no improvment. took her in for two injections of Baytril and crema. She slept last night thru-out the night, but was refusing any fluids.. I tried, broth, pedialyte, plain water and ice chips.. nada. Took her back to the vets today for a five hour procedure of an IV drip of fluids and blood work. Her liver enzymes are off the chart! Will start her on Royal Canin Hepetic on Tuesday ( when it comes in.. sigh.. this IS Mexico) and she has a week's worth of antibiotics to take.. more blood work after a week to see if her numbers change.
Please Forum Family put our girl in your prayers. Our vet doesn't know what's causing it.. we went through the obvious; poisen, too many meds. ( the only thing she takes is thyroid 2x a day) it could be bacterial, a virus or the worst case scenario, a tumor, which unfortunately can be common with Dobermans.. Not knowing her health history, it's difficult to pin point the culprit.. so we're going to try the Royal Canin and see if it helps her numbers.
Thank you all.. Our FaceBook Family has been an invaluble source of support and I want you all to know how much I appreciate the phone calls and the out pouring of love that you've shown this special girl.
She's sleeping now after her long day..

I cannot tell you how touch we are from this wonderful outpouring of love and support for La Diva.

She seems quite a bit better today.. slept the entire night and into the morning.. had to roust her out of bed to go potty and eat breakfast..she was more than ready to go for a short walk this morning and is back in bed. Stiil refusing liquids. am boiling a chicken to make some broth so I can tempt  her with the 'jewsih penicillin.. LOL.

She's a little lethargic, but it's foggy outside and she usually snoozes a little this time of day, so I'm trying not to be too "oh poor baby" etc.Her gums are dry and tacky, so I know she's still a little dehydrated.. might have to do some sub-Q later today or take her back in tomorrow for another IV..I did find out they sprayed the golf course with something a couple of weeks ago.. will check with the gardeners tomorrow to find out what they used ( hey THEY were wearing masks) she might have ingested something toxic from the weed-killer and that might be the culprit.. Mike runs her on the golf cart path on the bike.. so am hoping it's an easy fix.. livers do heal themselves.. so let's keep our fingers crossed and find somewhere else to run her.

Will update when I have more..

Once again, thank you, everyone for the support and especiallly the prayers

She's almost back to her sassy self, although I think I've created a monster with the chicken broth.. now she will not touch plain water unless it's topped with the broth ( I sneak a little of the electrolytes in there while she's not looking..)

Found out what they're using on the golf course.. it's really nasty stuff..Foscoro de Alumino for the gophers ( poison) and  Lorsban for the worms on the greens..  (it's been banned in the united states.)Highly toxic and affects the autoimmune system..

I remember a while back I started a thread on dead bees and how I would find a dead one in our courtyard almost every day, being eaten  by ants.. and then the ants would die.

Lorsban is particularly harmful to bees and fish.

I'm wondering if after Sofia comes in from a run on the golf course or even the cart path, and she washes her feet ( well.. of course she washes her feet, the Diva would never jump up on the sofa with dirty feet)  if she's ingesting some of the toxins..

Started her on Baytril for three days.. I know the antibiotics will make her feel better..will start the Royal Canin Hepetic Wednesday and get another lab report in ten days..

In a way I am kind of hoping it is the problem with the golf course.. that's an easy fix, keep  her off it... but why would it be affecting her liver??? If anyone has any m ore light to shed on this problem. please let me know

Much love to all of you!

I am so happy to hear she is doing better!

Why would they want to kill bees?  Bees are wonderful pollinators.  In fact, there is an epidemic of bees suddenly dying and we have to ship them into California to pollinate the almonds (probably is what is causing them to die... bringin in new diseases, etc, etc.).  The second I move out the city I am going to own bees.  I plan on making my own beeswax soap for Christmas presents this year, but I am going to have to buy the beeswax until I get a hive of my own.

On behalf of Sophia and the bees, I think they should stop using that toxin.

Yes, HarleyBear, it's illegal to kill any pollinating bee down here, they all just went away for some reason.  I'm in the San Joaquin Valley so you can imagine how crucial they are to the crops.  There was even a big theft of someone's bee hives, it was all over the news.  That's why I'm thinking that they've outlawed that particular toxin now.  Let's hope!

Lilian, they didn't purposely kill the bees... the gardeners sprayed the Lorsban on the greens on the golf course to get rid of the worms that were infesting the lawn.. the bees sampled the flowers that were infected by the Lorsban and it poisoned them. The ants were trying to clean up the bee bodies by eating them and then they were poisoned.. it's horrid..

Our vet doesn't think it has much to do with Sofia's liver issues, he thinks she would have shown the typical signs of poison ( drooling, foaming, tearing up) but time and blood work will tell if we caught things in time

Just a note to anyone who's reading this..

watch your kids.. watch them like hawks.. go over every inch of them when they come in from outside whether they take a run with you or just roamed around the back yard.. Look in their ears, wipe their eyes, brush their coats, run your hands all over them feeling for anyting out of the ordinary, ticks, fox tails, scrapes. etc. check the pads of their feet for pebbles or sand that can irritate. Notice their habits, i.e. bathroom, eating, drinking and sleeping, if they stray from the norm, note it and keep track.. Catching different behaviour or symptoms is one of the keys to keeping them healthy.

Glad to hear that Sofia is feeling better, and that is GREAT advice you listed above, Kate.  Catching something early on is so much better than ingoring it till it gets to the point that it is harder--or perhaps impossible--to treat.  Thanks for the great reminder.  Glad that you are taking such excellent care of your Diva.

Mary, that is so kind and thoughtful of you!! With all this love and good will, she can't help but get better Started her on her new kibble ( Royal Canin Hepatica) yesterday...She LOVED it.. scarfed up every single morsel and again this morning.. Sofia has always been a picky eater, not now.... keep fingers crossed that the veternarian diet does what we'll all hoping for.. lower those liver enzyme counts and get her back to perfect.

Right now she's off for her walk.. we're not running her, not til she's finished with this course of antibiotics ( today was the last of the Baytril) but circulation, fresh air and time with her Dad outside is her favorite thing in the world!

OH, poor Sofia!  I'm so glad to read she's doing better. It's a horrible feeling when you can't help them.  I'm actually surprised the Vet doesn't think the poison's on the golf course wouldn't effect her liver?  In a human your liver is what removes toxin's from your blood, so anything she ingested whether orally or through her skin would be removed via her liver too....I'm certainly no Dr though.

I just hope she gets back to her old self and soon !  I'll give Rocky and extra big kiss on his unicorn horn tonight and think of her....I hope you're doing alright too. I'm sure you've been stressed out like crazy over this.

Thank you so much for thinking of us and asking about her very Royal Highness

Sofia looks really good and seems to feel so much better. Drinking a LOT of water ( symptoms) but her eyes don't seem as jaundice as before and her energy level is wonderful..

Really won't know what the enzyme count is til after we get some blood drawn on Thursday.. and the results are back.. we're leaving Mexico on Saturday the 7th ( actually going to meet Jess and Eli in San Diego) taking our girl with us of course.. so it might be as late as Monday before we know if the copper inhibitor in her new kibble is working..

But I will be sure and let you know as soon as I do

Please keep praying.. and thank you all again for everything.

P.S. Trying to post a picture of her...but photobucket is not working.. she's on faceBook though LOL

good to hear and I hope you enjoy your vacation and time with Jess & Eli!  you guys have fun!

Google CAH for information on liver disease in Dobermans - I'm hoping that she is only reacting to poison..... but you should know more about liver disease in Dobermans in case it isn't.  Hugs to Sofia.

Thank you Mary, I have Googled everything I can find re: Liver disease in Dobermans.. I know it's prevalent, and at first not knowing her health history made it even more scary, but it doesn't matter what her parents had or didn't have, we have her now and we will do whatever it takes to be sure she's as healthy as we can get her. Appreciate the hugs.. and hugs right back to you and yours. wish you could send Velma over for a little TLC.. LOL.. she's so wonderful!!
