OMG guys!! This was amazing.,. For the FIRST time ( in over two years) Sofia played!!
I was working on deadline and typing away when she came over to my desk with her beloved hedgehog in her mouth. Dropped it in my hand. I looked at her, looked at it and said "Do you want to play" (knowing the answer would be an eye roll a 'huumph' and she'd throw herself down on the rug by my feet.
So I tossed it... she ran and picked it up and brought it back..
SHE BROUGHT IT BACK!!!
I tossed it again and guess what.. ??
she brought it back... AGAIN.
"MIKE" I screeched ( somewhat like a banshee I must admit) "SHE'S PLAYING!!!"
He came in from whatever he was doing and they continued to play fetch and toss and catch for almost fifteen mins.. I'm attaching a picture, albiet not very good as I don't have a stop action on my camera.. but you'd think we were parents of a baby with her first step.
I know this probably doesn't sound like a big deal to all you owners of Dragon-Slayers, Wild Childs (its a word) or even the normal playful Doberman, but the Diva has never ever, not even ONCE played...
YAY DIVA!!

HOW COOL!!!!  I have a little 7 lb rescue male rattie that came from a kill shelter, and the day we went to get him, he was literally on 'Death Row'...he was scheduled to be put down that afternoon, simply because he had been there way too long and nobody wanted him.  Anyhow, when we brought him home, we were buying him new toys, etc, but he would just look at them like he had NO IDEA what he was supposed to do with something that he couldnt eat.  Toy?  A totally new word to him.  He would just shake in his skin when the other dogs would play and chase each other---scared that one of them might turn on him and attack him, I'm guessing.  He literally did not know how to play.  I remember the first time he picked up a little stuffed duckie with a squeaker in it and tossed it into the air, then went over to it and bit it a few times to make a squeaky noise.  OMG---Barb and I both nearly went nuts and laughed and cried and said "our little guy knows how to PLAY!"   It was about 6 months after he came to us.

I share in your joy, Kate, I really do.  Sofia was just biding her time until she felt the urge to do this strange dance called "play".

Congrats to you all.

***Fabulous picture, BTW---I can see the excitement on both their faces!  LOL

Paul, I remember when you got your new little guy.. it was when you went to the Rattie Rally wasn't it.

Little did you know that you'd be rescued too..

They are such unique characters. Besides just a whole lot of understanding ( even though we don't KNOW what they've been through) they take a bunch of gentle patience to come around and be comfortable with us.

It's so funny coz yesterday Sofia seemed to have hurt her left shoulder and I've had her on Rimadyl. She was dx'ed with a bit of arthritis last year, but seemed to be fine after a couple of weeks of treatment.. I'm wondering now if she has just been aching all this time and not up to leaping around like a lunatic after a year old moth eaten hedge hog..

Thanks for the support everyone.. you've been on this journey with us for a long time..we are thrilled.

What a girl!!  I'm so pleased for you guys!  I know how much she is cherished...this is so special.

I wonder sometimes about the not feeling well thing.  Our GSD went for who knows how long before he started limping from hip problems.  I felt so terrible.  Just didn't realize he felt bad.  Thought it was just a calming down from the puppy years.  Maybe it was some of both.

Anyway, I'm so glad she's feelin' great and PLAYING!!!!

Chris. I know what you mean.. they are so dang stoic.. my neighbor used to be an ER vet tech and has all kinds of stories on the bravery and courageous attitudes that dogs and especially Dobermans portrayed.. we can only do our best with them and be happy we have them in our lives no matter how short a time it is.. We are blessed with these wonderful creatures and WE are the lucky ones!

Funny how the little things mean so much.. The look on her face and the expression in her eyes tell it all.

Sofia has always seemed happy..affectionate and dear.. so very very dear ( well except when she's being a Diva, then she's hilarious..) and I should not have worried so much that she just didn't play.. but there seemed to be something missing. I hope this is a start of something she enjoys doing for her and not just trying to please us.. the doting, obnoxious, paranoid, overprotective, and hopelessly in love parents.

YAYYYYY!!!  :D  I have tears in my eyes too, WOW what a breakthrough!  It is definitely, DEFINITELY the little things that matter the most.

All the wondering about her past, coaxing her to trust her, taking baby steps to teach her to be a part of your family, agonizing over her - in this moment, all worth it.

You and Mike done good, Katie :)

Fantastic news. She has finally completed her transition. I'm sure that where ever she was before, play was not part of life, maybe not even as a puppy. It's funny how their play rewards us as well as them.
