Doberteen Moment

It's finally happened, I have experianced my first Doberteen moment.  Harley has been surprisingly good.  Play biting stopped after the first month, he is walking with a flat collar and 6' leash, no counter surfing, no destructive behavior.  Our only issue is teaching him to be gentle around Ellie. No problems with nipping, guarding, growling.  I was thinking, Wow either we got lucky here or all our time and work is paying off.

I spoke too soon.

Yesterday after our evening walk/play/train session he wanted someone to continue playing with him and his blue bone.  Well, I wanted to sit on the couch and read.  He barked at me  (never done that before) and pawed at my face!  It hurt!  Felt like I was being punched in the face.  I turned to my husband who looked shocked and asked, "Is my nose bleeding?"  It wasn't. So I told Harley NO! and put him in time-out.  CRAZY!  I am sitting here still reeling from the situation because it was totally out of character for him.  He knows that I initiate play, not him.  What was he thinking?

Aw, testing the boundries, I would think.  I think they all do it now and then.  I know Boomer does things he knows he's not supposed to just to see if he can get away with it.  Sounds like you did the right thing showing him you won't stand for that behavior.

Although I have been reading about doberteens in these forums, for some reason it totally surprised me!  I think we need to up the exercise a little.  It been getting hard to stay out late with it getting dark so soon.  I wish our gyms would allow dobermans to run on their treadmills!  LOL.... that will be the day!

oh they are famous for the 'paw' stuff -  Rocky grabs stuff with his paw, he'll paw AT you if he wants attention and sitting there looking cute isn't getting him anywhere and yes when least expected you can get it right in the face.  Feels like a punch.

I've never had a dog use their paws as he does before...must jsut be one of those Doberman things.

I can not get any answers from the public defender...
