i have been taking the boys to an off leash park for the last few weeks.....typically they do not wander far from me and circle me as i walk around...if i sit on a bench the will stay there and dobie play.....until another dog comes and they stop their play....i cannot have them dobie play with the other dogs...as the brothers are far to well armed even to play fight with the others...that being said they do and can play fight with the great danes...especially norman...he's only 180 pounds.....and is an ok match for blue or hogan...and they cannot tag team the dane...because their is another dane with mim...only a year and a half and 125 pounds.....these are the only two dogs out of hundreds i am willing to let the boys play fight with....okay so it take two great danes to take on a dobie....lol...(you wanna see the mouth on norman...he is a white dane).....here's the deal...i started taking them separately as well....to try and tone down the tag team work....both dogs...found a dog to chase...and go nipping at their butts to the point i have to grab them off...or walk away and they will usually leave the other dog to circle me ....of course...i know my boyz are just beings dogs and want to show they are the strongest in the pack...and they are...but i cannot accept the nipping...and when all the dogs gang up on one....its just too much...i know its the pack mentality...but one family had tears in their eyes as they saw their lil one get pounded by about 10 dogs....the lil fuzzball was not hurt.....hogan started it......but left when i called....all the other dogs kept the chase going and blue jumped in....when i took hogan on his own...he tore ass right after another dog... it's always face to face...then they take the other dog down and nip their bums.....when i put them on a leash....with the gentle leader...which i am now using religously...those two dogs are in perfect heel...all the way around the park...i can do formation walking through trees  figure 8"s...and walk through the middle of the park..where they may be 10 or fifteen dogs in various states of play and fight....i command to heel....this way...and ignore...they are very good and even can ignore when two or three dogs come sniffing after us....i just keep marching and they are incredible...its the offleash dominace that i am worried abaout....my wife thinks the dog parks are not good becasue of health and domination reasons...what do you think???

I have always had mixed feelings about the dog park. On one hand it’s a great place to let them run off lead and get the energy burned off and socialize on the other hand you never know what’s going to happen.  You have a bunch of people with there dogs and you have no idea how well any other dog is trained or how healthy they are.  I stopped bring my two dogs to park because I ran into problems with other dog owners, not the dogs.
I can relate with the tag teaming on others.  My dobe (female) and my golden (male) who plays like a dobe have done the same thing.  They play rough with each other and normally tone it down for other doggie friends but every once in a while they “forget” and sustain that intensity of play with others.  Personally I will not bring both by myself; I am not comfortable with it.  I require backup another set of human eyes and hands if need be.  So if things start getting out of hand or they split up on me we can each focus our attention to one dog and make sure there are no problems.  My girl is pretty good but is she is having a real good time she is not above the occasional selective hearing when she thinks I am otherwise occupied.  Then I get the “oh you meant me” look.  Things that have helped to tone down the intensity of play at the dog park is walking them or exercising them first.   It seems to take the edge off. Any dog being super dominant in the park is asking for problems though.  There was interesting Dog Whisperer episode on dog parks that made a lot of sense to me.   But overall the dog park can be a challenging place.  For example you don’t know how someone might react and someone starts yelling as in “oh that big dog is chasing that little one” they hype up the whole crowd both 2 and 4 legged and that’s never good.  Also I have run into dogs with owners who seem to be MIA where their dogs run around completely unsupervised, or dog owners in denial “my mini poodle snarls at everyone for a greeting but he’s super friendly”.  The real reason I stopped going is a person hit my Golden there claiming he was going to bite them which he was not >:(.  Wow I have a lot to say about dog parks. Sorry for the long post.   :-[

I love taking Snoopy to the dog park, but the only thing that gets to me is that people think that it is a free for all with their dogs and thinks that just because you are at a dog park they don't have to still keep their dogs under control.  One time this Rottie was there Dominating every other dog there, obviously.  when he came up to Snoopy and Snoopy did not like this dog trying to take over, next thing you know they are scuffling and I went in to grab my dog.  The owner of the Rottie was right there watching as if it was not his dog, until I jumped in to grab Snoop.  The kid says "why don't you let them figure it out on their own? "I mean he is a Doberman and can probably handle himself".  I just looked at the kid and said why don't you learn to control your dog so that he does not try to fight every dog who comes in here?  He said that he did not see it as a problem and to mind my own business.  I told him that it becomes my business when his dog tries to fight with my dog, and that I argue in favor of strong breeds for what? for owners like you to make the breed look bad by letting your dog be aggressive with others.  I have never had another bad experience there since or before that, but I hope that it does not happen again.  I do know that it happens everywhere and have read some pretty amazing and scary stories about the dog park...  I still go and plan on it, but I too have mixed feeling about them.  I just try to keep a hawk's eye on whats going on...
