Hi all GD friends

We have a 1/2 acre enclosed yard with the house inside it. Michael works nearby, so Bella can go in and out at will during the day. Where we live is right up against a desert/ rocky/ natural area.

Today Bella was barking like crazy, my husband Michael could hear her from his studio workplace 150 ft away. He came down, Bella was on the porch, not running around crazy like she does when the coyotes go by.

But she was very agitated and looking at a big rattlesnake 5 ft away, stretching its 3 ft across the walkway!!! She would not go near it and was smart enough to call for help! Michael put her inside, and disposed of it. The neighbors are going to use the skin and eat it. It had 8 rattles and maybe was 8 years old. I feel sorry that its life was ended. I did not see it and was at work.

Bella gets rattlesnake bite vaccine, she has also had 2 rounds of rattler avoidance training, the last one almost 2 years ago. I feel like that was money well spent, because she remembered not to go near the snake. We are not sure if we will do it again.

In the photo, you can see the porch and steps, the snake was to her left.

Such a smart girl, I love her dearly. Now maybe I don't have to worry as much about trying to carry her out from a hike, if she were bit.

oh my what a good girl!!! don't care for snakes myself don't like slithery things tell her how wonderful she was I am so proud, at least with her around you might be safe on a walk......

my mom grew up with a collie/shepherd mix named Nipsy and while out blackberry picking she reached in to grab some berries and the dog jumped in just in front of her and snatched up a snake, a copperhead

Dogs are great that way - mine well let's just say mine are way too lazy to even bark at someone getting in my car late at night so I don't feel all that much safer with them hahahaha of course they are all deceased now but can't wait to see if the next one will be a Bella and show me dangers before I go headlong into them

WOW Super Girl!  What a good dog!

My boy Ti hates snakey snakes, aways pointing them out, but he gets way to close for comfort to them.  We are in NC and have to watch out for those copperheads, but so far have only run into corn snakes.

WONDERFUL Miss Bella!!

Thanks for reminding us of this training Jewels... it's so important.. and although the snake paid for it in the end... and I agree.. hate to see them die as they do a world of good.. it would be tragic for one of our babies to get bitten by one..

KUDOS to all..

Thanks for all your replies!

One thing, I think that because we never used a shock collar on Bella, the big shock (all 4 feet 3 feet off the ground) she got at the Avoidance traing was quite a big memory for her. She was on her tippy toes, frozen on the porch and all hackles up.

If it were a gopher or a king snake, of course we have no reason to kill them. This daddy-o was way to close to the house for comfort. There are lots of small furries around here: bunnies, mice and squirrels, that is why the snakes are around. They (the furries)  even come in to graze and poop inside our fence at night.

Bella is starting to use her dog door. She loves getting a treat outside and come runing through it to do it again:) She is so smart, and becoming an old soul, kind of like our old friend Kenya the ridgeback. Although she is extremely active and puppyish, she is showing some blond/silver under her chin.

Hi,

Yes Tal, we finished our fence, it must have been while you were 'away'. And yes, we love it and our view ( SF valley lights from the dining table and soon eating all meals on the porch) and the fact that dear B finally has the run of the yard. She gets to pick where new plants go by digging the holes.....

I think I wrote a post about the fence in the 'off topic' section.

p/s we love company! and our numerous 99% private trails are great for hiking with doggies!

Way to go Bella. It's got to be nerve wracking knowing dangerous venomous snakes will just make their way into your home . I'm glad Bella sounded the alarm without taking matters into her own paws. Give her an extra treat from me up in Northern Michigan. No poisonous snakes here just the occasional garter one but I still hate them .
