Here is a picture of Ginger "smiling."  For months, my husband would tell me that Ginger would "smile" when he came home from work and I was like, "get out; no way!" because I had never seen it.  I started asking her to smile whenever I came home and then one day she did it!  It was such a riot - and he was right; it is a smile!  She'll be in the kitchen when we come home. I'll say "where's your smile; lemme see it!"  She gets all flat and wiggly and coy, and she'll only do it when she is over-the-top happy.  I never thought we'd be able to capture her doing it because it only lasts a second, but my husband snapped this pic and he got it!  It really is the funniest thing and I never tire of seeing it.

(Those of you who may have seen my posts know that I have been trying to post a picture for ages.  If this comes out, it is only because of rgreen's helpful assistance.  Thanks, Richard!)

This is the best smile pic I've gotten, although I do have a few.  This is my Karma.

OMG, that is so funny!!!  Are those top teeth or bottom teeth!?  Is that a dobie trait?  If so, I never knew!  What a riot!

You have to be careful though. Most will mis-understand the action. I had a fawn female (Heidi) when I lived in Virginia. She would do it all the time when she was happy. The ears up, nub wagging and smile. However, I had trouble keeping her in the yard, and a neighbor whose mother was afraid of dogs.

One day, Heidi got out and the neighbors mother was in their back yard near our property line, weeding their back flower bed. Heidi went up, and gave her a nose bump trying to get a pet. The lady looked over to see Heidi smiling and jumped up screaming and ran to the house throwing the gardening tools every which way. Not good.

In order to keep Heidi from being declared a "problem" dog, as it was not the first encounter with the neighbor, she went to stay with my neice in Houston for 6 months who was needing a good protection dog at the time and offered to host her until things cooled down. Basically, she went on the lam for a while.

The first Doberman I ever met was a HUGE black and rust named Pax.. He would  come barreling down the stairs to greet me at the front door with that toothy grin and scare the daylights out of me.. Pax was well named.. what a sweet heart!!

It is a Doberman trait (although other breeds do it, too) and it seems to run in family lines.

In my case, Karma's grandsire, Dallas, was a huge smiler as was her mother, Ember.  The dog I bred Ember to, Doc, was also a smiler and my whole litter of 5 (Karma and her siblings) are/were smilers.

It's been a little more hit and miss in my other litters.  Some do, some don't.  Some smile without showing their teeth, which I call the "Joker grin" because they look like the Joker in Batman with the ends of their mouths all upturned.  My old guy that I lost last year at 11, Rocket, was one of them and so is his daughter, Kismet, who incidently is Karma's daughter.

Anyway, those are Karma's top teeth.  She looks like she's wearing false teeth in that pic but that's all her.  I've got another smiling pic of Karma, and I've got 2 pretty good ones of her mom, Ember. Ember would really flash all of her teeth more wide open.

This is Karma's mom, Ember, who was a big smiler.

This is the other one I have of Karma smiling.

HA, HA!!! these are great pics!  I had no idea that others did this.  When Ginger does it, it's just for a second, but she is definitely happy when she does it. That is one big set of choppers on Karma; that first picture looks like those redneck teeth you can buy at the joke shop!  The last picture really looks like a smile and is so cute!  Ginger smiles with her teeth closed, too, but sometimes it looks like that sick look they can get when you scold them after they do something really bad. I know that she is happy, though.

rgreen, poor sweetie Heidi; I think it is so sad when our angels are misunderstood. Heidi sounds like such a sweetie.

I was so proud of Ginger today; we had two people over to the house she hadn't met or seen in a long while and she was so good.  She was wild for a couple of minutes (barking), but then we gave her and Lexie a rawhide and they were quiet as babies.  Ginger even got up on the couch and showed my SIL her rawhide.  Afterward, she would alternate sitting by both of our guests, doing the "lean."

P.S.  Glengate, those whiskers are priceless!

Love the smiling photos! To those that don't know it can be rather scary to see them do it. I really miss having one that smiles. None of mine do it now.

Gingers mom It's good to see you posting again, missed you and wondered where you have been. BTW Ginger has a great smile!

Of course that one counts....I love seeing the Royal Diva out of her element!

The first ones we got because we were playing with a hair clip....she barks, and bares her teeth for it.  The last one she did on her own.  We were lucky to get them because usually when we pull out the camera she stops what she is doing to pose...lol

Control Freak, love the pictures of Athena "smiling," especially the last one!!!  What a classic and quite a feat for you to catch the picture!  She is a gorgeous girl, and so beautiful in her scarf.  Kate, I love that picture of Sofia.  She is so happy and being a goose!  It is hard for royalty to let their hair down and be silly.

So True, Ginger's mommy.  Bet the Diva thought she had destroyed the evidence of rolling in the grass!
