Is she a doberman mix?

We adopted Penny about a month ago, and she's about 12 weeks old now. The photo of her was at around 9 weeks. Everyone thinks she's a doberman mix. She does seem to have the temperament of a doberman. She is the sweetest and smartest puppy, definitely very clingy... She's curious, brave, and she loves other dogs, people and kids. What do you guys think? Is she a doberman mix and what are some tell-tale signs that she is?

yes looks like a mix to me, due to short legs and prick ears and the facial structure is a bit different to me......but wow what a cutie pie

Oh she definetly has Dobie in her based on those markings and that red color is pretty unmistakeable! She is super cute! How big is she , what does she weigh? She doesn't seem like she will get very big based on the size of her feet, that's good though, big heavy dogs always have shorter life spans and higher vet bills. I'd say you could have the best of both worlds right there! Great doberman temperment with small loveable lapdog package :)

Thanks, all. She's been such a blessing. She's about 17 lbs right now. The vet seems to think she'll be 100 lbs, but I have my doubts due to her little paws. Here's a photo of her from yesterday. As you can see, her legs are growing in. I can't believe how big she's gotten in just a few short weeks. I'm so excited to be raising a doberman. This site has been really helpful in understanding how she thinks and feels. So, I'm really glad to have found this little community.

Hello from one dobermutt family to another! She definitely looks like she has some doberman in her to me! And this forum is really wonderful, even for custom designer dogs like ours that are doberman and then some!

Glengate & Samrii, I agree. She looks just like an Australian Kelpie. But her temperament doesn't quite match that of a Kelpie. She's not super energetic. In fact, she's very chill. We try to get her to chase after frisbees and tennis balls, and after a while, she gets bored/tired, lays down and chews on sticks. Unless she's with other dogs... then, she can play all day. She just loves other dogs and needs to say "hi" to every dog we come across, which isn't characteristic of a doberman either...

Dasz, your pups are so cute. I love the photo of Stryker and his big stick. Penny's the same way. She's always looking for sticks to bring home.

Hahaha she is very cute. Those ears ^_^ I don't know how much I would base ruling in or out kelpie vs Doberman based on not wanting to chase inanimate objects. Juneau has zero interest in forms of fetch, but add another dog to play with or something live to chase and game on. I had a kelpie growing up who would never play fetch her entire life. Either way though, very cute pup :)

Hey all. Just wanted to give an updated photo of Penny at 21 weeks and over 30 lbs. She's an amazing puppy and is learning a lot. She loves to just sit and take in the fresh air. We're also learning a lot from her, like to live in the moment. If anyone has any fun games that you play with your doberman, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks!

Thanks for the update on precious Penny.. What a love..

The " find it game" has always been a favorite here. Plus it can go a long way for starter S.A.R. dogs if perhaps you think you'd like to explore that option.

Put Penny in a sit and stay...

Start with a red solo cups ( coz thanks to Toby Keith nothing says 'party' like a red solo cup) Place three side by side. Pick one up and place a treat under it... ( that way Penny will get the idea.)

Tell her 'FIND IT" of course she will as she watched you 'hide' it.. now. try putting it under a cup without her watching..

Don't forget to be totally ecstatic when she knocks over the cup and finds her treat.

Now that she has the idea of 'find it." Introduce her to a toy...let her smell it... once again.. 'sit...stay' and hide it under a cushion, or on top of something visible until she realizes that she needs to find and retrieve TO YOU..

Don't forget to name the object.

Go Find....ball..

Go find... hedgehog..

Go find ..my mind.. whoops getting ahead of myself here.. sorry..

Progress till you can have her sit and wait while you go to another part of the house to hide the object.

You will be amazed at how quickly they learn this.. and how they love it.

Before you know it.. Penny will be 'finding' lost keys.. wallets... almost anything.. and you just might end up with a certified Search and Rescue dog..

HAVE FUN..

Smooches to the Pooches..

Penny is ADORABLE!  Thanks for the update.

Lady Kate thanks for those game directions, use to play that with Tiberius but have not done it for years now.  He use to love it, have to remember to pull that one out again on rainy days!

OMG. I absolutely love this. I was already trying to teach her the names of her toys. So this is perfect at killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Thank you so much for the suggestion. We will be playing it this weekend. Can't wait!

I want to come steal her - keep those pics coming!

My girl is 2 and still LOVES "find it" games. Sometimes we use a toy, but she also is great at nosework with scent hides. It's so fun watching her use her brain.

Using a tug is also a lot of fun and a great way to teach "out". Also burns off energy!

she is SO cute!!!! I love her sit pic!! my two whippets do this in the yard and just sit and take in the breeze and the sun. It's very touching to watch them love their life in that way......

Again TOO cute!!!
