Romeo my Schutzhund dog playing tug with a Chihuhua

8 replies [Last post]

Okay so couldn't help but share this pic my daughter took today of Romeo with her Chi Ava. He was trying to be so gentle with her it was cute. Just for comparison the first photo is his big tough macho photo and then him playing tug with the Chi lol

Okay whoops that one needed to be downsized! now for his cute gentle side lol. You can see how he has the rope in his front little teeth just barely holding on to it.

Oh Des.. what a darling he is .. and how amazing is that!! He can go from attack to attract in 60 seconds..

When you have time, would you let us ( me) know more about Schutzhund.. it looks kinda scary.

Romeo's trainer looks mean.. There's so much I don't know about Schutzhund.

I suppose I could google it, but I'd rather hear about it from you.

smooches to the pooches.

Arm protection or not it would have to be a bit scary the first few times a Doberman came at you like that....or any dog for that matter.

Love the gentle side..:)

I know this looks very scary to MOST people. I just wanted to show the contrast between the 2 pictures. Romeo is a real sweetheart and you would never dream by looking at him or living with him that he is trained for the sport of Schutzhund.

Iwill have to post more on Schutzhund at a later date when time allows. To comment on how his trainer looks mean this is part of the tactic used to stare at them and make certain noises to deepen the defense drive. You really have to have a very STABLE temperament in a dog to do this sport. I know it looks really scary and many longtime dog people dont understand what it takes to really make a Schutzhund dog. They dont realize the amount of training that goes into it and the dogs drives have got to be just so to pull off the whole game. Your average Doberman would not be able to compete or even train in this sport because they lack the solid drives it takes. It is very demanding mentally as well as physically and the dog has to have excellent drives and a rock solid temperament. They are trained to a higher degree then police dogs and much more predictable.

I just wanted everyone to see how cute and gentle he can be with his friend Ava the Chihuahua.

If you go to my website www.rnddobermans.net and look at Romeos page you will see how this particular game progresses. For Romeo at this time it is all play. It starts with a solid temperament that has strong prey/play drives. As you progress through my pictures you will see how he starts off with a leather rag that the trainer uses to build drive in tug. Then he brings out this sleeve and builds the drive to really want this sleeve and to play the game of tug. The sleeve is then warn by the trainer and the dog is only allowed to take a bite in certain instances under very controlled training.

I will try to post more on this later when I have more time. For now enjoy the tenderness shown by a very smart boy who knows he can fling that little 3lb dog through the air in a heartbeat but chooses not to because he is such a very SWEET and loving boy. Love my lil guy!

Now if only Steve could figure out how to play gently, the little men in my household might be inclined to play!

Very cute.

I've seen Sofia switch gears from a truly strong prey drive to a nurturing mellow mamma..She can go from full out, full on chase mode, to a comforting and sweet sweet girl at the snap of a finger.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend who's Doberman actually felt HORRIBLE when she inadvertently hurt an iguana... Our Dobermans are multi faceted and sometimes I'm not sure we give them as much credit as they truly deserve!!

RnD I just checked out your website and Romeo is MOST impressive.. Great job!! Can't wait for more pictures..

Love the photos of the wonderful contrasting personality that dobermans can achieve.  Ziva wants to play with my 7 lb rat terrier, but she's still a little bit clumsey and he wants plenty of room when she starts slinging her feet around playing!  She is learning, though, and will actually lie down on her stomach on the floor to play with him so that it doesnt scare him because she probably looks more like Godzilla to him when they are both standing.
