Thanks for your notes - I love talking about Ginger!  Ginger will be six in November. She is 45 lbs.  She is a Dobie mix, but I consider her dobie strain to be dominant.  My husband and I got her from the city pound when she was only nine weeks old.  She was all by herself in a huge cage with all the other adult dogs.  It was bedlem; she appeared very calm, however, and was happy to be petted and talked to through the cage door. I still find it hard to believe that someone would have dropped off this tiny angel. We adopted her then and there but couldn't take her home for a week.  They spayed her before she was released - she was so little!  I had never heard of spaying that young.  When we picked her up, the kennel tech handed her to me.  I held against my chest and she immediately wriggled up and buried her head in the crook of my neck.  That was it for me.  She has been the most wonderful dog I have had. So affectionate and definitely velcro! She was a terror as a puppy but then after a year or so, I don't remember exactly, it was like a switch flicked and she was a total snuggle bear. Someday I will have a full Dobie and am very exceited about it. I love reading this message board and everyone's stories.  It is because of sweet Ginger that I know firsthand of this wonderful breed and will someday have a purebred.

Hi Carantz,

Emma is so lovely and elegant!  What a gorgeous girl!  I love the picture of her sleeping with her head tucked.  So she's about 4-1/2 months now?  How much does she weigh?  She sounds so well behaved and calm. I was very interested to hear your experience with having her flown in and also with her ear taping.  I must say that I am very nervous about the prospect of ear taping and posting.  People seem to get through it okay though.  This was the first I had heard about stretching the stitches but it makes total sense.  It will probably be a few years until I get a full dobie as we have two dogs now and I don't want to do three at once.  For now, I get to read about everyone's exploits and learn from you all.  I think everyone's dogs are just beautiful; Dobermans are the most exquisite breed.

Thanks, Judy.  I think it's wonderful how much we all love our dogs!  It's great to talk to people who know how special this breed is - it's such a wonderful connection.  Your baby is precious, too - what a snuggle bear!  :)

Gingers mom,

I thought she looked a little older, thats why I asked. The white around her muzzle is what gave it away. I had a purebred dobie that lived to be 17 years old, before she died almost all of her muzzle was white. I do agree that the Doberman is an awesome dog! Myself I'm more of a dobie lover then a dog lover!! A dobie will out smart any other breed!! Side to side with the German Shepard the Doberman will learn faster but will need to be put back in place more often (A dobie will talk back and show you attitude).

thanks so much for Complimenting my little Emma girl. She actually just turned 17 weeks old today. She is getting so big so fast. Right now she weighs about 30lbs. give or take.  On the 6th of July she will have been posted for exactly two months. So far the ears look good. I have used the tampon method and change them out every three days. With each posting I leave the ears down a little longer and longer. she actually has her post out right now and will leave them out for a good 48 hours and then repost. The next time I take them down I will leave them down for 60 hours or so (unless they start to fall). Its really not that hard to post, I think its actually harder on the puppy then anything else; but they really don't mind it that much. My only word of advise is to get yourself a soft scratch collar like I used (see blue collar in pictures on my gallery). I've had three dobie growing up throughout my life and I wish I would have used this collar years ago. Not really sure where you can buy these soft scratch collars (mine was given to me by my Vet/neighbor). keep the ears dry and clean! When you do get your dobie I can walk you though it, also there are alot of different ways to post listed through-out the Internet. Word to the wise don't post the ears with anything that can bend (especially in the beginning) such as backer-rod / or foam pipe-insulation and no glue. A big help to getting the ears done fast - is to constantly constantly constantly watch them and make sure they don't get the post off or scratch at them. If they do scratch just give a sharp NO and give them something else to play with to occupy there time. A board dobie will scratch and scratch until they find something else to do!

about getting her shipped to me: everything worked out great. Of course my stomach was in knots and I paced alot; but she made it (two hours late). The breeder was very confident and had done it a bunch with no hassels. The thing I didn't like the most about her getting shipped was her ears were cropped on one day and she was shipped to me just a day after they were done. That made me nervous and if the breeder would of waited 2 more days, she probably wouldn't have been able to rip stitches out. Never the less I was happy to get her at 7 weeks old. Actually I can't believe these breeders that ship, don't use these soft scratch collars; it would of gone along way with Emma.

As for getting your future dobe- I would strongly suggest going to the same place I did. They were absolutely great and helpful with everything, We actually are still in contact just about every week with Emma updates. I got Emma from Braveheartkennels.com. Put your order in way in advance because they don't last long with this breeder she is known all over the world.

Keep checking in with my gallery photos as I will post more each week or even sooner.

Again thanks for the good reply look forward to keeping in touch

Awwww; thanks Aaron and Q Tip!  Ginger is getting pretty white around her muzzle for only six.  A few weeks ago, I noticed her first white whisker!  This morning I woke up early (way too early for little Miss to get up!), and rolled on my side.  She scootched up right next to me and used my arm as a pillow with her nose just touching my face. Like Lady Kate said, we were breathing the same air. She had her whole leg resting across my neck. She just fills me up. Every day I love her more and more.  I know everyone feels the same about their precious ones, too.

Aaron, thanks for the great information!

She is very pretty.  I Have Snoopy who I still fell is mixed with a GSD, but all the vets that have looked at him say he is a purebeed?   I know that a dobie with the full tail is not supposed fan out as Snoopy's does.  It is not that important what he may be mixed with we still love hime the same.  If he is mixed he is obviously more Dobie  than any other.

She is pretty and I am sure she is a bundle of joy to be around.

Hi Snoopydobe,

Snoopy looks like a purebred to me - he sure is beautiful like a doberman. If he and Ginger aren't, they certainly have enough doberman in them for us to know firsthand the noteworthy traits of the breed.  He must be a mellow boy if you can put a santa hat on him and have it stay there long enough to snap a picture plus run on the treadmill!  I've never tried it as our treadmill is in the basement, but I think Ginger would freak out.  Snoopy is a baby.  :)

Yea, calm not really.  That was 1 shot of about 50 tries to get him to chill out for the pic.  You see my wife had gotten a Christmas ornament for the tree that was a dog paw that you could put a pic in and it said 2009.  So I thought what better way to remember what year we got him every christmas then to put it in there.  It took me about a month to finally get one shot that was useful.

The treadmill thing took sometime also.  He was terrified of it at first, he even dropped one on the belt 3 seperate times to show me he did not like it.  He did learn one thing is that he was happy when he was tired.  Then after not putting him on it for a couple of days I woke up in the morning and spotted him on the treadmill just sitting there waiting for me to turn it on.  It was something I had tried to tire him out in the winter time flopped or so I thought.  he has been using it ever since not everyday though.  We still have a long walk everyday to get outside. like I said this was introduced when we could not get outside because of the high snow drifts in the winter.

Now I can put him on it and he will go until he feels he has had enough.  As long as I am in the same room.  Now he does it without even a collar attached and cn freely get off if he wants.  The longest he has ever went by himself is about an hour which turned out to be 4.5 miles.  He is a good boy and we like to impress people with how willing he is to try new things.  My friends are amazed by him.

Thank you for your compliments.

Hee, hee!  What great stories and visuals!  I can't believe he actually sat on the treadmill waiting, or that he will trot on it for an hour - what a doll - and very smart!
