Hi everyone!

This sounds like a great group! I can't wait to start reading all about your dogs and learning even more about this magnificent breed.

I am owned by two Dobes. My almost 12-year-old "mostly" Dobe girl and my newest, 11-month-old boy Finn. Carla is being a sweatheart of a big sis, teaching Finn the ropes and tolerating his big puppy goofiness. She must remember when she was just as goofy as he was years ago. Both my guys were shelter rescue dogs.

So, color question. I'm curious about Finn's color. He was listed at the rescue as a fawn, but his coat was a mess. After a few weeks of fish oil and good food, his coat is deepening as I suspected it would, but he'll never be dark enough to call him red. His head is quite red, but his body is more fawn. Perhaps he's a mix? I don't care either way. He's gorgeous and sweet and perfect, but I'm just wondering if this is a normal presentation of fawn or if he just has a funny coat.

My Carla is very red, the deep reddish-chocolate red. He looks like caramel next to her.

Thanks!

Hey, welcome to the forum!

our Bella is a mix and has a nice reddish coat, some people think she may be mixed with Visla or Rhodesian, but it could be lab too, as she loves to swim in a pool...

she looks considerably like your male, has a very slight 'saddle' of darker hair and orange yellow dobie like face and leg markings.

post piccies your Carla too...

Wow! Princepessa, your pooch is very similar in color to Finn. They could be littermates! Bella looks so beautiful too. I was leaning toward getting a viszla before Carla stole my heart. I still love the breed, but now I'm more partial to Dobes.

I just loaded more pics to my gallery of my pooches. I have thousands of pics of Carla of course. I need to get more of Finn. Finn's one-month Gotcha Day and first birthday is tomorrow, so I need to plan something fun that will end itself to cute pics.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

When in doubt about coat color, look at their nose leather. From your pictures, I would say red.... but pictures can be tricky.  I would have a full thyroid workup as the mottled color could be indicitive of a low thyroid.  Hopefully good food and supplements will continue to improve his coat.

What a beautiful pup. I had to look real hard at the one with the hand. On my end it looks like this giant hand and little dog and we know Dobes are not little .

Nose leather! I love that term. I haven't heard of it, but I'll be using it all the time.

Well, his nose leather is closer to red than fawn, but also not dark. But, his coat is getting deeper and deeper. Perhaps he's a mix or a very light red. Either way, he's amazing and learning so much so fast. He makes me laugh every day with his big puppy doofiness.

Ha ha.. That is a giant hand. The shelter attendant was trying to get his attention, but there were other dogs walking around and all he wanted to do was play with them. :)

Zooey's coat looked similar to Finn's when we got her but she has darkened quite a bit to a red/liver color, which matches her nose leather. It was funny because she was light when we got her but with good food and indoor living she started to lose the top lighter coat over a couple months until all she had was a remaining patch over her butt that I thought would never go away - even when I used a deshedder tool the fur didn't seem to want to let go. I called it her "butt toupe." Now that the hot weather is here, the butt toupe finally fell off. From the picture, you can see she is definitely a mix though and has a little bit of white mixed in to her coat with white markings on her chest and toes. Her eyes are that pretty light amber color that red dobermans often have, although sometimes they make her look a bit like "crazy eyes".

I'm leaning more towards red. I have a red and a fawn and your dog looks like a lighter version of my red. My fawn is almost silvery. Ill post a picture of both as soon as i figure out how. My profile picture has my red and my fawn laying side by side if that helps until I can get a picture on here.
