Usually we check the yard before letting Sofia out in the morning.. Look for bunnies or any other critters who might have come to call overnight.
This morning, Mike let her out without checking and sure enough there was Brere Hare quietly munching the broccoli.
She immediatley pounced and swooped up the bunny. .. not wanting to part with her find, she slipped inside. She took the poor thing, who was looking pretty lifeless by now, up to her spot on the sofa and proceeded to just hold it close to her chest between her great paws. and started to lick it... all over... Just like Lazarus, it revived and started to squeak a bit...
Enough of this.. "BOTH of you OUTSIDE" was the order of the day.
Both Lazarus and Sofia hopped outside, the bunny, pretty soggy and dazed by now threw itself into the fence only to karum back into Doberjaws.
The bath continued til Mike gently pulled her back.. bunny fine, albeit a little 'damp' hopped away... again.
Did she think it was a puppy? A toy? Just wanted to taste Spring Canejo? Or does the girl just want a baby brother?

I think it's time to get Sofia a baby brother Kate...for being such a regal, beautiful doberlady she sure has the makings of a great mom!  She needs to feel needed so maybe a young brother would suit her well...

Poor Sofia..

She's been sad all day. Sulky, pouty, didn't even greet me at the door with her usual wiggly butt and dancing eyes.

She truly misses that little guy and I have a mind to let her 'keep' the next one.. I don't think she would hurt it.. I think she would try to raise it.

Great.. that's all we need; a hundred and one hares and their hare-letts.

Mike has been talking about another rescue. Lord knows there are enough of them here in Baja.. We thought until now she was an 'only child' but things can change..

....stay tuned.....

Maybe it is time, she certainly is letting you know the only way she can that she wants a baby brother or sister that needs her attention and care...

Hi Lady Kate,

What a heartwarming story!!! OMG! Sophia is an angel. Now we all have a mental image of Lazurus and love him now, too!  I know this may be the farthest thign from your mind, but you really could write a book - just of daily journal entries like this one.  I have read many of your others, too. People would love it - not just dobie lovers. It would be a great children's book. Your stories create such amazing visuals and are heartwarming to the core. You could make a gazillion dollars and shouldn't feel uncomfortable about that - the Universe has a way of providing when one contributes to the greater good. Your stories teach love, affection, kindness, connection, humility, reverence, compassion. The world could always use more of that. (If I may be so humble, I would to request a first edition, signed copy.)   :)

If you didn't want to go bigger (like another dog), how about a Guinea pig for Sophia?  My niece has one and they are very affectionate - and they are very domesticated. They love to be petted and they will let you know when they are content, which she might like. Actually, they chirp when they are happy, hungry or mad (so they are pretty much chirping all the time). I think Sophia would maybe like the vocal interaction. Their bodies are pretty dense, so maybe they wouldn't be quite as fragile as a bunny. You will figure out what is best. Good luck!

Gingersmommy~~

Thank you so much for such lovely words..

I do write a column for a local newspaper and with sincere apologies to Marley and Me,  I'd like to call it Sofia and Such.. as there's other subjects besides our DoberDiva.

She is a constant source of inspiration..

We've been experiencing an odd summer.. 33 straight days of skyless gloom and we're all sick of it.. Right now Miss Priss is glaring out the windows.. she doesn't even want to go out.

"I don't do drizzle"

A guiniea pig huh? Never even thought of it..it might make a great pet for our golden girl.

Thanks again.. It's a writer's passion to touch others and reading your thoughtful comments is truly a joy for me.. You've made my day!!

Blessings to all

Lady Kate - don't forget how the book Marley and Me came about. It was a compilation of a series of newspaper articles in which the saga of the puppy Marley and his growing up and adult years were told.

While you obviously could not tell the story about the puppyhood and growing up years of Sophia, you can make quite a case of the joys that a rescued animal can bring.

As to Lazarus, this could also be a manifestation of the trauma she went through right before she found you and Mike. She has most likely never really gotten over it, and truly no mother would.
