So diesel is 7 months old, and has a broken back leg. We got it taken care of and wrapped up. Being a teenager he's obviously pretty hyper which sucks trying to keep him calm so his leg can heal. Well he's got the soft bandage, and to keep him out of it we started with just a cone. Somehow he figured out how to still reach the bandage, so we switched to a larger cone. Guess what, HE STILL GOT TO IT! So we went to a double cone. What we thought would be a last resort soon became our last option, and now our only option: a muzzle. Even weaving the buckle in with his collar he is still able to get the muzzle off. For now what is working best is a muzzle and cone woven through his collar. Every now and then though he will even get both of those off, and when we check to see how he did it, the knot is untied!  I'm definitely ready for his cast to come off next week so i can start working with him putting all those smarts to good use.

Welcome to the forum!  How are you exercising Diesel?  I can't imagine trying to keep a 7 month old puppy quiet long enough for a broken leg to heal.  Brinks get crazy after only 1 day of no exercise (weather's been bad here in the southeast this winter).  How did he get his hind leg broken?

We haven"t been able to exercise him at all. Dr's orders he needs to be as immobilized as possible. It really sucks, thats another reason I'm so ready to get his cast off, so we can actually take him out an get him playing. About 2 months ago he started peeing in the kitchen floor, so I said, " NO, OUTSIDE!" from the couch. Before I could get up to go take him to his spot outside, I heard him smack the sliding glass door. He was trying to make it out the doggie door, and Im guessing slid into the glass door. Right after the smack on the glass door, all I hear is him bawling up a storm. It ended up being a clean break about 8" from his hip.

Yeesh, that sounds terrible!  And I thought having to deal with a cone and stitches for 2 weeks was bad...I hope your boy is feeling better soon!  I love that name, Deisel - that was one we considered if we got a male :)

Welcome to you both from Janelle and Dakota!

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Just as a note... sometimes if you put a little tobasco on the bandage (not enough to soak, like two or three drops) it will prevent them from gnawing on it.  Though I will say if they want it off bad enough nothing will stop them.

Glad to hear he's almost done with it though.  How'd he get hurt?

welcome Texasboy and Diesel.. So sorry to hear about Diesel's injury. That had to be scary for everyone. Glad you had double paned glass on that door, I can't even imagine what COULD have happened..

Good luck with the healing process.... can you take him swimming for exercise?

We can't get his cast wet at all, so he's just gotta lay around. And now we just took him to the vet, and ANOTHER two weeks before the cast comes off. So just that much longer that he cant do anything. Fun fun.

jeshykai funny story about using hot sauce on his cast to try an keep him from gettin at it. I put a few drops on my finger just to try and see if he would like it or turn his nose at it. the lil S**t loves it!
