We just got the results from the DNA test for von Willebrand's and Dexter's score was 77.  As we understand it, 35-50 is Affected, 50-70 is Carrier, and 70-180 is Clear.  So he just made it!

Also, I have a new photo from this morning with the tape off his ears - we're letting them air out today.

Hi Larry, that is great news!!  I plan to have Jersey tested as well, I don't know if he's ever been tested as I don't know much of his background before we found his home with us.  And what a great looking dog you have :)

The DNA test does not have numerical scores.  The DNA test comes back as either clear, carrier or affected.  The DNA test is available through VetGen http://www.vetgen.com and is not something you have done at the vet.  It's a cheek swab test that you do at home and mail to VetGen.

It sounds like you had the Elisa blood assay test done at your vet's, which is problematic and will vary day to day depending on illness, stress, parasites, hormones, lab handling, etc.  I know someone who had their Doberman Elisa tested 3 times and each time it came back with vastly different results that could have put it in all 3 of the categories.  It's really quite useless for definitive testing of vWD.

Jammie and Lori, thanks for your good thoughts.

Glengate, our vet was very specific that she sent his swab sample to Vetgen for the DNA test, which took a couple of weeks to get results from.  Perhaps only topline results are sent to owners (i.e. Clear, Carrier, Affected), and more detailed internal info is sent to vets.

Good news definitely. Going to be a very handsome lad, he is starting to lose the puppy cuteness, but really looks like a fine young Dobie.
