Ares chewing on his ball.

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile. It's been very busy around here between work, training classes and doctors appointments. Thought I would give an update on my rare day off. Ares turned a year old on April 18th! He has become such a loving well rounded pup. He has out grown his destructive phase. The last thing he destroyed was his crates lol. He is so strong he busted the metal on his crate and let himself out while I was at work lol. We tried the big plastic crates and he is so smart he figured out if he pushed his back against the top and at the same time pushed his head on the door he could open it. So now he has free roam of the living room while I'm gone and does great.

Ares loved going to training class so much he became sad once his advanced class was over. We decided to keep up his training he became the youngest dog to go through protection training and is doing great. His instructor just tested him for search and rescue training and passed the first test. Saturday is his second test and if he does well they will enroll him in that class.

During his free time he loves to play catch with his balls. He will jump and catch the balls in his mouth and strut around so proud lol. We had to switch to kong balls because Ares bite is so strong he chews on the tennis balls and busts them open. Looks like he is chewing gum when he does this. My boss just got a Rottie so we use Ares to help teach my boss how to train his pup. Ares loves showing off for him lol.

Now that I am 28 weeks pregnant ares acts different with me. When I come home from work he meets me at the door and sniffs my tummy then walks me to my chair. He leans so hard against my legs it's like he pushes me to sit down. Then he gets in my lap and lays his head across my tummy. Lol. When he does this the baby will kick. I can't help but laugh now that Ares can feel the baby kick him he will groan when it happens and take his nose and push back on my tummy. As if him and the baby are playing a game with each other. If the baby isn't moving when Ares gets in my lap ares will push on my tummy until the baby moves lol.

I will try to be on here more often now that I'm getting days off again.

Ares this morning already waiting on baby to kick him lol.

Talisin I will try to remember to take some pics for you the next time we go demo for the boss. I say demo for boss only because he is the one that needs trained lol not the pup. Once I have the boss trained the pup is a breeze to train lol. I had to put my boss in a time out and lecture him as to why he needed to stop bathing Lucky once a week lol.

Baby will be here in July and I'm sure I will have tons of pics to share. I think Ares will do well with the baby. When we take him to petsmart and there is a baby in there we ask if Ares can meet the babies. Ares will sniff them and then he will sit and lick their feet. It's so funny to watch his nub of a tail start to wag when the babies start laughing or cooing at him.

Ok now let me be clear on something as far as Ares protection training. I got an email earlier from someone asking me why I wanted him to be taught to be mean. I don't want him to be a mean dog at all! And he isn't he is very loving to people. But he has become naturally protective over us and we wanted to be sure we could control him if the need came to pass. Ares is also being trained in search and rescue to help out with the police. And for that reason he needs to be all around trained on all commands.

We had a teenager fall off a bridge and pass away and they didn't find his body for days. They only had one search dog to help along with most of the town. The dog found him but I was told if they had more well trained dogs to help they could have found the boy faster and possibly alive. This is not the first child to have passed away like that. This tugged at my heart for so long that I talked my husband into having Ares tested for differnt things to help out our local police when they need. Once this training is done he will be tested for water search and rescue and possibly drug search and rescue. We live in a very small town and I know if that had been my son I would have wanted anyone helping that was properly trained.

Ares trainer owns the facility and they actually train police dogs there as well. That is one of their specialties. So in my eyes if having Ares trained in areas he tests well for one day saves a child's life then all the training, time and money is well worth it. Hope this helps to resolve any other questions as to why I am having him trained I all these areas. Any other questions just ask I am not afraid to explain the answers even if I'm not agreed with lol.

He sounds like he needs a date book to stay on top of his appointments and classes :)) he is one busy dog!!!  I personally think that if you know your dog has a natural talent for protection it is wise to train them so that you can control that urge, you don't want the dog making the decisions for you you want to make the decision for the dog and training is the only way, and it let's him know that you approve of his behavior but only on your terms so I think it will teach him a bit of restraint cause where he might automatically "go off" on something he will look to you to tell him if he should with the right training and that keeps him defused......that's my take on it......

Congrats on all the schooling and training and keeping him busy being a working dog and helping the community and helping the community will also help the community accept and spread the word that dobermans are great dogs in the right hands.....good PR

Ares passed his search and rescue testing with flying colors!

I have also learned that ares has become very picky about things. He is so spoiled lol. Ares refuses to drink the water at his training classes. They have water in bowls every where inside and out for the dogs. Ares will not drink the water I had to empty a bowl and wash it out and then put cold water from the culligan bottle just so he could have a drink. He refuses to play with any dog toys there. If another dog had it in his mouth ares will not play with it lol. I guess I will have to start packing a bag filled with water, treats and toys to take to classes from now on. Has anyone else noticed their pups being so picky?

Congrats on the test.

Storm wont drink out of dog bowls outside of home. She must have it fresh from the tap. And like an idiot- I stand there with the tap running. When she wants a drink (and when she just wants to say 'Oz come') she'll stand by the tap, with the bowl full of water, and every other dog drinking from it, and wait for me to turn on the water for her. It does come in handy a lot of the time. There are more taps than there are bowls when we're out, but she just takes it too far sometimes :)

Thanks! Ares has had 2 search and rescue classes now. The first one I took him to by myself, David had to work. Ares didn't do to well that day. He really wouldn't engage with his new trainer in a game. He just wanted to be next to me lol. I told his trainer it was because he is more protective over me since I'm pregnant and he won't play much around me. So I made sure to bring David with us yesterday and ares did great. He was engaged with his trainer and David. His trainer laughed and said mom I think you were right he is to gentle with you right now so dad needs to be the one here playing the games for now. A female trainer came out to help and ares would not play with her as much either. And when he did he was very gentle with her like he is with me lol. She finally got him to play a game of tug with her but he barely pulled the rope but if you let one of the guys get the rope ares tugs hard enough he tries to pull the guys down lol. In mid training ares stuck his nose in the air and started sniffing then he started pulling on his leash so the trainer said let's see what ares smells. We let ares lead all of us around and ares went over to these shelves and started sniffing a lot. Come to find out there was a jar of teeth sitting on the top shelf. They use for cadaver search and rescue. So now ares will be trained in both cadaver and live search and rescue since he has shown he has a nose for both. He said if ares does well with that then they will do water search after he has the others mastered. He also said ares is such a good dog and is showing a lot of their clients that this breed is not the dangerous breed they are said to be. And they would like for us to be able to give people demos out there to help people learn more about how good dobermans are when they have the right people raising them and that they aren't these monster breeds people think they are.

Yes ares does like the finer things in life. Lol. I forgot to fill his water bottle to take to class with us( it's just tap water from home) lol. But he now has the staff at his training facility trained haha. The receptionist sees ares and says you must be thirsty boy and fixes him some bottled water lol. There were other clients in there laughing saying wow how can we get the royal treatment for our dogs lol.

I will make sure to take pics next class. I didn't have my phone on me this time.

Yes he is that much taller. The Rottie is about half as tall as Ares. Lucky is only about 4 months old. He is going to be a big boy. Yeah they were wore out they played for an hour just chasing and jumping on each other.

Ok Talisin here is the baby update you were waiting on. I had baby Hunter on Wednesday he weighed 7 lbs and is 19 1/2 inches long with brown hair. We came home on Friday and introduced Ares to him. We started off by greeting ares alone and showing him attention. Then we put his pinch and leash on just to be on the safe side. Things went well. Ares sniffed him all over as we told him to be easy. Then ares tail started wagging and he started licking Hunters legs. Ares has decided he is Hunters babysitter and protector lol. He follows us where ever we take the baby. If we lay him in the bassinet ares leans his head in and looks at him. If hunter makes a noise ares goes to where he is and licks him. If Hinter hasn't made a noise in a while ares will nudge him with his nose and as soon as the baby makes a noise ares wags his tail and lays down. When I take the baby on the porch ares stands guard or lays next to him. He even chases the flies away from the baby lol. If hunter cries ares licks his feet until he stops crying. Here is a few pics of ares in his new baby role.

well they will be a great pair as they both get older.....so glad it worked out great on that first meeting....be diligent though when Hunter begins moving around as right now the sounds are coming from a stationary object to Ares....but once moving stay alert cause things could turn suddenly.....the voice of doom I know but I always err on the side of safety for everyone.....
