Hello all!  Apollo Baltazar is 8 weeks old today.  He's been here with me for two weeks, and I have been very busy!  He loves the word "eat", he perks up when I say that at meal time.  He still fights me when I try to walk him on a leash we try for about 10- 20 mins a day.  Housebreaking has not been fun, he got into the adult dog food a few days ago and had a upset stomach, so that was not fun to clean up.  I now need to get the word "sit" in his vocabulary.   I'll take any advice on how to train and raise Apollo from seasoned Dobie owners.   He is such a cute sweet baby, and I am so proud to be a Dobie mom, I show him off all the time.  I can't put pics up because last time I tried it didn't work and my entry was deleted.  I'll try to put pictures up again soon.

Here's what I did with Brinks (MiLady learned from him).  Use a small treat, let him smell it so he knows what it is, holding it slightly above his head height wait until you have his attention then move your hand with the treat toward his tail in small increments until his little puppy butt hits the floor.  Say "yes" or whatever marker word you want to use & give him the treat within 2-3 seconds.  Lots of praise & pets too - make it a party!

One of the things you can start to discover now is what his highest rewards are - are they treats? pets? praise? game of tug? a tennis ball?  It won't matter if you use filet mignon, if he's not food motivated it won't work any better than a piece of $1. per pack hotdog.

You might want to search through some of the "Training" threads here.  KevinK, RGreen4 & others have some great training tips on everything from recall (majorly important!) to potty training (also majorly important!).

Welcome to the forum!  We'd love to see some photos of Apollo when you get a chance

Hey welcome to the Gentle Doberman Forum

Apollo is still very very young and in fact, if you've had him for two weeks he's missed out on some important socialization time with his litter mates, and his Mom.

Although training can start any time, remember he's just a baby so don't expect too much from him, especially with potty training.

Can you tell us a little more? You said he got into some adult dog food, does that mean you have other dogs in your home?

Why did you bring him home so soon?

How close is your breeder?

Hope you figure out the photo thingie as we'd love to see pictures of the little guy.

Stay tuned.. I think there will be a lot of folks here with questions, suggestions and lots of welcomes!

Hi and Welcome!  Dabbles gave you some good advice.  There are lots of good threads on training - I've read lots of them and started my share of them with our problems.  Have you ever had a doberman before?  Training is essential to keep control.  Like Kate said, he's really young.  Go slow, don't expect miracles at first, but be patiently consistent.  Hang around and share pics and stories with us!

For uploading pictures, I have found the easiest way for me is to simply upload the photo to Photobucket and then post their image link on the site. Most digital camera photos need to be reduced as the native format is too large.

If you use a jpeg image (file ends in .jpg) every time you save it, it loses some of it's clarity, so I copy it to another folder on my PC. I have a folder for the originals and a folder for the modifieds. I copy the original over to the modified folder and then work with it there so the original is maintained as it always was.

You can reduce it on Photobucket, or you can reduce it before you upload it. To reduce it before uploading, I use the free Paint appliction that is in Windows. In the start menu, click on all programs and then on Accessories. Paint should be in that listing. Once you have the image in paint, you can use the resize option to shrink the size of the image. I usually shoot for 800x600 which gives a good size for viewing.

When you mouse over the image, four lines of code will appear under the photo, as shown below. You want the last line, the one that starts with IMG. You simply click on it and it will tell you it is copied. Then come back to the discussion here and put your cursor where you want the photo and righ click and then click on paste. A small dialog box opens and you have to press "CTRL + V" by holding the control key down while you press V. That copies the image link into the box, and then you click on the OK button.

Most problems stem from an image being too large for the system to handle, which is why I reduce it before I try to post. Plus, it takes fewer resources to store the image, and the upload and link goes faster.

Thank you so much, Dabbles for the advice.  I'm going to buy him some treats today.  My other dogs were very easy to train, and Apollo seems smarter ten them at this age so he should learn fast.  I got him at 6 weeks from a breeder here in my city.  This breeder breeds and trains dogs for our local police department.  He breeds many different kinds of dogs that the police use.  The Dobermans he had came from Yugoslavia. He has dogs from around the world.  He probably didn't know a Dobie should stay with family for longer then 6 weeks, since he sells the other breeds of pups to the P.D. at 6 weeks. Apollo has a litter/pack of his own at my house.  He has 1 older dog brother thats 13 years old,  2 dog sisters that are 8 and 5 years old, and a cat brother thats 4 years old.  He also has visitors everyday in the from of my moms HUGE South African Borble, my friends tiny Maltese, and my neighbors poodles and Chihuahua, so he has alot of socialization.  He tore into the big dog food bag and got diarrhea, I now keep that bag downstairs where he doesn't' go.  Thanks for replying this is very helpful. :)

I have no idea how this slipped past me, but I wanted to say "WELCOME" to the group...even though I'm quite late with it.
