Hi all,

We just heard from the vet the results are in - it's Lymphosarcoma, typical life expectancy after diagnosis is 60 days!!! We are hoping that Ben will prove that wrong, the report will be forwarded to his specialist tonight and she will get it tomorrow and we will have a brainstorm of what to do if anything.....bone marrow transplants are possible but $6,000 a treatment I believe....chemo is an option but I think I am going to immediately start him on this new green algae stuff for animals as it has shown to extend lifespan and reduce tumors quickly.....it can't hurt so I am on the hunt for just the right thing to keep this big ol' boy with us a bit longer.....two years is not enough time to have him in our life.....but thank god he made it to our house where we can love him and make his last year a comfortable one......this too seems to be a genetic disorder as is his pemphigus.....

Thank you all for the prayers please keep them coming he is so special......my husband wanted Ben to see the ocean so I will be looking for pet friendly homes to rent at the beaches in SC and will schedule a trip for the weekend shortly after his staples come out next Tuesday.....just can't believe the news, but I KNEW when he started with the tongue issue that there was a mass down his throat, they couldn't see it during his surgery when they looked down his throat so I suspect it is coming from the outside in - you know we parents know this stuff.....

This is a lesson for anyone wanting to buy a cheap puppy or a puppy without proven bloodlines and health (rescue is NOT a part of this remark always rescue when you can) but without those guarantees your beloved puppy could have genes like Ben and just suffer from tons of stuff....plus this bloodline of rotties seems to be focused in the Florida area and they just keep pumping 'em out to the unsuspecting public. Let Ben teach us all something, it pays to have good genes it prevents our companions from suffering pain and illness and us from early heartache.....there is no reason to be creating puppies with these problems, do not buy from the person who cannot prove the health of their dogs.....be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem....seeing how Ben is suffering physically just breaks my heart and makes me want to hunt down those that bred his parents and smack them.....Ben is so loveable and such a sweet soul but his life should be better than doctor visit after doctor visit .......

Hug your babies while you can, take pictures and love them even when they do wrong......we have too short a time with them....make it a good one for you both

Oh, Tal, I am so so so sorry.  This just breaks my heart.  We are loosing too many of them too young.  I am so glad you're taking Ben to the ocean.  Not everyone would understand that,  I took Tory for one last ride in the convertable the weekend before she died. I wish there was something to ease your pain, your's and Ben's .  Give him hugs and kisses from us.  You are all in my prayers.

thanks guys, it's hard to not look at him and cry but we have to be strong for him and not assume the worst until it is the worst.....but crying is a good outlet right now....he has touched our hearts so quickly in this short time and it has changed my opinion of rottweilers forever, who knows we might want another one down the road, but I am putting it out there that Ben will be here a long time yet, I can't go down the negative thoughts that wouldn't be fair to Ben....

So sorry to hear about Ben. JJ & I will say a prayer for him.

Im so sorry to hear about Ben, I know how much you care about him!

I wanted to share this with you. My Elly whom is now waiting at the bridge was diagnosed with cancer and more than 30 percent of her leg muscle removed. It was a very fast growing tumor that literally within a weekend had developed a huge golf ball tumor on her leg that was not there previously. They did surgery immdiately but still didnt get all the margins. I researched this for quite some time and came up with this diet. This was originally desinged for humans but has had great sucess rate with animals as well. It is called the Budwig diet. Please google/research it and think about trying it. I used this with Elly and she lived another 2 years after, we put her to sleep from something totally different and her cancer had not turned up anywhere else or spread.

Again I just wanted to share what I had researched and tried. It is something that has had great success rate with people as well as animals and it cant hurt to try.

Thinking of you and Ben,

Des

Hey Kim :(

I don't know what you are referring to can you explain?

Des,

THANK YOU!!! I trust your advice and suggestions, I will look into that immediately, I am not just going to go quietly into that goodnight :)) I will fight for Ben as long as Ben wants me too....and changing his diet would be one of the easiest ways to help him rather than throw more meds at him....I will go check on that right now....

Again, thanks everyone for all your thoughts and prayers....

The good news it is not totally changing his diet but adding to it certain ingredients. If I ever have cancer this will be one of the first things I try. I will be praying for both you and Ben.

Des, I just read up on the diet supplement of Budwig and it sounds wonderful!!! and very easy - to be able to do something so easy and help Benie at the same time - THANK YOU!!

I am off to the store tomorrow!!! gotta get cottage cheese, flaxseed oil, and whole flaxseeds, I usually have those ingredients in my pantry but not right now, so out to the store, gotta get started asap......

options!!! I have options!!!

Kim, the Budwig diet pages mentioned the tea you referred to so I have that as well, I will be researching it tonight too!!!

So, so sorry Talisin.  I have no experience with this, and I doubt anything I say would make you even feel a little better. You and Ben will be clouding my thoughts! I've no doubt you have the support of the entire forum.

It's great that you have an array of things to try with him.

All my wishes are reserved for you and Ben!

Essiac is a four herb tea that came from an Ojibwa woman in Canada. (I think. Ack. Not enuf coffee.)  It came within a couple votes of being approved in Canada for a cancer treatment. People in cancer drug trials are not usually allowed to participate if they are taking it.

You can buy it premade (more expensive) in health food stores, or you can make it yourself - it's really easy. You just add the premixed herbs to boiling water and let it steep.

Here's where I buy it from - www.herbalhealer.com There's lots of great info and testimonials about it there, and it's the cheapest I've found it. I have found smaller batches of the dried herbs in health food stores to make it as well, but it's a little more expensive. (But not as much as the premade bottled stuff.)

It's not just for cancer - if you read the testimonials, you'll see it's good for a lot of things.

Sending NRG and good thoughts for Mr. Ben (aka lover boy!) and you and your family as well!

So sorry to hear about Ben's troubles....so heartbroken here for you and him.  I brought Roman home when he was 2 1/2 from a humane society in NC that my daughter was working at.  She called me and said there was this very sweet, loveable Rottie that had been there for a few months and just seemed so sad.  I got in the truck and immediately went to go bring him home.  There is no sweeter dog to me.  I have no idea where he was bred.  He's 10 years old now and he has some very large fatty tumors all over his body.   I have never looked up any of the health issues that Rotties have. I will definitely start paying more attention to all his lumps and bumps.  I was praying that Ben just had the same type of fatty tumors that Roman has.  :-(   When you talk about Ben, he sounds so much like Roman.  They could be brothers, they sound so alike.  Gotta Love a Rottie!

Keeping you and Ben in our prayers....

Hey guys I am so touched by all your outpouring of love and caring for Ben and us; I am sitting here on pins and needles waiting for one of his 3 vets to call and discuss options, I feel very anxious at this point as I feel deep inside that every minute that is not spent DOING SOMEthing for him are minutes wasted that could help him.....I know that is just worry at it's worst but I need to DO something, I can't go to the store for any supplies for him until I have gotten the phone call from his vets, I certainly don't want to miss those calls.....so I am a basket case right now.....thought I would pop in and tell everyone thanks, at least it gives me something to do in the interim of waiting......

Kate give Sofia Ben's love

And tell Roman HI from us as well, if he's anything like Ben he will understand :)) I hope his fatty tumors remain just fatty tumors......

Kim I have the herbs for the tea saved there is a new recipe that has added alot more herbs to it.....but I think I prefer the one with just 4 ingredients

I feel so out of it, knowing it was just Sept. of 2011 that my Goofy died shortly after adopting Ben, I hate to think I will go through that grief again so soon......

Thanks Harley, you might just get that call!!! when I have done all I can do I will need all the help I can get, I am still reeling but I have stuff to do, I am worried though that since Ben's immune system has to be repressed not stimulated that the budwig diet might not work for him as it could stimulate his pemphigus out of control....:(( so I have a call into his holistic vet to get more insight and they are working on it today I should be picking up the green algae late this afternoon when it arrives in their daily shipment I am so hoping that both can be done for him, but the immune thing has me concerned....I keep checking email for any info too.....my vet emails as well as calls...so it's a waiting game now....Ben seems so depressed, he isn't interested in chewing on his bone or anything he just sleeps all the time now.....breaks my heart to see this.....I hope that with the weather turning halfway nice this weekend we might be able to take him for a walk and re-energize him....can't wait till the staples come out and he can move better.....ok just rambling right now, I will go

Hi Tal and Bennie and the whole family,

Indeed we are so sorry our eyes are tears. Big Ben has such a special energy, we hope it will last. Which it will, in our minds and spirits for always. We know a big Rottie "Zanzibar" he is 8, I am sure equally as lovable as your Benjamin, just a big bunny rabbit still.

Its so hard knowing we are all likely to feel the profound sadness of losing our beautiful pets. Its an agreement we make with ourselves that we can.... handle it...  Its a high price to pay for unconditional love, but we animal lovers do it again and again....

Have a wonderful trip to the beach,  like you said "dogs and water my favorite thing" I hope its real nice!

Thinking of you very often:)XXXXXXXXXXXX

Well it's been a pretty good day today, never heard from the specialist but did hear from the holistic vet and got the green algae tonight and he has had his first capsule, it will cause detoxification and that can cause a day or two of the blah's but then it should perk up and feel better; once he has a week down with just one capsule twice a day we bump him to two capsules twice a day for a month and then we reassess him after a month to see if he can have more or less; with his dairy intolerance we will be adding the cottage cheese diet in very very slowly to see how he tolerates it....this vet thinks that Ben's diet of sweet potato may be causing a problem since sweet potatoes have estrogen and that feeds tumors and cancer, I had no idea sweet potatoes had estrogen so do carrots seems that anything with beta carotene has estrogen and ben needs to avoid foods that can feed cancer....we are discussing moving him to a prepared raw diet and then introducing the cottage cheese diet slowly so we have a plan, our normal vet has discussed Ben with the specialist today and called a while ago while we were out picking up the green algae but the message said that they want him off the atopica but I am keeping him on it until sunday so he can adjust slowly with all these changes coming up, I want him adjusted to the green algae before taking away meds he's been on for going om two years, then we get to do the diets - wish us luck we are throwing everything at him that is not a drug........

Been looking at beach front rentals that accept pets and I am finding the breed stigma so it's gonna be tough but I will find a place that will take an aging rottie and chi for a few days or else, hahaha..... the beach is only 4 hours away from me if we go to SC instead of NC kinda weird but SC is a smaller state hahahaaha, but - that means push come to shove we could borrow the company van and go down and sleep in the van for one night :)) I will figure out a way....can't be gone too long since we will be leaving 9 cats with my mom to keep track of and care for and with her health like it is that's asking alot of her, she has to live here and then go home to care for her pets.....

Anyone know any rottie friendly rentals in Myrtle Beach, Folly Beach, Seabrook or Edisto Beach, SC???? Most places accept the little dogs but the big'uns they are not to fond of.....hubby wants to leave pepe with mom, I say NO, he says he will bark all the time - has anyone taken an old little dog that is hard of hearing and poor eyesight to the beach?? if so did they raise a fuss with barking being in a strange place???

We found a couple of places that are SUPER pricey but it's a one time thing so we are willing to splurge.....I do want oceanfront no sense going and not being able to walk Ben right out on the sand, after all he is not up to a block or so of walking on pavement and THEN sand walking.....

I will keep you posted on the beach trip......

Oh, I'm sorry.  Its so hard when they leave us too soon.  You never know, though - science doesn't know everything, and I'd do exactly what you are - try anything and everything that won't hurt him.  Know that you gave him the best time of his life and he gave your soul a boost, too.

I think Atlantic Beach (near Morehead City, NC) is dog-friendly, though a little farther north than you might like.  Its a really pretty beach, too.  Folks don't realize how long NC is - I can get to Jacksonville, FL, as fast as I can to the coast of North Carolina!  Don't know any in SC, though.

Oh yea I totally agree with WNCDobes.  Cancer can be very mysterious.  My Uncle was given 6 months to live 18 years ago.  He's been just loving life ever since.  Also, the beaches at Oak Island, NC also are dog friendly.  We always took Roman there with us when we used to live in NC and there are many very dog friendly (reasonably priced) houses and condo's on the beach to stay at.

Poor Ben.  And poor you!  :(  At least we can all be glad that he has such a wonderful mama to take care of him and make whatever time he has left – be it months or years – as full and happy and drenched in love as possible.

Unfortunately, this heartbreak is inevitable and part of what we sign up for when we welcome an animal into our lives.  But we continue to do it over and over not because we think it won't happen this time, but because the love they give us far outweighs the pain of losing them.  Keep hold of that, and hug him tight.

We used to go to Myrtle Beach every fall, and stayed right on Ocean Blvd with our doberman and a couple of ratties at a very nice place called Compass Cove....but over the past three years, they have changed their dog policy to only accept no more than two dogs, and there is a 30 lb maximum limit , I think.

I sure hope you find exactly what you're looking for.  Seems like it might do you ALL some good to get away to the beach for a little bit.

Thank you Gingersmommy - I will look at that tonight and see if anything over-rides the choice I made today :)

Wnc - I am hoping someone will understand why we want to rent on the beach when I contacted a house tonight (see below pics) I mentioned having a dog with fast growing cancer and that the trip was specifically so he could play at the ocean before he died. Here's hoping the sympathy card will keep them from freaking over a rottweiler.....

DJdad you aren't kidding - to have a few days of nothing but the sound of the ocean and the birds with nothing to do but focus on the dogs will be a blessing.....sooooo looking forward to it....

Agalang - that's what I was thinking too. And I think when we love our dogs as much as we do we instantly know when something isn't right we just have to trust that and keep pushing until someone proves us wrong but most times we are right and this time I would have loved to have been wrong...

Principessa - thanks for those ideas those are great I had not thought of that!

Tanna - We intend on showering both the dogs with lots of love and special things - seems like the chihuahua is suddenly losing his eyesight dramatically daily, he is also very hard of hearing now and he doesn't hear us get up and we will find him staring at the empty chair where we had been sitting, waiting for an invite to get in the chair - it is so sad to see him not be able to see any better than that right now, I don't know that he will even be able to see the ocean but I know he will smell it and hopefully hear some of it.....I am praying that they both won't go to rainbow bridge together :((

Can I share some excitement with you guys???

so today I spent alot of time hunting Oak Island, Seabrook (they have a 20lb dog limit so they are out) and Edisto and after much ado we chose a fancy home on the beach & I mean on the beach, where every room has beautiful ocean views, all the bedrooms, the living room etc. it has a garage, and an Elevator!!! for the old dogs and me on crutches - wonderful!!! and the comment that was left was from someone who had an elderly english bulldog that needed the elevator so I am hoping that they are bully breed friendly. Here are some pics I saved of the place:

The side of the house facing beach    then the chairs you see in the first pic are on the same patio as these chairs and table talk about beach access!!

Looking west from the second floor (1st living space floor)and then Looking east uninterrupted views

The kitchen and then an ocean water view from a nook in the living room

Look at the views from those bedrooms !!!! wake up to that every day are you kidding??? oh yeh....

the darn thing sleeps like 17 people how many of you guys want to go hahahaaha?

I loved this place cause of all the views from inside, the decking, ease of beach access since the dogs would not do well walking long distance and then walking thick sand, this way it's right out the door to packed ocean sand; and the elevator and garage wow!! VERY pricey.....We decided this was Ben's vacation in fact the folder on my computer says "Ben's Vacation" it may be the only trip he will get to make, maybe not, but while he is feeling perky and well we wanted to splurge and do it up big, then if he is still doing ok in a year we can go cheaper and a little less upscale but this time its worth the money....

I think I might take my paints and artist books and do some painting since I have no intention of ever leaving this scene until I have to....it's only available in May so that's a little while away, here's hoping Ben will get better and feel like it by then....and pepe won't be blind.....

I am continuing to look at places but this one is tops tops tops.....just wanted to share my excitement we have not been away together in our 27 year marriage except to go to business meetings or for my surgeries so this will be our first ever relaxation trip since getting married and even then we didn't get a honeymoon!!! in 27 years!!! I am so excited....can you tell.....still trying to figure out if Ben can handle 4 hours in his new car with it loaded with stuff......

Heard from the vet again, this time we are taking Ben off everything except his prednisone and of course the green algae, his staples comes out tuesday that will make him feel better...we are getting info about lymphoma seems that of course Ben has the rare kind and no one really knows what the prognosis is at this point but he could have months or as much as 4 years!!! that would be fantastic...the typical lymphoma can be forced into remission fairly quickly according to the vet but with Ben's odd pemphigus issues it creates a totally different scenario, if he didn't have pemphigus it would be a terrible thing but manageable, right now we are getting a consult with the oncologist to see how we proceed with the pemphigus and the lymphoma together....

Personally right now I am a bit more worried about the chihuahua as he seems to be going downhill rapidly.....I need to find out what is going on with him.....for now Ben is  holding his own, I never know which way to turn when so many are sickly all at once.....

The vacation sounds absolutely amazing; hopefully it will all pan out.  27 years without a relax vacation, I can't imagine!  We managed a nice five-day honeymoon last year, and two weekend excursions since then.

Hopefully you and your vet can find what will work for Ben and he will be around to write sweet love-letters to Sofia for years to come.  ;)

Tanna - We don't go anywhere because of all the animals, we have so many we don't feel it is proper to ask ANYONE to take care of that many animals in one house, therefore, we go nowhere, we might take the dogs for a day ride but we are never away overnight. Way back we did go to a couple of manager meetings for my husband's work and my mom came to live here with our whippet, collie, Wilbur the little black dog, and 8 cats but we are all much older now, hahaha, and the cats number 9 and the dogs will go with us.....but mom is not a spring chicken anymore and 9 cats are alot to care for.......but she said she would cause we never go anywhere.......it's our big blowout trip......I will let you guys know if I get the house and I will definitely take the camera.....

Gingers.... - it will be interesting to see how the dogs react to all that water and porch space.....and especially the elevator hahahaa
