Shelbi is now 20 months old, and doing better than she was 6 months ago.  We have been treating her for Dermodex for several months.  My vet says that it is the strangest case he has ever seen.  Usually this starts on the face and legs, but Shelbi's started on her back.  She in no way looks like any photos that I have seen on the internet.  It is some patchy hair loss on her back.  In fact they tested her for allergies before they did a scraping, because they were certian it was not Dermodex.  My vet says that I have done a tremendous job of treating and prevention of spreading.  She is on her last two rounds of treatment and then we should be done.  She has started to grow new hair in the patchy places and her last scraping revealed only dead mites.  This has kept me busy this summer.

Everything I have read and heard about this is that they contract this going through the birthing canal.  The vet is still calling it juvenile Dermodex because symptoms started at 1 yr.  This is all new to me, but I was going nutty until we finally found out what it was.  If anyone else has had experience with this I would appreciate any thoughts.

I at first was blaming myself, I thought I wasn't keeping her clean enough even though she receives a bath at least once a week, or I wasn't doing something right, you all know this is my first Dobey and I have experienced nothing but bad things for her while attempting to do what was best.  I thought surely this was another bad thing on my part.  I am hoping to hear good things from this post, but I am prepared for whatever comments or knowledge I will receive.

Glad to have time to check in on everyone, and sorry I have not been able to post for so long.  I have had this going on, all the human kids are out of school, and the engine in my mother's car blew up so I have been running her for all her appointments and shopping.

Happy to touch base, hope everyone is well, I will check in again later today.  Everyone please have a blessed day.

LilyBugz had a bad case of demodex and although it took a while to reveal dead mites in the scrapings and for new hair to come back it was well worth it. she is a much happier dog now. it is very frustrating i can relate. Many people would not pet her or let their dogs near her becuase they thught it was contagious so lily did not get socialized as much as i would have liked. you just keep up the good work. :)

Lady Kate - great to hear from you also I have posted new picture of an 88 lb Shelbi.  I got in trouble with the vet and she had to lose 7 lbs.  I also included some pictures of what the Demodex looks like after 6 months of treatment.  I love my Shelbi she is my buddy.  I truly feel sorry for any evildoer that would attempt to harm me.  She is very special to our entire family, but she is my baby.  She follows me everywhere, I take her with me in public when I get an opportunity.  I would also feel sorry for anyone that would try to cause her harm, I would come unleashed(hehehe).

bbroyles - also great to hear from you.  Business did not do well I signed off the end of May and one of the partners has carried on with it.  I believe that he is keeping a float but that is it.  I am looking for work and have an interview with our local county office for an accountign position on the 18th at 2:00.  Wish me luck.  By the way what beatiful Dobey you have ended up with there.  From tiny tiny to that absolutely beautiful.

Thanks to everyone for the welcome backs.  The human kids start school on the 17th (YEAH) then I will be able to keep in touch more.

Jerial, You are doing an amazing job with your Sweet Shelbi... The weight loss looks good and soon she'll be as sleek as a seal.

Spink_n_lilybugs, please view the photos I have posted of what her back looks like today and give me your thoughts as you have dealt with this before.  I would like your opinion on her recovery.

Please also if anyone else has dealt with this condition please let me know your thoughts.

LadyKate I would just like to thank you for your always positive attitude and your caring for me and my baby even though we have never met.

I would also like to thank everyone else for their cares and concerns, and as always the great advice.  I am not a breeder, I am not a trainer, and I am not a person that shows dogs.  We were looking for a family dog and a protector, and I believe that we made the best choice possible.  She may not have perfect confirmation, and she may not be show quality, but she is my baby and she could not be more loved.  I do the absolute best I can to care for her, and she is as much a priority to me as my children.

I know that some have disapproved because she probably did not come from a reputable breeder, however, both the sire and the dam were fixed after the pups were born and had homes.  She is with us and her sister is fixed and is still with the dam.  There will be no more pups as a result of this breeding, and we have one of the best things that has ever happened to our family.  I hope that this will account for something with those that disapproved in the beginning.

Every dog needs a home and every home needs a dog. ( I read taht somewhere and love it)

They are incredible blessings and I don't know what we'd do without their love, devotion and commitment to us.

I think all of you won the lottery when you won Shelbi!

NOBODY should disapprove, and if they do,shame on them.I know exactly how you feel when you say she is one of the best things that ever happened to your family.I feel the same exact way about every dog I've ever had the privilege of caring for. From my first shephard mix rescue 22 years ago to my current boy, Brody.People who call their animals "Just dogs"are the ones I disapprove of.
