Thank you Kate and everyone for those kind words on the other thread!!!

Update on the little guy - his meds are working!!!! He is bearing weight and is almost back to normal which to him is still two kneecaps out of socket but still walking....he is a lot more anxious and snappy and a bit needy, his breathing is pretty labored and his heart murmur can be felt while holding him....I think the stress of ER got to him too

He is whining ALOT when he is left in his crate for down time and rest....he whimpers and fusses.....but he's ok for the most part

Tomorrow will be a bit of a challenge as I have to do a bit of housework each day to tend to the other critters here and keeping him comfy without stressing him into jumping and barking and possibly hurting himself will try me but I will come up with something.

OMG - a note to everyone - I learned something the hard way this weekend with him - he had meds for pain that they said would make him a bit sleepy note the word sleepy - he got his meds put him in his crate for his nap as usual wrapped in his blankie; danny checked on him and said he was moving around but looked like he was just turning over so we took time to eat lunch (45 minutes) I went in to get water and thought maybe I would check on him but he seemed quiet but something said go anyway - OMG OMG - I saw his breathing was so distressed I lifted his blanket and he was unconscious!!!!! he was open mouth breathing and I lifted him up and he was limp  - he was having a heatstroke!!!!! the meds had him so knocked out that he couldn't get the strength to come out from under his blanket to get cooled down and was about to die.....he had to have been within minutes of death......

I was totally scared to death, but stayed calm, I held him while my husband ran back n forth with cool washcloths to place on his belly I kept doing this until he finally came around, his breathing eased and his eyes opened but he stayed limp for about 15 minutes, I was ready to race off to ER again.....but he showed signs of recovery and within about 2 hours was ok.

I was terrified afteward - I had no idea that those meds would cause the same issue that babies have of not being able to roll over and then they suffocate.....the label said sleepy not incapacitated!!!!!

Let this be a lesson to everyone even the best of mom's or dad's can have a freak accident like this one - always be alert and never wrap up your dog while on meds OMG I feel horrid, I just feel horrible what kind of mom was I to not know this....it rips my heart out to think I almost killed him!!!!!

So thankful he is alive and doing ok

PS. Pepe is my first little dog so I am not used to "covering" up a little dog with a blanket to burrow this little dog loves to burrow into his blanket - I will always be a big dog person but dang this was scary

Oh My gosh.. thank you so much for this post Tal.. of course the first thing we all want to do is swaddle.. we grew up on swaddling and I think it's imbedded in our genes..especially with the big kids.. I will always check their ears .. if they're chilly.. they get swaddled..

Hope things go well tomorrow.. will be checking this thread..

smooches to the pooches..

Thanks guys :))

I sure wanted to alert everyone to this heatstroke thing - of course in hindsight it makes perfect sense but there is a difference between meds that make you a bit sleepy and others that knock you totally out, this med knocked him out and then to think he had no strength to move a blanket that is small and weighs nothing compared to him......that was a wake up call.....medicated dogs do not need to be covered cause they can smother to death......he was totally unconscious and limp I thought I had lost him, sad part is had we not found him we would have thought he passed due to stress from the injury who would have known???

Heatstroke is not just hot weather and cars or outdoor events but blankets and hot houses as well

He is doing much better today!!!! he can go up n down the steps ok and seems to be back to his daily routine yayayayay but now he has to go out to pee every 2 1/2 hours not sure what that's about but hey he's alive and basically well

so glad he is up and around again .the pee thing could just be side effects from the meds ,but like you said that is small potatos he is back to his fun self .
