Hello!

After researching 3 very different breeds we decided to get a puppy last night! Meet Dolly, our Bernese Mountain Dog. Taking in all the information I could I feel she is the best fit for our famliy at this time. I will have my dobe.....just a little later! With our home situation, young kids, chickens, other dogs, a berner (with a lot less energy) will fit out lifestyle as a family very well. If I was making the decision for myself, I would have a dobe. But I can wait for that. I can't ignore all the information I've learned in the past 3 months and just get what "I" want I'm still going to do obedience/agility/rally with our local club, and my small daughters will be able to actively participate in her training.

I'd like to stick around though....I still love seeing and reading about dobes!

I agree AWWWWW, they are some of the cutest puppies, I always wanted one but decided to go with the collies since that was my first love. What a cutie.....And by all means hang around I have been here for two years now - hard to believe - and I don't have a dobie yet either, just this big ol' rottie who is an honorary doberman here, after all you've shown us baby pictures of her - now you have to stay so we can see her growing up and the things she will be getting into. Have you considered training her to cart??? I am slowly working Ben up to that - it sounds fun and rewarding and useful by hauling wagons of supplies and eventually me, I know the Burnese is quite capable of carting - just wondering......

adorable!  congrats to your and your family!   and of course, stick around here....it's not a requirement to HAVE a Doberman, just to love to the breed :)

I'm sure you know that she will be a BIG dog. I am sure she will do fine with you, just remember that at this point she is a baby and it will be some months before you can expect a lot from the training.

Thank you all!  I'm glad I can stick around and that I'm not the only doberless member....I wanted a big dog with protection qualities and family oriented.  I think I have one   I do love dobes and someday will have one.  Guess for now it's puppy time though!  My daughters are having so much fun with her.  And she already gets so wiggly when she sees them get up or come home from school.

I had not thought about teaching her to pull a cart.  Many people have asked me since we got her.  I'll have to study up.  The berner forum that I belong to is not very active......but I like to look through the old posts.

I'll be updating her pictures along the way.  I do still LOVE looking at all the dobes though.  I have to get my fix somewhere......

She is adorable! I thought about A Bernese (because I had a friend that had one) But my heart was still set on a dobie! And Alexis will be 10 weeks old monday and she is unreal how much she has already learned! I dont know that much about Bermese -- She just looks so cuddely compared to the tazmanian devil that I have ! LOL!! Until she is tuckered out and then she is the sweetest angel! Puppy kisses galore!! Congrats!!! rENA

Sonlight - I referred to this forum as my dober fix too, hahahaha

And I would definitely find an active carting group to get info from, I know the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has to wait until it's bones set at about 3 to 3 1/2 years before it can begin carting you might want to check with your vet about when Bernese bones set for carting you don't want to do any damage to those growth plates; you can learn alot by snooping in the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog sites and "carting your dog" I have lots of sites saved for if and when Ben is up to it. There are videos on youtube too showing collies, bernese, Greater Swiss, dobermans!, shepherds - any dog can cart even a chihuahua just smaller carts hhahahaha it looked fun and a great way to work the mind and body and be useful to their human in the process.

It requires a special harness which I have a link to if you ever need it. :))

Congrats on your cute baby!!!!

Thank you Tal....I think it might be a while.  I'm sure those bones would be ready for a couple of years.  Snooping ahead of time is always a good idea

Jim....my girl is very smart so far.  She is 8 weeks today.  And vocal!  She goes potty on command, knows "leave it" very well and is a love bug.  Those puppy teeth though   She has slept through the night the last 3 nights (we've only had her for 3 nights)  without getting up and only cries about 5-10 minutes before settling in for the night.  I'm very happy about that!  She also loves to sleep on my feet in the evenings (when she is not in my lap).  Has to be everywhere I am.  I can see how they are a breed that loves to be near their people just like dobes!  You have the advantage in the grooming department, but I don't have to worry about tail and ears
