We were visiting my fiance's parents this past weekend, and brought Ginger. His parents originally tried to talk us out of getting a dobe, but they've fallen in love with "the German girl" as they call her.

While we were visiting, his mother informed me that we were lucky that Ginger's snouth was a moderate length and that we didnt get a longer snouted dobe because when they have the longer snouts there isnt enough room for thier brains in the skull and they can be very dumb and prone to going mad, like afghans and greyhounds.....

The look on my face must have been priceless...but considering they are in-laws I just sat there and replied with a cool "you dont say...."

LOL  I've heard that their brains outgrow their skulls, but didn't know it had anything to do with the length of their nose.  Good think Ziva doesnt look like an Afghan or Greyhound, then.  Guess I'm safe.

I always forget that some people just don't follow the same wavelength!

I might have burst out laughing at that one.  I think everyone should be forced to do more than just basic boring biology in school.  If skull size dictated whether or not a creature was "mad".... what would we think about those weasely types?

Haha.. oh man!

There are so many fun little myths and things like that people still believe....I think they are funny.  I love to hear people say that...I just smile.

Dang...I knew Dakota was a little on the crazy side but had no idea her snout was to blame!

lmao gotta love the inlaws eh!?

I always thought the shorter the snout the crazier...after all you must be a little nuts to go around chasing parked cars!  :p  jk

Lol, I have heard that one many times.  On a well bred dobe, the snout is actually the same lenght as the top of the head.  So, if they have a bigger snout, it means they have an overall bigger head, that's why the snout is longer lol

The list of breeds whose brains grow too big for their skull is very lengthy - Dobies, GSDs, Rotties, etc, etc.

Never heard the one about snouts before. Now Red had a long (and large snout) but then he also has a huge head. Princess on the other hand had a smaller and shorter snout and smaller head. Hmmm.

More power to you for not telling them they were full of it.  I tend to let myself get worked up when people claim to know more about your dog than you do.  I do deal with this alot because of the breeds that I like to share my life with.  My father told me the same thing about there brains growing to big for their skulls, and that they go mad and start to turn on their owners.  I told him that dogs will turn on their owners if they are treated the way he tended to treat his animals no matter what the breed, and to let me worry about it for myself.  ugh... gets me fired up just thinkin about it.  Then I adopted a APBT and he made a comment about them being flesh eating monsters, and then stopped right there in his tracks by the look that was given to him by my wife.  Slowly turned and walked away never saying another thing about our dogs again.

OMG, is that what is wrong with my collie?  hahahahahaha..... hey at least he has an excuse now instead of wondering why his brain misfires I will tell the vet next time it is the length of his snout, now I must admit - with that said - I haven't seen a collie as "out there" as this one I have.  When we go for a ride he sits in the back seat of course but he sits with his back to the front of the car and looks out the back glass and barks at the cars behind us - DUH; Not sure what he thinks he is doing but it is so funny I can't even tell him to hush, and I am sure that people driving by us think I am a horrible dog mom and unable to control my dog. Which for him is true he really is more than one brick shy of a load, but god love him we adore him. If it weren't for these weird things about him he would just be any ole dog, but this makes him Goofy - next one is Einstein!!!!

My neighbor was telling Lil Mama that it was ok for her to be a little loopy "After all Dobermans don't have much brains anyway".  This coming from a lady who cannot keep her Shitzu from running away from her on the street.  I ignored her and later told Lil Mama that there people out there in this world who are clueless and not to worry her cute little self over this.

Be sure and tell your in-laws that Ginger's eye boogers indicate that her brain is leaking out of her eyes so not building up to an explosion in her head.

But just in case you might want to line the roof of your vehicle with foil for the ride to the vet with the exploding brain.
