Hi...I am new to this site! Seems to be a lot of great info on here, which is great being I am a "new" dobe owner! My dobe's name is Sophia and she is 9 weeks 3 days old. I have had her for 2 weeks now. Today I had her ears cropped. So far she is doing pretty good. The vet told me to give her benadryl for any itching and a calcium pill for her. I was kinda surprised I could see her stitches when I picked her up. I figured I would not be able to see her stitches, but they said to leave it like that and not to put anything on it for the next 10 days. And NOT to get it wet! My biggest problem is she is "sprinkling" everywhere!!! So, I bought a baby gate so she can stay in the kitchen. The vet said it is because the anestasia has not completely worn off. Has anyone else had this "side effect"??? I feel so bad leaving her in the kitchen...but like I said she is sprinkling everywhere,,,just 2 drops at a time, but constantly :) and it is hard being I am potty training her! He scent is now all over...lol

Hope it doesn't sound like I am complaing...Cause those are not my intentions! Just hoping all turns out great!!!

Oh, and the other reason I have her in the kitchen is because I also have a min pin, so they cannot come into contact...they love to rough play :)

Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Jenny

I guess it could be because of the anesthesia but at the same time, urinary tract infections are not uncommon in Doberman female puppies and if there is very little urine often, that's what I'd be thinking.

Hi Glengate,

That same thought crossed my mind, but it started as soon I got home. I guess I will wait until tomorrow and if it is still happening I will take her to the vet! Thanks for the input!!!

Thank you!!! It is a great name...lol...!!!! I really hope so as well! I just feel so bad that I cannot play with her as much right now!!!  Hopefully tomorrow is a better day.

Jennymattie, Welcome Aboard !

Pretty little girl ya got there . Is it your first dobe ? Your gonna like this site , I know I have enjoyed my short time here . Lots of good and comforting info . Not to mention a good story every now and then ( LK ).

Don't over worry about the ears . Jewel's 2nd day after her crop , she was darting around the yard and flew under the azalea bush and caught a branch with the piece of tape that crosses over the tips of her ears and RIP , out comes the post . She survived , I on the other hand , almost didn't make it . Oh , another routine you'll master before too long , REPOSTING .

Your gonna love raising that little bundle of joy . All the fun stuff they think up to keep you on your toes . And think they do ! Just keep plenty , and I mean PLLLLEEEENNNTTTY , chew toys around .

Good luck with the sprinkles , just wanted to say hi ,

HI !

Hi Gun Slinger :)

Thank you very much!!! I have found out so much info in such a short time!!! No way like finding out through real expierences!!! Yes, Sophie is my first Dobe!! She is so adorable!!!

I do feel so bad for her right now...I am so worried about her ears! She was scratching them last night and one started bleeding!!! I had to yell at her..."NO" and she looks at me with her puppy eyes and I feel so bad...she is looking at me...like well I did not ask for this mommy!!!!

The sprinkling has slowed down a bit...but she is still having accidents! No good! She was doing so well with her potty training...but the rain has not helped! And she does NOT, I repeat, does not like the rain! She cries and cries...but eventually she will go! lol I am hoping today will be better, or I am taking her to the vet tomorrow! Make sure she does not have a UTI!

And I love buying her toys...her new favorite is the kong sqiggley!!! She just loves it! She also loves mommies hands and feet! I am trying to stop the play biting...any suggestions??? It is starting to hurt...lol lol

Thanks!!! And it is a pleasure to meet all of you!

Welcome to the site!  lots of great people and info here.  don't stress too much over the ears, they are dogs and you cannot completely stop them from shaking their heads and running into things.  Most times it doesn't really hurt them at all and the ears will stand just fine.

I'd def keep an eye on the random peeing though,  that shouldn't happen and could indicate a problem if it continues.

Play biting is something they ALL go through - a sharp NO and give her a toy to chew instead works good.  A tap on the snout along with a NO if she really doesn't want to listen and I found a squirt bottle does wonders too.  Up until almost 6-7 months when you pet Rocky he would try to chew your hand and have to be constantly told, so don't think you'll cure that in a few days..haha.  They do learn and grow out of that but you'll find at about 3-4 months when she is teething it will get worse...EVERYING goes in that mouth for the first few months

Hi!  Glad you're here and you just keep checking in, lots of knowledgeable Doberman owners and you'll always receive helpful info with those concerns you'll have from time to time.  Be firm with her and let her know whose the boss, love her dearly and for heaven's sakes where you get those cute little booties?  Love the photos :)

Thanks...I got them at Petsmart...she does not care for them too much though! You should see her run in them...lol

I figured I would dress her up while I can! She has even had a "pawdicure" and had her nails painted pink...my children loved it! I tried to post a pic up that...but would not let me :(

Is there any good sites for Dobe clothes? At least for winter coats and sweaters? And life vests??

It gets really cold here, and I do not want her to be freezing! And we have a boat so I would love to see how that goes! I have read that dobes do well in the water?? Any stories or advice on that? Looks like I will have to wait until next summer...

I've included a few of my favorite links for winter coats for the dogs. Someday I'm going to get that zebra print one. LOVE IT!

As for the water most Dobes do not do well at swimming at all. For the most part they sink. I have one girl that loves the water but I keep a life jacket on her. Her son and grandmother both hate the water. I found THE CUTEST life jacket this past summer at Petco it was pink. I didn't buy it at the time because I already had one for my swimmer... I decided my girl could not live without a pink life jacket and went back later that week to purchase it and it was gone. That is my goal for next year is finding the pink life jacket for Paris. She can hardly wait until next summer comes around.

Nuts.. was not able to open the links.. I will Google the sights and see if there's a royal purple jacket for Her ladyship! thanks

wow I wonder why the links didn't work. Wish I was better on the computor to figure it out. I just copied and pasted from the website. The one site horse creations has lots of color choices to make. They are fatastic the other site I want the zebra jacket so darn bad. Maybe it could go on my wish list for Christmas.

rnd, you managed somehow to copy some space characters into the link. Our website usually cuts these off, but you copied in the special characters for a space, which our website doesn't cut off.  Be sure that when you highlight a web address that there isn't any space highlighted after. I fixed the links above. They work now.

thanks alpha! NOt sure how I did that but will maybe preview before I post next time to catch it before.

Purple? Of course. That really is her color isn't it. Not only is it the Royal color, she does look good in it.

Have you found a crown for her yet?

Jennymattei -

In the one photo with her paws stretched forward (with the booties) and her head between them, she looks as if she's thinking, If I have to, with my teeth, I can out of these things in five seconds. I hope she didn't hear me laughing, it would hurt her feelings.

She is a cutey pie, and will no doubt grow up into a beautiful girl.

About swimming - please get her a life jacket if you are going swimming with her. Dobermans are about the worst swimming dog because of their body structure. They are by breeding, trim and narrow but deep chested. The lack of a lot of body fat means they don't float very well, and the slim chest just makes things worse.

Many runners have they same problem - if they swim, they have to power their way through the water for if they stop they sink like a rock.
