Ears still not standing on their own at almost 2 years old

Hi,

I have a red doberman named Osso and he will be 2 September 19th.  His ears were cropped (show crop) when he was 8 weeks old by the breeder and we've posted them up until he was almost a year. The tips of the ears still needed some help standing so the breeder recommended we use breathrite strips to help strenghten the tips and said we didn't need to do a full post anymore...that as long as the breathrite strips held the tips up we could use those from now on.  So we've been using breathrite strips along with tape to give them more support for a year now and the ears still aren't standing on their own when we take everything out...they fold over like the right ear in the below pics.  Does anyone have any advice as to what we can do to make them stand on their own or are they going to be what they are by now?  Should we have kept doing the full posting for longer? It's just so frustrating because his ears have been so much work and we've done everthing how we were supposed to and they still aren't cooperating :(

I hate to say it, but yes, you should have kept posting the full ears.  Breathe Right strips are used when just the tips are slightly wobbly, when the ears are almost completely standing but just need a tiny bit of help.  These ears need more help than that.

You could try posting appropriately again, but you've waited a long time so it's getting pretty doubtful that you'll have success now.  Worth a try, though.

You may want to add some glucosamine to his diet to help with the ears while you're posting.

I have one boy that I posted one ear on until he was 18ish months old and it worked out, but I posted continually.

Thank you so much for the info...we'll start doing full posts again and add the glucosamine to his diet and see what happens...fingers crossed it's not too late!

My boys is 8 months old and his ears are done. I still post him and will do so till he's a year old because I don't want him smushing them in his sleep and losing  progress. He also has the long show his ears were done at six months. I use a 1/2 inches backer rod so the tips can really grip on there I learned this tip by a Doberman owner who shows and it worked out great id keep trying and let them out of post for more then an hour. If worse come worse you could I think get them re cropped but I'm no expert on that.

I agree with Glengate - It is worth a try, but at almost 2 years of age, it may be time to see if you can find a vet that can try corrective surgery (if having standing ears is that important to you). Otherwise, love him as he is.

Whatever happened with this ? I heard scarification was a method used to firm the tips up. I also was just googling one day and saw ear implants anyone know much about them ? I hope this other poster fills us in

Unfortuntaly, this may also be a result of a bad ear crop and it is nothing that you really could have done! It is worth shot though to keep trying a little more and when you wrap the ears, make sure you fold the ear around whatever post you use so that you cant see the post anymore.
