Good Morning Forum Family~~

Upon listening to the odd and interesting sounds that emit from La Diva, I was wondering if anyone else has vocal Dobes?

She has this gutteral snort when it's time to go for a run.. There's this long ragged sigh when she has to wait for said run. After patroling the yard and scouting out 'prey' she will huff like a Rhino and throw herself down in the most unlady like manner.

Rarely does she bark.. but when she does, it means it's something important and needs attention.

Sometimes when she seems to be having a bad dream, she gives short little distressed whines and blows air out her closed mouth ( I don't like that one.. and always soothe her in her sleep)

So I'm wondering if y'all can add to the list of DoberSounds... Chris.. I know Reesie can sing.. what elses does he 'say'?

Well Cisco does all the things that La Diva does but for different things. My favorite (NOT) is his high pitched whiny little girl bark when he is not getting what he wants....

Raven is my quiet little angel- She only barks when necessary, never huff, puffs or sighs. She does do the little whines in her sleep every once in a while...

I have GOT to get a video with sound of Ziva when she's in the truck and we pull up in the driveway coming home from an outing and she see's the evil neighborhood CAT slinking out of our yard. OMG---I can't even describe the werid noises and shriekings that come out of her.  Will try my best to capture that alien sound she makes and if I do, will definitely post it here.  It's unreal.

You're right Kate!!  They are so vocal!  Reesie does sing - he sings differently depending on what the kids are playing.  While my son was playing a Bach violin peace that was peppy, he came running into the room and pranced and howled as loud as he could.  Then if someone is playing a more mournful peace, he gives a little low "owowwwowww" almost like he's crying.  It crakes us up.  It's different for the harmonica too.  I've got to get that on video and post it.  He "talks" to me when he's feeling fiesty, as I'm sure many of ours do - the ol' Ahhhhhowwwrrrrahhhhrrrowwwwlllll.  And maybe a little bark at the end to punctuate it.

Oh Reesie loves to bark.  a bird: growl, Bark!  a deer: growl, Bark! a box on the sidewalk:  double growl, Bark!  He absolutely hates it when I put him on the zip line and go inside.  He plants his rear down facing the kitchen window and does the most pitiful high pitch whine/bark/howl combo I have ever hear.

I love the huff, don't you Katie!  I'd love to see the Sofia doing the long sigh - that is so like a Diva!!  The snort, I would really like hear.  But a Diva's got demands, you know.

What a fun thread!

My guys don't have many sounds yet.

Lance is fairly quiet.  He has a nice deep bark when someone has the nerve to walk past our house or is in a neighbors' yard without asking him first.

Lola on the other hand is VERY vocal.  We've been trying to get them to understand that they can be in the same room with each other and they don't have to play.  This is a very foreign concept to them.  When they don't listen they get some "quiet time," which Lola fills with the full on Snoopy with the nose in the air and the HOWWWWWLLLLL.  Or it's more like Aawwee-ooooo!

Lola also has a very high pitched "whine," but it is more of an "eeeeeeee" I cannot get that sound out of my head.  It is so very annoying, but she is so cute I have to love it.  Dang!

My favorite sound is when Lance wakes up in the morning and yawns with this really cute AHHWOO!  He is so sweet at that time.

Cisco and Raven do the AhhhWoooo yawn. I love that too! Ciscos is followed by a very dramatic stretching routine which ends with a complete stretch up the game room door and another yawn and ahhhwooo! Gotta be loose as a goose for all the shenanigans of the day I guess!

I like the stretching routine.  Lance stretches low and long and Lola high and tall.  :-)  My friend who is in fly ball said to teach them that stretch as a command so they will be limber before playing.  I have plenty to teach right now, but sounds good in theory.  I want to get them in fly ball or agility.  They need to burn off energy.

Hahahha! either that Mandy, or he's into Yoga.

Sofia will make a funny AhhhWooo sound when she yawns, but only when she wants our attention. Her 'submissive yawn' is quiet.

Chris, please repost Reesie's arias.. I'd love to see the different ones too..he is so talented..

Paul... the DoberShriek.. I've never heard it.. you've GOT to tape it and post it here..pullleeese

LnL.. I think that's amazing that Lola is the shrill one and Lance is quiet.. I wonder if he'll pick up her singing ability..

Do any of you remember Q Tip our nurse from NZ..? Her Dobe would humm.. never heard it but Sofia has a bit of a hum that turns into a full on moan ( and very.. ummmmm shall we say descriptive moan) when I rub her ears or her eyes in the morning. .. it's a little un settling... one time Mike came down the stairs and said

" What's going on down here??"

MiLady is fairly quiet on her own, but when Brinks gets her started...  They both do the huffing & puffing & "I'll blow your house down" noises, but the latest is howling!  Brinks howled a bit when he was a baby, but I hadn't heard it again until this spring.

My subdivision is in a small valley & at the top of the hill (at the entrance) is a fire-house.  Located at that fire-house is a tornado warning siren.  When it goes off, Lady starts & then Brinks joins in.  Lady's howl is the exact same tone as the siren!  They blend so that I can't tell which is siren & which is Lady.  Brinks' is a bit off, but getting closer each time.

The other thing they do is "discuss" between them.  This is usually after a hard game of chase, or fetch, or whatever.  They lay on the floor and will discuss who has ownership of the tennis ball...  No barks, whines, growls, etc, - kinda hard to explain!  I'll try to get a video of it next time.

Yes my two discuss all the time! Haha Definately need audio links! About the only time raven makes a peep. She will bark at birds and cats etc outside, but only briefly...otherwise she is quiet as a churchmouse...

LOl I love it..

Bella is my sweet and quiet baby unless there is a need for attention or she wants inside.. When someone is around that should not be all her hair raises up with a menacing growl followed by a deep husky bark that I truly dont understand comming from inside her.  She does however huff quite regularly. She will sit in front of me with her mouth closed an blow her cheeks out, followed by a huff and fall down.. "Im so pitiful pay attention to me"..

Then there is ever vocal Mopar.. He sighs, he wines, he barks, he growls and is currently beginning to howl along with the sirens from the ambulance that goes by all the time (etirement center about 2 blocks away).  When he wants to he will get out "I love you" or "I wannnn it" but only after he has exhasted the ever annoying whine of pllleeeassseeeee.. . I have a video of teh wining on youtube so I will look it up.. Gotta get some more of his antics..  His most recent is nosing the leash and door handle followed by sneaking up behind me and putting his head on my arm at the computer desk, then watch out because the whining commences.. When he wants a walk, he will not let you get away with going without him anywhere...

Sky does the Ahhwhooo yawn as well. Soooo cute in my opinion.. She also growls and yips more of a meeer afff (its not really a full bark yet) while playing with the big dogs..  She will whine to go outside or if she is being lazy and doesnt want to put her back feet up on the couch all by herself.. She does have the cutest little bark that really sounds like a bark when she chases my son out in the yard and cant catch him..

Of course when they all three are in the back yard and one goes to high alert its very menacing.. Every Wednesday a lawn crew mows and trimms teh front of the neighbor hood (which our long driveway lead to the area).  This week they had a new guy who apparently wanted to know what type of dogs were in our backyard and he got about 5 feet past the property line before Bella noticed him , I was standing in the sliding doors off teh deck.  Well Bella took notice and was not pleased, she went ballistic growling and barking, Mopar jumped up beside her and joined in with his deep tone then poor lil sky was sitting between them yipping.. Was the funniest thing to see that man hoofing it back to the truck like his pants were on fire.. Once he was in the truck and gone our lil Gang went right back to playing.. Wish I would have had the camera in hand for that one. . I guess the other guys didnt warn him because they were all laughing as well. .

Ella is a girl of few words. She doesn't huff, puff, bark, growl, ect. very often.

She only barks when someone pulls into my driveway. Except my best friend Justin, she knows the sound of his truck. She give one high pitched excited bark and then starts her wiggly walk to the gate. He's here just about every other day tinkering on his truck, or helping me with the yard work, and just keeping an eye on things since I'm here alone. Or if I have her toy and won't get it back, I get one quick "Woof"

She stands by me and makes a low, deep growl (But not showing teeth, more like a "Mom, they're coming." growl) until I tell her it's ok if someone gets out the car at my house. When I tell her it's ok and give her a pat on the head she stops and greets them friendly. She started that on her own a few weeks ago.

And she only whines when it storms. Poor baby is scared.

Other than that, she doesn't talk much. Completely different than Angel was. She would back at the wind.

Steve is a drama queen - er, king.  He is the funniest dog I've ever owned with the noises and tantrums he throws.

He lowers his head and whuffs at you or Stella when he wants attention.  He throws himself down (literally, I can hear him crash against the side of his kennel) when he is frustrated he's in bed and GROAN.  "CRASH-GRROOOOOAAANNNNN".  He grunts when you're playing tug with him.  He sighs all dramatically when he's tied down for being a maniac in the house.

And then the tantrum howls/barks/whines when he is not wanting to be away from me or Eli.

He also will close his eyes tight and lay perfectly still when I'm doing anything to him he doesn't want.  If his eyes are closed - nothing will hurt him...

OOOHHH the silly sounds! XD Zelda's usually quiet unless she's feeling a little rebellious or protective or maybe a little frazzled and DEFINITELY when she wants something.

Like whenever she hears something outside of the living room (we have a sliding door that leads to a large guest room that leads outside and she barks a warning bark and huffs small little ones when she realizes that there isn't much of a threat. When she wants something, I'm sure the rest of you have heard it, the Dobercry of Pity. She barks in this high-pitched voice and stares at me with big amber eyes and her ears back with this body language that DEFINITELY says she wants something, whether it be a food treat, some lovin', or just to go out to the bathroom. When she's frazzled or teased by my brother and dad she barks.

When she groans, I rarely hear it. She usually groans when she rolls rolls around on the floor or rubs her back in the grass. It's probably a lot like Sofia's obscene moans if I've ever heard her notorious moan XD

Marti.. The picture you posted of Thing 1 and Thing 2 says it all. I can actually HEAR the "ARRGG ARGGG" They remind me of twins who have their own language.

Jess, what IS it about the 'CRASH Groan..' Sofia does it too..

same way when I dremmel her nails.. Eyes get shut tight. I bet Steve is saying "If I can't see you, you can't see me."

LnL.. Good for Bella.. she definitely had to let that guy know he needs to be introduced before poking his head into 'her' yard!

Ooooo.... funny noises are Skye's specialty.

When someone leaves the room and closes the door... she gives off this high-pitch whine that you cane hear from the end of the driveway. She does the yip/butt wiggle when mom pulls into the driveway after work. When someone walks past the house, she gives a really quiet little bark. When someone walks towards the house, it's a little louder, then when someone knocks on the door, it's a full fledge big-girl bark. After I open the door to see who's there, she starts with the happy yip/wiggle. When she's hungry or wants her walk, she starts this groan that NEVER STOPS... she just keeps on goin till she gets what she wants. The "Moan" happens when she gets her ears or tummy scritched. During her mani/pedi's, she cries like someone is killing her, same with baths and when she is told not to play with the kitty.

Oh my gosh, I'm dying laughing over here!!  The descriptions are great, Dakota makes all these sounds and a couple more!  My favourite is this little squeal she lets out whenever we're playing fetch.  You have to work her up to it though, pretend to throw the ball a couple times, tease her with it a little...then when it finally flies she shrieks and flies off after it.  Soooo funny!

We have the CRASH groan as well...ZD you MUST get a video of the Z queen!  Once I was stuck in traffic because of construction and there was a guy on a speed bike behind us, all decked out in black with a solid black helmet.  Dakota must have thought he was a zombie alien...the yelpy growls and huffs coming out of her were priceless!

So being vocal is a dobie thing then?  Just add it to the list of traits that define who they are...and I wouldn't have it any other way :)

Sounds of Laith

Bored, wants attention: soft growl, grunt under breath.

Talk to him and ask question: Sigh

Gets off floor/couch: huge stretch, (poots (yes gross)) and then a loud yawn

If he wants something:snapping of the jaws

Inside bark is: snapping of jaws

Isn't it neat they rarely bark. Do you guys have a separate bark from inside than out?

Funny story- Laith has begun to WHIN again. Yes, for so long he stopped that annoying whimper. It has started again. All the time! Well this morning at, 5 am! It started. I ignored him for awhile. Then it started to become a howl. I took him out and he peed over a minute. And where you ask? ON THE SIDEWALK. Two people walked by and I just got to giggling. Poor guy!!!!

Geez Louise.. these are just so great!! Just heard a new one from Sofia. It was:

"There's a kitty across the street and I'm a trained and licensed killer.. I want it!!"  " NOW!!"

I pulled over to a Farmer's Market yesterday and had Miss Priss-Never Makes a Peep" locked in the car with the windows cracked just enough to let the air in and her face out... There was a cat.. sauntering across the street ( you how they saunter? tail doing a bob bob bob,.. eyes straight ahead.. " come get me big girl.. I know you're locked in the car." look??)

The 'big girl' went totally ballistic. The roar she emitted shook the windows of the car, as she was threw herself against them .. She'd leap from the back into the front,  nose pasted on the windshield, she was almost frothing... then bound into the back and proceed to pound the back window with her feet. OMG she wanted that cat...

She drew a crowd that 's for sure.. and it was right after I finished explaining that she was indeed 'Perra Buena" "No tiengo miedo"

even I was a little "miedo.". Have never seen or heard her so fierce..

The cat finished his journey across the street and I swear I could see him smile as he disappeared under a fence..

Kate, that is exactly the Alien behavior I see from Ziva when she sees the neighborhood cat in HER yard.  I am still trying to capture that on a video, and I actually had the camera with me Saturday when she started doing that song and dance, but by the time I got it out of the console, turned on and up to my eye, she had jumped across into the front seat and smashed it into my face with her body, shrieking the entire time...so I missed it, but will keep at it.  (sigh)

Still trying to determine Gauge's noises.  Right now, I can tell you he has the following:

"Big boy" bark:  the I don't know who just pulled into the driveway but I'm not up for visitors or the I'm in my crate, but you don't know that and this is MY house so GO AWAY!   Sounds like continuous, deep throated barking, sometimes accentuated with growling if appropriate.

"Are you KIDDING me?" bark:  the Seriously, you guys?  I mean, REALLY?  You're leaving me right now?  I can't even believe you're putting me in this crate.  I'd be SO GOOD if you just let me roam the house!  Sounds like big boy bark, but higher volume so as to really grab your attention and non stop. Often sounds like tiny gnomes have come out of nowhere and are poking him with sticks for fun.  No growling.  see also:  "You're not fooling anyone" bark.

"You're not fooling anyone" bark:  the Know what?  I SEE you. You're right there.  Open your eyes and roll over.  It's light outside. I did my part.  I need to be out of here right now.  GUYS! I can TOTALLY HEAR YOU TALKING ABOUT ME!  Unlock the cage!  or the Mom.  I'm sorry I chewed up your sandal.  Really.  But walking down the stairs and making it sound like you're gone didn't work. I totally heard you open the fridge a few minutes ago.  Come let me out!  Sounds like short "wwwoof...wwwoof...wwwoof..."; sometimes accentuated with whining.

Whining:  the i'm really sick and tired of not getting my way, you're apparently immune to barking so I'm going to make your ears bleed with my throat whistle sound.  Also most known to illicit the response "GAUGE - STOP!  NO WHINE!"

and finally, we have:

"Fine. You win for now" growl:  the Fine. I'll lay down.  I'll go to sleep.  You win. I'm defeated.  I understand now that I'm done with my bone, my rope, my toys and I can't keep my quest up to find out where in the world those "kitties" you speak of are. Just know that you're getting up at 5:45 or whatever time it's no longer dark in my cage. Always accompanied by 3 turns in a circle and a heavy sigh when he's finally given up.

Gideon was funny last night. He and my wife were on the couch, both stretched out - Gideon snoozing and my wife grading papers. As he began to encroach more and more, my wife moved him back to his end of the couch. Gideon lay there, head up, and began this looong whine. He did that a couple of times, then he started mouthing his tail with this AAYAAYAAYAAYAAYAA sound that had us all staring at him wondering what in the world he was doing. He was restless from that point on and began messing with stuff he knew he shouldn't. He was put off by the fact he had Ben moved back to the end of the couch I guess.

Loki has the aaawhoo yawn as well along with the full stretching, he then slings/swaggers down the stairs at full speed to go potty. It is the cutest thing! He also does a whine kind of half bark when he wants attention, he only barks when he is not getting his way.

He is so funny and would be the greatest if we can just end the nibbling/biting. He has of late been ramming into me with his toy to play then will nip me if I refuse.

I love this topic!!! Dobermans seem to be, among several other things, incredibly vocal! I think the funniest noise my boy has made was when I actually locked him out of the bathroom. I just needed my privacy for once. After pawing at the door, I saw his shadow pace from beneath the crack under the door, and then he very audibly HUFFED as if annoyed and he couldn't believe I wouldn't let him in.

Then his shadow stayed right outside the door and when I opened it, yep he was there sitting on his rump waiting for me.

They're such funny dogs.

Haha! Chico makes these sounds, too. My favorite two have to be the very loud yawn and the other hands down is the way he grunts/groans when I hug him, squeeze him, kiss him or love on him. He just sounds so happy and content when he does that. As though he wouldn't want to be anywhere else but in my arms. Sigh...it's so good to be loved :o)

The sound I could do without is his bossy high pitched bark. Like when he wants to be let in IMMEDIATELY after I let him outside if it's cold out (which it hasn't been very cold at all this year here in Georigia) or when I put him in his crate when we are leaving the house for a moment. This makes me cringe beause I'm so worried about upsetting my neighbors.

He has a playful type of bark and he already has his "business" bark. I couldn't help but beam with pride when he was barking and growling at the guys digging a hole in my front yard the other day. He seems to instinctively know who is OK and who isn't. Maybe he vibes off of me?

Hi... I figured that "being vocal" is part of being a Dobe. I happen to be a big Star Wars fan, and Brady must be too! He does a great "Chewbacca" imitation when he is trying to talk to me. It is when he is desperately wanting to be part of the humans interacting, and it sounds like he is imitating the tones of conversation in a big animal voice!

He sneezes when he is nervous, whines when he isn't getting the attention he wants yet will stop on command (thank God). If he still wines a little, it means he is over tired and needs to take a nap in his crate. Then he comes back refreshed and no more whining!

He has a crazy, huge bark that clears out people and animals for about a 1 block radius if we are out at Santana Row, a restaurant and shopping area that is outdoors, near our house. Last time it happened a little dog had come up behind him and sniffed him, he spun around and barked and it looked like a fire alarm had gone off the way the people took off!

I want to teach him to growl on command, but he doesn't growl much in general.

Ben my 120lb. rottweiler was in petsmart sniffing out a new chew bone and saw a poodle girl standard size, pretty with the little ribbons in her ears, pink at that of course, she was going through the training class at petsmart and she was put into a sit at the end of the isle we were on and suddenly Ben ran towards her (he is very dog friendly or was at the time) and he ran right up to her and barked IN her face and it scared her so badly that she actually fell over on her side in the floor like she fell over dead, we were horrified. It really was like one of those tricks where you point your finger and go "bang" and the dog falls over, oh my lord it was so ridiculously funny but we couldn't laugh we had to deal with it but now it is funny to the bone.....

I haven't had my dobie mix for very long but he's the most vocal dog I've ever owned! He yawns very loud and makes a huff before he throws himself on the floor, almost like he's aggravated because he can't get comfortable, he makes all kinds of strange, high pitched whines and short barks when he sees other dogs and it seems he almost tries to have a conversation with my boyfriend's dog, who is very quiet, when she's not playing with him.

My Doberman is my first and we have alot to learn. I can say that my Zeena is 10 months old and she has more vocal sounds than i would have expected. First is the deep window rattling growl when she is alert to something not right outside. Then there is the super high pitched bark, this one is a real killer on the ears and she knows it.. she does this one when she wants to play.. she will stand in front of you and whine bark till you redirect or give in. The last one is kind of weird she will kind of snap in a huffy kind of way when she is trying to tell us something and we don't understand.its more like huffing in a temper tantrum kind of way..  she will also do a howl kind of thing as she runs around our other dog trying to get her to play.

We are a first time dobe family too.  Our boy is 15 mos and has a ridiculously large vocabulary of sounds and combinations of sounds.  Some days, I fully expect him to break out with sentences!  We love it.

Dax is my first Dobe and I love the noises he makes. He grunts and groans a lot and he is a noisy sleeper too.  lol.  Can't wait to see how much more vocal he gets as he grows up. : )

Lol Ares sounds like a goose when he wants to play he starts honking then hops around. Another start noise he does is a funny gurgle when he's getting fussy about me not going fast enough on the dinner process lol he grunts and groans in his sleep hahaha I never would have guest these doggies were so talkative :) I've also heard him snore a few times.

Oh my gosh,.. just look at the date on this first post.. can't believe someone found it after all this time.

Reading through is a little bittersweet.. Some of the Dobermans are not with us anymore. That breaks my heart.

So many of us are still in touch through Face Book on a daily basis.. we've made dear and lasting friendships over the years... for that I feel blessed..

There are new additions... that's great.. and you know what? They still chat and talk and moan and hum. They still grunt and howl and Bella even yodels.. ( although she's not a Doberman.. and we really and truly don't know exactly what she is other than 'ours' ) she has more personality and is beyond a doubt the happiest creature on the face of the Earth. She will try to talk to us with lovely yodely ( it's  a word) sounds.

Welcome again new members and let's keep this thread going,..

Our female (the black and tan) is very vocal. She sighs, moans and even talks. Our male hasn't learned yet
