Hi all ! My pup will be 5 mos old this month. I am wondering when is the best age to get her fixed- I have read conflicting  opinions about this. Some say to wait till after the first heat then spay , some say get it done before that...  I almost would rather go ahead an get it done soon but if it's better to let her go into heat once please give me a reason why. Thank you for all the great info on this site! :)

Here's a vid with some info to consider

That didn't work...

This one does,,,

Very informative indeed! That said I have almost always had my pets spayed or neutered because I believed it's the right thing to do. I wish the vets in the us did alternative sterilization options. If I do choose to have my dog spayed it's better to do it after puberty, is that right?

If I knew then what I know now, I would have waited to have my female spayed until she matured. I do believe that having her spayed at six months had something to do with her exploding her CCL.

You'll have to look at your situation and decide if you can responsibly have a bitch in season while EVERY dog for miles around try to mate her. And they will show up over night and camp out for a shot. If there's the least little glitch in your security system, they will exploit it.

All I can say Kelly250 is do your research, weigh the pros and cons and decide what would be better for you and your dog.

Thanks for the advice. I do want to have her spayed eventually but for her health wait until she matures- like maybe 1-2 years? I am a responsible pet owner but at the same time my yard is large but not fenced in and. It could only take one of my kids letting her out at the wrong time and I know even as diligent as I am accidents are possible....  Every time she goes outside one of us is with  her or she is on leash but still...
