What to feed my doberman

I got my doberman from a rescue back in May.  He was eating Taste Of The Wild Bison which my vet doesn't want him on.

My vet wants him on prescription Royal Canin.  I don't want him on this because I am not hearing the best about this food.

What do you think of Merrick or Orijen?  Or what do you suggest?

He gets walked 5 to 8 miles a day and will be doing a lot of hiking soon.  Also, once I get him trained off leash to run, I will also let him get in some running in the mountains.

Why does your vet want him on prescription food? Is his skin and coat healthy, good weight, firm stool? How old is he? If they're just trying to push prescription food, then that's suspicious.

This is an excellent article where a group of folks did a very thorough look at most of the dog food out there and whittled everything down to the  best of the best (based on ingredients, recalls, consumer reviews, etc.). This article is a smidge better than Dog Food Advisor, IMO, because it takes into account things outside of just the straight ingredients list but that is also a good online resource.

We use Annamaet Salcha based on this article, Fitzmars recommendation, and trial and error with a few other foods.

Finding a food is a very daunting task but this list gives you a very good look at the best of the best!

Thank you for taking the time to respond to me!  Our Curtis is a rescue so we don't know his full history...

For the past 6 months that we have had him, he has had firm stool, then loose bowels, then firm, then soft...

He is at a good weight, semi shiny coat but would like it to be shinier, no skin issues, but his stool is soft and we have him on metronidazole to rule out giardia even though the tests came back negative.

The doctor wants him on Royal Canin but I hear a lot of negatives with this food.

I am hearing a lot of good reviews with Orijen.

I will read up on the website you recommended.  Thank you so much!

Do you get your food from Chewy.com? If you set up an autoship, you can usually save a few bucks and it gets delivered right to your front door. Very convenient and their customer service is outstanding! Free shipping over $50 (which should be easy with Orijen). Good luck!

Hi and welcome to the GD forum!

 Anyphotos of your doggie?

There is a webite called dogfoodadvisor.com that rates almost all dog foods.

We feed Taste of the wild Pacific stream. Bellas coat and stools are perfect. Often Salmon makes the fur much nicer. We have written about Bellas diet in several posts, use search.

I also would question staying on drugs for a condition that does not exist, and being pushed a food by your vet.

Thank you so much!  I am about to post photos of Curtis.  I did research on dog food advisor and a few other places.  Decided to go with Orijel 7 fishes for a shiny coat!

What a handomse red boy :) You should be able to tell a difference in his skin and coat pretty quick. I try to stay with the grain free stuff, too. Keep us updated!
