hello, wondering if anyone has any experience with potential third eyelid problems?  our girl's inner eyelid is quite pronounced and covering much of her eye much of the time.  there doesn't appear to be any irritation or redness...just a lot of 3rd eyelid.  we took her to the vet for a general once over once we got her, he pronounced her healthy as a horse overall and gave us some eyedrops for her eyes to see if that alleviated whatever the issue is.  he said he was unconcerned with it overall.

i guess the question is, is this normal? has anyone else seen anything similar in their pups?

thanks!

Is it both eyes or just one?  If it is just one, I'd take her back to the vet asap.

How long has she been on the drops, and what are they?  Did the vet stain the cornea to look for abrasions?

Happydance beat me to the questions.. more details, a picture, might be nice.  If you're worried about it, it doesn't hurt to call your vet for a follow up visit either.

Brinks' left eye's third eyelid is usually prominent.  I've never seen it go up as far as the pupil.  We had it checked by our vet.  (She did a throrogh [sp?] check-over - said dobes sometimes have eye problems & because his eyes are so deep-set she wanted to catch any problems early.) He hated the dye, but was a trooper through the whole thing. She found nothing wrong, but gave us an ointment to use as necessary.  She said because it was prominent, his eye would get irritated much quicker than normal & we keep a close watch on it.

Actually, after we put the ointment in, we massage around his eyes - he will just about fall asleep standing up...  Even if he's been a rambunctious pest just 2 minutes before!

I agree with everyone - if the vet didn't do a complete work-up you need to go get one done.

Good luck!  Keep us updated please.

Sometimes dobermans have eye problems as per your vet, please enlighten us.  Deep set, did your vet mention entropian?

I just worry about foreign bodies in the eye, found so many of them working at the vet hospital, too numerous to count.

That or I was thinking maybe they meant cherry eye, Happydance, but its hard to visualize things sometimes through text.  :)

HappyDance & Jes -  Yes, she mentioned entropian but just briefly as not really common but can happen with dobes.  She concentrated mostly on checking his cornea for abrasions, "dry eye", and allergies.

He doesn't have a "cherry eye" as I understand them - bright red, puffy & distended.

When I look at MiLady's eyes, unless I look closely I don't see the third eyelid.  Brinks' lid on his left eye extends 2-3mm from the inner corner, his right maybe 1-2mm.  I'll try to get a photo, but getting him to hold still with the camera that close...  not gonna be easy!

This was 16-18 months ago so my memory might be a bit blurry.  We were on our way home from a romp in an area where there is alot of wood mulch & the vet's office was on the way home (she's open for 5 hours on Sunday) so I didn't have anything to take notes with like I do for appointments.  I do remember her saying that "dry eye" was fairly common in dobes, but I would want confirmation for that from RnD, RGreen, Alpha, - someone who has a longer history than I.

I really hope ReamsFam checks in soon.  I would like to know how their girl is doing...

I cannot tell if her Ladyship (the Right and Regal Resident DoberDiva) has "dry eye" or not..I do know that when I rub her face, especially her eyes, she moans to the point of..

...well let's just say.. she likes it a  lot.

Sometimes after a run, they look a little red.
