Hello all - long time lurker, first time poster :). We have an 11 wk old female fawn dobe Maya (aka Maya Mayham, Mee-Oh-Maya or just plain Princess Piddle Pants). We got her from a breeder and believe her tail was docked too short. This isn't an issue of aesthetics, our girl has little to no wag. She is a happy, typical puppy terrorist with tons of personality - my concern is her communication with other dogs if this condition does end up being a perminant one due to nerve damage. The vet says we won't know unless it changes; not a huge help, but I get it. Thankfully no other issues (ie poo issues/scar tissue). There have been a few times I think I see a little wagging, but it's hard to tell. Anyone with experience in this area? Many thanks in advance for your input.  ~ Denise (aka Maya's Mom)

Dogs communicate in far more ways than tail wagging. I've got docked dogs and natural tailed dogs. If anything, I think the erect, up-held (long) tail of a dog sets other dogs off quite a lot.

Focus on socialising her and, as long as her tail doesn't cause her any health issues, I wouldn't worry too much.

Tails typically are docked at the 2nd joint, and is done by the breeder (or their vet) when the dog is just a few days old.  I've had dobermans over the years with tails docked at various lengths...one female I got as a rescue many years ago literally had no tail at all, hers was docked at the beginning of her tail bone.  It didnt stop her from wagging her entire body when she was happy, though.  :)

Tails are not the only communication dogs have with other dogs.  They communicate with their eyes, ears, and general body language as well as tails.

You are so right .. the socialization has been great with other dogs and she does wag her whole body :)  Our other dobe was docked at his second joint (we lost Storm a few years ago) and her short short dock is new one to me. Thanks to you both for responding.
