Hello everyone,

We recently had an addition to our family, little Doberman - Dante. He seems to be a very active and happy boy, but one thing we noticed is that he is having some issues with his coat on his face area (the photograph attached below). The breeder told us that this is just a "Puppy Stuff" and will go away in a few weeks. We haven't picked him up from the breeder yet since he is only 7 weeks old. We are planning on getting him on September 21st. However, in a very short period of time spent together, we became very attached to him.

We are definitely planning on taking him to the vet as soon as we pick him up, but in the meantime we would like to know if we should worry about it. Could you please advice what steps should we take?

Thank you very much for your time!

awww what a cutie.....I have read here about skin issues in the little ones like pimples etc. do you have pics of the areas?? that would help.....most likely it is the puppy stuff but it needs to be treated so good idea to get to the vet and get treatment going early.

Keep us posted

Talisin, Thank you very much.

Apologies, I didn't explain what exactly I meant under coat problems. He is having a hair loss on his face area (small little patches of hair). Unfortunately, I don't have a better picture of it since he is still at the breeder. This picture is what I could find on their webpage - Dante is playing with his aunt Savannah. It is a little hard to notice since he is so tiny.

Also, I tried to look it up what could possibly cause it, but couldn't find anything with puppy of such a young age. If there are any professionals around here, please help me to understand the problem or risks.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

My girl had a few small bald patches when she came to me, they were caused by her 10 siblings playing a bit rough! Cant really see them but could this be the cause? My girl was one of the smallest of 11 and they do play quite rough hehe. They all cleared up once she was with us.

Talisin, thank you very much! We are picking him up on September 21st and our vet appointment is on Sept 22nd. Will keep you posted with the outcome.

Ho Konkie, yes, this is exactly what the breeder said. It's probably from playing rough with other dogs. He is on the larger side out of all 8 puppies, but he loves to play with bigger dogs (his aunts). Hopefully this is the problem and it will clear out after we pick him up.

Thank you very much for all your feedback. It makes me feel a little more relaxed now. I was scared that it might be a serious issue.

Ah it probably is that then :) My girl had little 'holes' in her fur on her head where the scabs had come off but the fur hadn't grown back yet, took a couple of weeks but she has a full head of hair now!

Konkie, Leica is so adorable!!! I just went through her album.

Did you use anything in order for hair to come back? Any oils? I was doing my research on how to improve his coat and found some articles about giving him a coconut oil

Aww thank you, yes I think so but I am biased hehe.

I didn't give her anything in particular to get rid of the spots but I do give her coconut oil anyway and her coat has a lovely shine (IMO), here's an article I read about it which includes dosage per weight, do be careful when you first give it as it can give them the runs, introduce slowly, and make sure it's organic, virgin un-refined coconut oil. I have found Costco to be the best value here to buy it :)

Konkie,

Thank you very much for sharing. This is exactly the article I've read previously. Yes, absolutely only organic un-refined oil. Hopefully he will like the taste of it. :)

I doubt this is it, but just in case here was my experience. Juneau had small spots of hair loss under his left eye, on his ear, and under one of his front legs when I got him. Some of it was from playing but the vet also said that it can be pretty common for puppies to have the beginning of mange depending on their immune system because the mite often lives around the teats of the mother dog. They did scrapings and found one. It was not contagious and healed up in the first month without any ointments/medicated baths/medications. I also give him coconut oil as previously mentioned.

Congratulations, he's a cutie!

I would pretty much expect the breeder to have a vet look at that before you take him home - it could be mange or something else, but it does not look like normal "puppy stuff" to me.  JMHO

Thank you, Sgourle and Fitzmar.

I asked the breeder to look into that, but she was very sure that it's just a "Puppy Stuff". Regardless, we are picking him up next weekend and we already have scheduled appointment with the vet.

Fitzmar, thank you for mentioning mange, it might actually be the problem. After some reading, it matches the way his coat looks. Hopefully, it's not though. In any case it's easy treatable and won't make our Dante too uncomfortable.

The vet appointment is today at 4:30 PM, will let you know as soon as we find out.

We picked him up yesterday, and he is already such a good boy. He was so good in the car, played a little bit, then took a nap then played again. When we got home, we took him to the park and he had so much fun there running around with the tennis ball. Napped with us after all the activities and slept all night in his crate like a grown up boy! We can't believe what a smart boy he is, we've had no accidents at home at all, he only went to the bathroom outside at the park.

Here are some pictures!

jskm... He is adorable and hope you had a good visit with the vet.. and also hope your vet reminded you to keep him away from public places until all his shots are completed.. Parks can have all kinds of nasties that can do severe damage to a pup without inoculations..

Dante is such a cutie.. we all look forward to watching him grow..

Hello everyone! Thank you very much! It's our 3rd day together and we are enjoying every moment!

We went to see vet yesterday and Dante is a 100% healthy puppy :) We've had his second round of puppy shots done, so he can play with other dogs and visit day care few times a week to socialize and stay friendly. His little spots on his nose are just from scratches while playing with his brothers and sisters and they already seem to start going away. We will start him on 1 fish oil pill a day and a little bit of coconut oil to keep it improving.

We have our hands full at the moment, but as soon as we get used to our new lifestyle we will share more pictures of our little baby, Dante!
